oh god
replace tarantula with Mayonnaise, definitely
I was concerned for a moment
thinking you found room for Tarantula but NOT Mayonaise
forgot all about mayonaise
:|
haha
I know Tarantula isn't anywhere near one of the best songs they've done but I've got a soft spot for it, if only for the ridiculous amounts of mini solos he does. It's a banging tune.
Might also replace Siva with XYU, too many choices
I know what you mean
I feel the same way about the pop heaven of 'Thats The Way (My Love Is)' & Tarantula... in fact I like both those songs
in no particular order

Believe (yes, the Iha song)
If there is a god (piano version)
This actually changes on a monthly basis but that should be par for the course with the amount of material they have, and having been into them since 1991 it's hard to think of them as just a band anymore. I'm loving the bootlegs of the new stuff on archive.org, Pinwheels and Pale Horse are quietly becoming firm favourites.
I really really like 33 but can't bump any of the list above for it. Gah!
SD<MCIS<MachinaII<Adore<Pisces<Gish<Zeitgeist=Machina1
loving... new... stuff?
I don't understand, they split up in 2000? And Billy Corgan withdrew from public life shortly after?
<shakes head sadly>
think about Zwan
think about it and cry
Actually like the Zwan album
*braces for torrent of abuse*
Zwan album >> Zeitgeist >>>>>> Corgan's solo album
^ well this is of course true
but that's like saying
Zwan >> television series King of Queens >>>>>>>>> Robert Mugabe.
But
What Zwan didn't release<<<<What Zwan DID release. The tossers.
YES I like some of the new stuff. That's even more controversial than even listening voluntarily to the solo album these days. Iha even has a new solo album out in May/June and I shall buy it, purely to wind up mr guntrip.
why would you buying a James Iha solo album wind me up?
(an aside; I've never really liked his songs w/r/t the Pumpkins but maybe that's because he never had enough to be a big part of their sound. I've never heard his first solo album but I imagine a whole album of him doing some nice mellow-ish songs would be pretty good, like)
I really enjoy this album too
However, it should go Jimmy Chamberlin solo album>>Zwan>>Zeitgeist>>>>>>Billy Corgan solo album
Have you not heard Freak?
makes my top ten (even though I'm almost at the point of giving up trying to make a top ten).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJHbJfv_PUQ
I used
to love 'Believe'. I bought the Iha album as a result - jeez was that a mistake.
Believe is great
And so is Blew Away. Iha had the skills, definitely.
Hummer
1979
Thirty Three
Mayonaise
Thru the eyes of Ruby
Cherub Rock
Today
Tonight Tonight
Luna
Bullet With Butterfly Wings
this is an impossible question
i would honestly say that i think that i think they have about 100 songs that i think are really really good.
i may answer this later however....
I haven't listened to Smashing Pumpkins in a god damn age
Reading this thread really makes me want to rectify that.
space boyyyy I misss youuuu

Chereb Rock
Muzzle

P.S. For all those who doubt Starla
Listen again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnFeCex032g
It's as good as something off Siamese Dream

Every else from Siamese Dream (starting with Cherub Rock, Hummer, Mayonaise, Silverfuck and Soma)
Everything else from Gish (starting with Siva and I Am One)
Followed by choice tracks from the other albums, etc. (Perfect, Ava Adore, Zero, Everlasting Gaze, Tarantula, Eye)

4. 1979
5. To Forgive
6. Bullet With Butterfly Wings
7. Rhinoceros

Porcelaina
Stumbeline
The last song
Shame corgan is such a terrible person now
Now?
Hasn't he always been a bit of a control freak bellpiece? I still love him and his music though.
yeah, I always had a high tolerance for him
kinda like big epic rock stars to be pretentious and a bit ridiculous, always thought he was basically alright but last year when he fell out with the effect pedal maker devi ever he revealed himself to have a pretty appalling attitude to transgender people (even if his problem was just with her the language he used was pretty unacceptable, and the way he targetted the one thing he assumed she would be most insecure about), its like finding out a song writer you really like is a massive racist or something, they always seemed to have that 90's outsider image and it is disappointing he turned out like that
Holy crap
I missed this story, so I just googled it. It's a shame that someone who, like you say, cultivated such an 'outsider' image during his heyday would use such nasty language against someone else who is a bit 'different'. But not surprising.
Billy has always maintained that stance
but the evidence is all there that he's quite a jock, he's a huge fan of sports, has invested in setting up a new wrestling- sorry, 'rassling' league, there was rumours of basketball scholarships when he was younger, his metal leanings (e.g. championing of Pantera) and psychological bullying he dished out to his bandmates to get his own way.
There's always been aspects of his personal demeanour that have outright pissed me off (think thing get very dubious with his behind the scenes interference before kurt cobain's suicide) so much that when he was publicly threatening devi ever I honestly wasn't surprised to see that side of him, more so that he let his guard slip.
I'm sure if I was in a successful band (heavy hearted lolz) then there'd be enough muck about my life to rake up and disappoint avid fans, I try not to let it get in the way of the music.
I find it heartbreaking to divorce artists from their art but it's probably necessary.
Just look at Larkin.
*Pokes head above parapet*
I don't mind Corgan's solo album :S Also, I don't really care for the earlier stuff, hence...
Adore > Mellon Collie > Machina II > Machina > Siamese Dreams > Gish
01. Zero
02. The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete
03. 1979
04. To Sheila
05. Stand Inside Your Love
06. Perfect
07. Everlasting Gaze
08. Real Love
09. Age Of Innocence
10. Fuck You (An Ode To No One)
I realise this list is pretty screwy/wrong. Pleased to see love on here for 'To Sheila', but surprised no one else mentioned 'Dusty and Pistol Pete'.
i'm surprised you have Gish, their best record, ranked dead last
Yeah, I noticed that as well.
1. 1979
2. Cherub Rock
3. Landslide
4. Siva
5. Geek USA
6. Drown
7. Silverfuck
8. Hummer
9. I Am One

2-Mayonaise
3-Drown
4.Bullet
5-Rocket
6-Stand inside your love
7-Perfect

From someone who loves Siamese Dream, MCIS and Adore
Today
Tonight Tonight
Rhinocerous
Pug
Cherub Rock
Geek USA
Zero
Thru the Eyes of Ruby
Bodies
Starla
Most listened to song recently has been 'Never let me down again.' And unrelated, I think Corgan's voice is brilliant on the quieter/more dreamy numbers (particularly on Adore).
Agreed about his voice on the quieter numbers
I really thought his solo album would be an extension from Adore, but no, it was just fucking godawful
His solo album was just his ego masturbating over a CD
no real order
Hummer
Geek USA
Rocket
Soma
Mayonaise
Cherub Rock
Quiet
Rhinoceros
Muzzle
wacky curveball entry - Stumbleine
you can probably tell I love SD much more than all their other stuff.
Stumbleine is a great tune
nothing wacky about that as a choice, a great solo performance by raving mad Bill
No order
To Sheila
Today
Tonight, Tonight
Thirty-Three
Bodies
In the Arms of Sleep
Daphne Descends
Stand Inside Your Love
By Starlight
Galapogos
This really is too difficult
And they have some really different sounding songs which make any list dependent on your mood. I guess I'd include:
Bodies
Landslide (yes Corgan's croaking cover off of Pisces Iscariot)
The End Is The Beginning
1979
Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans
Daphne Descends
Behold! The Night Mare
Mayonnaise
I Am One
Beautiful
with a lot of head-scratching with not being able to include Disarm, Bullet or Geek USA
I've decided to do this again, using the Rotten Apples principle
of leaving everything from Siamese Dream out*, because if you include it in the mix, all you'll end up doing is just packaging SD as Disc 1 in a 3 disc release.
*yes, I know RA includes Today, but I'm going the whole hog here.
So, excluding anything from Siamese Dream:
Rhinoceros
1979
Appels + Oranjes
Freak
Landslide
Siva
Bury Me
Drown
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Everlasting Gaze
spaceboy
disarm
luna
sweet sweet

my favourite ever band
I didn't think they were till this thread and now I kind of think they are.
Very difficult to narrow it down to 10
Geek USA
Siva
Suffer
Cherub Rock
Hummer
Where Boys Fear to Tread
XYU
Starla
Age of Innocence
Hello Kitty Kat
this thread prompted me to listen to Pisces Iscariot for the first time in almost 15 years
can't believe I managed to forget how good it is.
Despite really liking it when it came out, I think as the time since I last played it got longer, the more skeptical of my original assessment I became, figuring that as a collection of b-sides it really couldn't have been as good as I remembered.
But listening to it again, I'm sorry I left it so long. Always loved the Landslide cover, and remembered Whir as being nice, but I can't believe I forgot how immense Pissant and Hello Kitty Kat and Starla — especially Starla — are.
Hummer
Mayonaise
Today
Here's To The Atom Bomb
Stand Inside Your Love
1979
Starla
Rhinoceros
Here Is No Why
Daphne Descends
I think...can't decide
Clearly it must be...
... Disarm
