EL-P: CANCER FOR CURE
Just completed my first spin of this record. I've had no real time to digest it yet but it's initially very impressive. Consistent, abrasive, full of jet black humour and head-snap beats. Could be a classic.
Anyone else heard it yet?
not yet
so so excited though.
i didn't like the first two LPs
but I love The Full Retard. Maybe I will listen.
.
It's great. Love the track with Killer Mike and Despot.
how long is it?
the only thing I don't like about anything El-P involved is that he rarely edits himself.
It's twelve tracks
Most of which are around three to four minutes with a couple of exceptions
thats a good sign.
Is this streaming anywhere yet?
ADORING this:

.
I don't think so, but it has leaked so shouldn't be too hard to find.
Don't like* downloading stuff so I'll wait
</highandmightytone>
* know how to
Album is fantastic
Definitely one of my favorites of the year.
The record he produced for Killer Mike is really great as well.
Feel really bad for downloading this
But fucking hell is it good.
not that bad then eh? ;)
I'm probably going to get mouth-fucked by Nazis unconscious
:(
WHAT!!!!!
Missed that el-p had a new album comming out is there anymore star trek samples floating about on any of the tracks......
I download almost everything
But I can't do it with this one. Skewed ethics perhaps, but it'd feel like nicking money out of my mum's purse: I wouldn't enjoy the sweets in the end anyway.
Oh man
I'm enjoying this a lot.
3 tracks in
yeah...this is the best album of the year
sounding really really good
appearing
at atp....
ya dancer!
Finally crumbled
Is it just me or is there more than a faint whiff of Skrillex's undies in here?
This album is really good...
thought this was out today
apparently next week
CRUEL BRAIN :(
I'm slightly dissappointed
Only cos you expect EL-P records to come out of the box as fully formed monsters ready to engulf you into their warped parallel universe.
This ain't that. He's definitely not run out of ideas, filtering all kinds of industrial, dub step, grime etc. influences through his usual lo-fi high intensity sound, but I really doubt I'll still be combing through this album in 5 years time.
The music's pretty great, but it's not as much as a statement as I've come to demand from him. High expectations are a bitch.
P.S. Any EL-P fan should definitely check out the Killer Mike record he produced as it's streaming now. Loving this...

I'm over it the whole *statement* thing
It's nice that he let a *little* bit of light in. It's another great album, I imagine it will win him a lot of new fans who found his previous albums overly dense too.
Killer Mike and El-P have been talking up the prospect of a full on dual-rapping collabo album. On the strength of Tougher Colder Killer & Butane, this would be fucking amazing.
Yeah.

"Turns out the BBC has at least one well-eared critic taking my tax money!" :')
I enjoyed that.
Can they send me the money direct, though? I'd really appreciate it.
I want to write for the BBC and be all proper
I really like your review, you write a bit like me.
just listening to it for the first time
two thoughts
one: fucking hell
two: the bit where Drones over BKLYN drops in
Listened to this a few times now
it's on spotify too for those who can't wait.
It's incredible.
Is it?
Premium?
oh, didn't know there was a difference in content
but yeah i can find it on my premium. I already had it downloaded though before I found it.
I have
Premium and only The Full Retard is available, on my iPhone at least. You sure it's not picking it up from your local files?
The new Killer Mike is definitely on there
Listen to that in the meantime.
oh shit
yeah you are right.... i'm still a bit of a noob with spotify
I'm one of those fullas
who cool folk with big caps take the piss out of for putting a 'token rap album' in their end-of-year-lists, but fuck 'em, this album is fantastic. Inventive and fucking alive
Performance on Letterman = Fucking Awesome

aesop rock's
new single is 'ace' too. Skelethon and this are going to rawk.
I haven't really listened to much other than Labor Days
But he sounds fairly different here. Almost like Cadence Weapon.
It's a great track though
Zero Dark Thirty that is.
IF YOU KILL HIM I WON'T TELL
i always laugh when
"I JUST KILLED YOUR SON" bit comes on
Such a great album
Probably my favourite hip-hop since Madvillainy. As someone mentioned above, I can't wait for Skelethon either. Oh, and the new Killer Mike album is the shiznit too. Should be a great year for hip-hop.
This album
fuck starts my burp hole.
cancelled ATP and Primavera :(

Oh FFS
Obviously this is well beyond their control, and my thoughts go out to El...
BUT ALL THE STUFF I REALLY WANT TO SEE AT THIS FESTIVAL KEEPS CANCELLING
^this...
I've been listening ALL day getting so excited to see him. Damn. Hope I get chance to soon.
I know the festival is going to be great
but I'm having to try hard not to let these drop outs put a bit of a downer on it all.
GBV, Bjork, Ultramagnetic MCs, Death Grips, and El-P were absolute must sees for me, and given how many bands you realistically see at a festival... that's quite a big chunk of it.
Can we have a free bar one night to make up for all the let downs?
Same to GBV and El-P
they were absolutely top of my list of people to get massively excited for :(
We at least deserve a free pizza cone
dont like it
I'm not mad keen yet either
The Full Retard is very good though
I think it's definitely decent and pretty great
It's far more backloaded than I'll Sleep When You're Dead which was frontloaded if anything.
RAP Music is edging it at the moment.
It's a lovely day to go blitzkrieg isn't it
Anyone else
still playing this all the time?
Vinyl came this morning and I can confirm it sounds fucking amazing, especially on headphones.
to those who say it's backloaded, I don't think theirs a single bad track. Well... the first track I sometimes skip but that's it.
sooooooo
is anyone off the to tour then? Despot support on all dates :D
yeah boyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
no, he's not coming to Scotland
shame, one of maybe twenty artists/bands I'd be prepared to go to Glasgow to see as well :(
Yeah he is dude
Stereo in a couple of weeks.
September 18th
I've decided this is his worst album.
Still alright, but far from great.
.
Prefer it to I'll Sleep When You're Dead.
This is my favourite album of the year
Playing Bestival Sunday
Seeing him next week at Scala. Really like Despot. Looking forward to seeing him too.
Mixtape of all his singles, guestspots etc...
http://hardwoodblacktop.com/2012/09/06/despot-little-guy-high-horse/
so you should BUMP this shit - two years on
never really got into this album, felt like a bit of a misfire tbh, but going back to it now and enjoying it more than i did then.
how's it holding up for you?
It was my favourite album of that year and one of my all-time favourite hip-hop albums. His first two didn't (and still don't) do much for me, but he upped his game SO much on this- the production, the rhymes and his delivery and just spectacular.
Can't hyperbolate enough for this album.
I like this better than I'll Sleep...
but Fantastic Damage is one of my favourites ever.
I think I might have over-played this at the time because I get bored after the Danny Brown track.
it's maybe a little frontloaded
but the second half has Killer Mike and Despot on the same track and then For My Upstairs Neighbour.
still play it regularly and loudly
where's the proper Run the Jewels UK tour though? :'((((((
