EL-P: CANCER FOR CURE

sixteen_blue [Edit] [Delete] 69 replies 14:14, 24 April '12

Just completed my first spin of this record. I've had no real time to digest it yet but it's initially very impressive. Consistent, abrasive, full of jet black humour and head-snap beats. Could be a classic.

Anyone else heard it yet?

  • how long is it?

the only thing I don't like about anything El-P involved is that he rarely edits himself.

    Severed799 | 24 Apr '12, 14:46 | X
    • It's twelve tracks

Most of which are around three to four minutes with a couple of exceptions

Definitely one of my favorites of the year.

But I can't do it with this one. Skewed ethics perhaps, but it'd feel like nicking money out of my mum's purse: I wouldn't enjoy the sweets in the end anyway.

  • I'm slightly dissappointed

Only cos you expect EL-P records to come out of the box as fully formed monsters ready to engulf you into their warped parallel universe.

This ain't that. He's definitely not run out of ideas, filtering all kinds of industrial, dub step, grime etc. influences through his usual lo-fi high intensity sound, but I really doubt I'll still be combing through this album in 5 years time.

The music's pretty great, but it's not as much as a statement as I've come to demand from him. High expectations are a bitch.

P.S. Any EL-P fan should definitely check out the Killer Mike record he produced as it's streaming now. Loving this...

    whynot this'd this
    • I'm over it the whole *statement* thing

It's nice that he let a *little* bit of light in. It's another great album, I imagine it will win him a lot of new fans who found his previous albums overly dense too.

Killer Mike and El-P have been talking up the prospect of a full on dual-rapping collabo album. On the strength of Tougher Colder Killer & Butane, this would be fucking amazing.

        • I know the festival is going to be great

but I'm having to try hard not to let these drop outs put a bit of a downer on it all.

GBV, Bjork, Ultramagnetic MCs, Death Grips, and El-P were absolute must sees for me, and given how many bands you realistically see at a festival... that's quite a big chunk of it.

Can we have a free bar one night to make up for all the let downs?

          littlebirds @Scout | 24 May '12, 21:16 | X
          • Same to GBV and El-P

they were absolutely top of my list of people to get massively excited for :(

It's far more backloaded than I'll Sleep When You're Dead which was frontloaded if anything.

    • It was my favourite album of that year and one of my all-time favourite hip-hop albums. His first two didn't (and still don't) do much for me, but he upped his game SO much on this- the production, the rhymes and his delivery and just spectacular.

Can't hyperbolate enough for this album.
