Track __ is usually my favourite on an album
On average, it's either track two (or sometimes track three). It's quite rare that I love an opening track more than the rest of a record. There are quite a few records recently that have the best stuff tucked away at the back end, like track seven seems to be my new track two.
Let's get scientific here and see if we can find any patterns by genre or era or something.

Track seven is almost always...
...a commercial/crowd pleaser - gives you the lift when you might otherwise be flagging. Check it out, it's true 90% of the time, some of the time.

Track 17
You've just listened to 16 tracks of mind-numbingly dull drone music when... BAM... you realise they've pulled the old Track 17 trick. You realise the beauty not just of Track 17, but of everything that has come before it too, and start to softly weep into a nearby cushion.
I remember it used to be track 8 for me, but that was when I liked the Kaiser Chiefs and stuff

As above it's ALWAYS track 7 - or 6
and they say, don't "they", that this is a historical throw back to the LP days where the first track on side 2 was always an attention grabber. Oh yes.

First track and last track
Sometimes first track 'proper' (IE track 2).
usually track 2 (or 3 if there's an intro track)
sometimes track 10, ESPECIALLY if it's a last track.

Track 1 used to be so reliable
Now, half the time it's some pointless intro or skit of whatever. So track 2 is really track 1 a lot of the time, as well as still being track 2 where appropriate.
Like, on Burial's Untrue, what's track 1? Archangel, surely? But no. It's the little untitled intro. Archangel is track 2, but it's really track 1 as it's the first 'song'. That's why it's really good.
