B Fleischman - Pop Loops for Breakfast
Is def one I'd recommend. Melodious and smooth as opposed to clanky and cold.
maybe check David Borden, 'Enfield in Summer' is great, but his earlier stuff in the group Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company is also brilliant.
Also check Ezekiel Honig
couple more while i've a moment
Laurie Spiegel - the expanding universe (!)
early Cluster-realted stuff, selbstportrait perhaps?

The Black Dog - Spanners
is worth investigating. Early '90's ambient sounding stuff. Very melodic and warm sounding synths. Great album.
Boards of Canada, obviously
but I imagine you're looking for more obscure recommendations.
