Really, really gutted. Incredible drummer, singer, and seemed like a bloody nice bloke too.
crying my eyes out listening to Big Pink right now
Rest in peace.
Their S/T is one of my favourite records ever.
He taught them how to play!
Honestly. So so much.
Personally he's one of the most inspirational musicians from one of the most perfect groups i've ever discovered.
Christ, they were good.
reminisce and pour out a lil somethin'
TEEEEARS OF RAAAAAAAGE, TEEEEEARS OF GRIEEEEEEEEF
WHY MUST I ALWAAAAaaaaaYS BE THE THIEEEEEEEEEEF
Not only were they an incredible act in their own right but listening to them at the age of 14 genuinely broke the seals on a whole cavern of roots, folk and Americana that I've been falling in love with ever since.
Not going to go to bed until I've had a couple of shots of whiskey and listened to the first two records back to back. Seems at least some sort of a tribute. A one of a kind singer and a magnificent drummer.
I'm not particularly a believer in the afterlife but if it was to exist, they've got one hell of a harmony team up there right now: Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel.
Rest in Peace Levon. A true legend and one of my musical heroes.
If there's a better song to sing along to than 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' then I've yet to hear it.
Anyone who hasn't got Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt...get on that.
and Northern Lights today in tribute.
Wonderful, wonderful stuff. What a shame
I kind of envy you; listening to the Band for the first time. It's pretty special...
The second album is one of my favourite records of all time.
but people posting clips of The Last Waltz as a tribute..
it's a bit like paying tribute to James Cameron by encouraging people to watch Alien 3.
A thread full of praise for a truly great musician, interrupted by a single fuckwit.
what i'm trying to say is that the entire internet (not DiS as such) seems to be paying tribute to this great musician by bigging up a film that he himself despised. just seems a bit inappropriate to me.
Always one fucking arsehole has to come along.
