It's all in the name of gradual homogenisation
Basically, the powers that be (i.e. people who go to Tune-Yards concerts) have decided that being indie is wrong, so are gradually trying to phase out words such as 'band', 'guitar' and 'music'. In five years you'll be listening exclusively to one song by Lady Gaga, who has the hair colour of your choice, with the option to add/delete synthesiser and synthesisers that sound like guitars to your liking.

I THINK the good Sonic Youth records are great but they are also pretty murky sounding (with the exception of the first dancey one) recording wise. It adds to the records but it would be quite easy for you to say 'this sounds muddy' and just turn it off.
The later ones that I don't like as much are cleaner sounding pretty samey and not that exciting and can have bad singing on them. I know there are some good songs but i'm not fussed on most of it.
They have the SYR series which are quite noisy and formless in the main.
What I are saying is they are quite difficult to get into whether you're a close minded 13 year old or not. If you don't like the later period albums which have some nice chiming guitar bits but not a huge amount else it is going to take some perseverance.
