No
I think Pablo Honey was their best album
and I kind of lost interest when they went away from "rock out with your cock out" style songs. Your thorts?
Favourite track on Pablo Honey?
Apart from Creep obvs. I reckon Prove Yourself.
I always liked Thinking About You.
Blow Out
You
Vegetable
No, not really.
I had a listen to Pablo Honey last night
I tell you one thing, it's not How Do You.
Man
This is beginning to make me sad, as I do kind of want a Radiohead thread that is real, as I listened to them for the first time in a couple of years on Monday :(
Bite
Their best song is called Pyramid Song
Their best contribution to modern music since OK Computer is absorbing bucket loads of jazz and allowing that to slightly bend their songs, to wash them in a jazzy hue.
well of course I'd like to sit around and chat
wow...
I think this is what it feels like to be kik in the football thread sometimes.
a mixture of head scratching and vague amusement.
parodied!
I really like Hail To The Thief
Plenty of people on here seem to not like it all.
I often find myself going back to Amnesiac more than Kid A too. Packt Like Sardines, Pyramid Song, Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors is a great opening three. The flow is only really interruped by the disappointing newer version of Morning Bell.
Unorthodox, challenging, genre-confounding music
for people who don't really like unorthodox, challenging or genre-confounding music very much. It's a big part of why they're so successful.
That's actually a brilliant description
I have a lot of respect for them for being so massive and yet making really quite uncommercial music and still having that crossover appeal.
Probabkly the mst inconsistent band ever
I'm not a huge radiohead fan, and that's largely because I absolutely love some of their albums, but I also absolutely hate some of them. I was particularly struck hard by "The King of Limbs" last year, and it came top of my albums of the year list on my website (http://therivieraworld.blogspot.co.uk/). From the moment I first heard it I thought it was pretty much a masterpiece, although I wholeheartedly know many people will dispute me on that. For me, it's a bit hit and miss with Radiohead, so here's a guide (OK Computer aside)...
Radiohead albums you SHOULD own:
The Bends- Their last stab at being a "proper" rock band. Slow- burning but infinitely epic.
Kid A- An absolute godsend and easily their best album to date, in my opinion. Still wondering if they'll ever better it.
In Rainbows- A little inconsistent perhaps, but "All I Need" is probably worth it on its own.
The King Of Limbs- Opinion dividing, weird, modern, technical... Probably the strangest Radiohead record to date, but a fantastic piece of work at that.
Radiohead albums to avoid:
Pablo Honey- Ok, so you don't necessarily need to avoid it, but it's nothing special as far as I'm concerned. I know that may anger lots of people on here...
Amnesiac- Pretty Boring if you ask me. "Pyramid Song" is so dull.
Hail To The Thief- I really didn't like this album whatsoever. Radiohead either do what they do really well or horrendously badly, and although this was a slight return to their more guitar- orientated sound, I just did not care for it at all.
It's interesting you should say that.
But one thing is puzzling me, I can't understand how Pyramid Song is dull yet tKoL was your album of the year last year. could you please elaborate on that?
Well, Pyramid Song just doesn't excite me in any way at all. Radiohead have always been innovative, but they've always had that tendency to wodner into the territory of the supremely mediocre and boring, and Pyramid Song is one such song.
Every single song on TKOL, bar maybe Codex, is innovative, strange, creative and interesting. You can't argue that there are many slow- burning, piano pieces like Pyramid song on that record, can you? It's just a lot more out there. It's radiohead not only testing and stretching the tastes of their listeners but also questionning just how far they can take a new sound. You certainly don't get a sense of that from tracks like Pyramid Song.
I'm sorry
but you have failed at music
Pyramid Song
is sublime. It dwarves TKOL.
Difficult to love
They're inventive. Challenge the status quo. All the qualities one looks for.
The results are often mediocre. Thom Yorke's voice is a high-pitched strain on my ears more often than not.
For most, Yorke's voice is not an issue, and the band has gained a reputation for doing no wrong. I feel reluctant to disagree, even though I do. They are really, really cool.
Radiohead have a handful of tunes that are flat out great. And the fact that their best album, In Rainbows, came at this stage in their career, is encouraging. Nevermind, TKOL is their worst. They took a chance and it didn't pan out. It's not terrible, by any means, and artists should push themselves.
Not my favorite band, but the planet is a better place with Radiohead in the mix.
can't believe this has turned into a radiohead discussion
yes you can
you're right
this thread has brought no surprises.
I really think it's the best thing to do in these threads.
Some good stuff early on (just after Pablo Honey)
Dull at dishwater since. One thing I have always wondered is why do people like Karma Police so much? I have never liked it.
Not really a fan of Radiohead
But I have to admire how they have never caved into public pressure and recruited a drummer.
They just use funny effects on their guitars
:D
I lost belief in Radiohead when I read that the artwork was partly a response to the political discussion surrounding the September 11 attacks and subsequent war in Afghanistan
"I was listening to lots of Radio 4. Whenever I heard words that rang bells in my head, I'd write them down, until I had this really long list, which is basically much of the artwork."
http://sleevage.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/09/hailtothe_theif.jpg
What? Really! What are you on about mate?
not sure what your problem with that is?
It's the most pretentious thing I have ever heard. Look at the artwork!
Having said that they have released some great tunes, even post PB
It's a big list of words. Just like he said. And?
It's apparently his response to 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan.
It's the kind of thing an A Level Art student would come up with.
apparently
Source? I've read that when asked in an interview if the album was a political one, he said that it wasn't, although certain themes may be taken from what was happening in the media at the time. I see no problem with this. Music has typically been influenced by the "times". I feel like you're trying to take issue with something that isn't actually there.
http://www.nme.com/news/radiohead/14157/photo/44
I just feel that if you are going to reference something with as much political weight, it should have some depth.
like the lyric to I Will?
You call that deep?
I can see I've struck a nerve with you.
Let's just agree to disagree, mkay?
You're quoting NME
who are notorious for putting more weight on statements made by artists than they're worth. I think the artwork is barely a representation of the album itself, (and it's basically just a word scramble anyway) and Radiohead were explicitly not setting out to create an album that was a big statement on the current situation, I think most people will agree.
All I'm saying is
it insists upon itself.
They're massively overrated
Cheers.
They remind me of Boris Johnson's thinner brother fronting a Guardian in-house band
But I like them.
Most people who love Radiohead
won't say so on a forum like DiS because they're sick of discussing them, which is fair enough. But for me personally I started off listening to Pablo Honey and making my way through them chronologically. It's a natural progression that eased me into other genres when I was a young teenager. In fact I'd say Radiohead were responsible for my love of electronic and alternative music today. Take from that what you will. They're the perfect gateway band.
There's a LOT of radiohead bashing on here
It's tedious in the extreme how people will sometimes fall over themselves to price how much the HATE radiohead and HATE the other bands that NON DISSERS MAY HAVE HEARD OF!!
well done, have the indie points, you win the internet.
well, what about ...
'Anyone can play guitar'
When it comes on the ole shuffle, I can be heard bellowing out:
'Destiny, destiny protect me from the world ..
You can't stop me, I know all the words. It is THE song I could sing at a karioke.
I love it!
They can be hit and miss
Which is the thing I like best about them.
It would be ready for them to repeat themselves, bit instead they try different things, with mixed results.
Radiohead
So...the Music board must be pretty crap atm then?
All you diehard best-band-ever Radiohead fanboys
are going to be so embarrassed in about ten years' time when the historical perspective starts to kick in. Either that, or you'll be sad paunchy dad-rockers grumbling about how music's gone to shit since you was a young 'un. Radiohead, lad, now that were proper music.
no
Haha,
'Pablo Honey' is nearly 20 years old already.
Should we wait another 20? Just to get the right perspective you know.
Pablo Honey is your counter argument?
lol
I dunno
But as a well known Radiohead fanboy (tattoo etc) I both dislike fervent Radiohead worshipping (see mediamodia's comment) and abusive Radiohead hatred who treat them like they're the most repugnant thing ever to happen to music.
I know a lot about music, I have an eclectic, open minded taste and I've pretty much been a music 'lover' for about 5 years. Now, the only reason I say that is to prove that I think I have a good judgement on music. If I was to try and put in to words the reason I love Radiohead, it would be because they fuse many different genres I love. Rock, IDM, jazz, modern classical AND POP. Like blisters said up, they make Unorthodox, challenging, genre-confounding music for people who don't like Unorthodox, challenging, genre-confounding music. But that's exactly why I like them. They're approachable, easy to listen to. If I don't feel in the mood for an Evan Parker sax freak out or want something a little more melodious then Luigi Nono's Prometeo or want something a little more human than Autechre's computer breakdowns, then I go to Radiohead.
Also from the fact that I think Thom Yorke is an absolutely amazing song writer. From the lyrics to his voice, I don't connect as fully with any other musicians as I do with Thom. That's something visceral, raw & pretty much beyond my control.
So I know I've put myself up as a target but oh well. My name is james, and I love Radiohead. There, I've said it.
