If you were given the choice between
a) listening to a band that were well-known, or
b) listening to a similar band who were equally good but more obscure
would you have an instinctive preference for one of them? If so, can you describe why?
I think I would go for (b), and I'm trying to figure out if it's for any reason other than a kind of snobbery.

The thing that makes me think it's not just snobbery
is that I like plenty of stuff by very popular acts, and don't in any way have a problem with that.
The most satisfying answer I can find is that it feels like a more rewarding thing to do, because (assuming that liking this band translates into money for them at some point) I'm supporting someone who could use the attention more.
