Rolling Pop Thread 2012
i can see no reason why not. open to basically anything, but i'm trusting you'll know what i mean by pop, ie not a belle and sebastian b-side.
carly rae jepsen - call me maybe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic
sort of gay club pop but i can't resist that chorus, it's insidious.
nicki minaj - starships
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-8MagxjOrE
even with that unsubtle party rock lite drop, i still love it
katy perry - part of me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuwfgXD8qV8
1. pretty sure this is paid for by the us military. 2. hilarious that she's doing army training with glamour makeup on. 3. i'm pretty sure this song proves that there is an exact specific written formula to writing a song for katy perry, because they all sound utterly identical. but for some reason, i like this identical one more than the others.
usher - climax
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJBeZ2cDGQQ
digging the glitchy rnb thing.
azealia banks - NEEDSUMLUV
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wbxmy9lkbY4
maybe my fav pop/rnb based track of the year.
also if it keeps lana del rey threads off the front page you can do all your LDR puns and long wall of text critiques in here. lana, YOU A STUPID HOE.

Iggy Pop
Gwen Stefani
Climax is running away with it atm. Love it.
New Bieber song is all kinds of in my head despite not really liking it, sounds WAY too much like a Justified b-side or something, but its in my head soooo...
Miguel has released 2 free 3-track mixtapes (art dealer chic 1&2) which contain these cool jams:
Adorn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxjn7R_TU0o
Arch n Point
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W331-zsj90
adorn is awesome, i like that a lot
i'm about to trawl through the new nicki minaj album, the fact that i'm seeing nas's name in the tracklist does not bode well for my hope that she'd ditch trying to be serious.
as for bieber
i'm just waiting for his inevitable and surely entertaining rap career
he's been testing those waters for ages
I'm embarassed to say this
but the Bieb is looking pretty hot on that single cover. Great song too, if you can get past the ridiculous/grammatically incorrect fondue line.
Just listening to this new JB track
Definitely sounds like a bad attempt at Justified, it's too sickly-sweet, which to be fair is Bieber's market I guess. It's written/produced by that Mike Posner guy as well who is one of the most ridiculous douchebags I have ever come across. I mean, just look at this for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axpO86pGHAM
Utter, blood-boiling garbage.
Also, does JB actually say 'swaggy' at one point?
big fan of the new Marina & The Diamonds single innit. the scissor sisters one with azealia banks was good as well
I can't wait for the new Minaj album
I can't get on with Starships though, I'm just hoping this is more rappy
really??
if i thought she could mix the rap and the pop properly i wouldn't mind but i haven't heard her do anything like that since the barbie world tape
*anything good
Her verse on Where Them Girls At is fucking amazing
I love Roman in Moscow but that isn't on the album. Basically I like it when she sounds insane not when she sounds insipid.
i don't like the ballads/slower shit
and i feel like she completely wrapped up that psycho flow thing on monster, after that verse all her other versions of that just seem bland
but i have to say stupid hoe has grown on me a disturbing amount
the one she played at the grammy's [roman's holiday] sounded incredible. i like it when it's just a kick drum/snare behind her calling people cunts + whatnot, though obv super bass is her + everyone else's best song.
you're gonna love the first 4 tracks of the album
i think they're really entertaining batshit tracks, not pop singles
but overall it's a bit of a drag, a good 5 or 6 singles i can hear tho
Aye, there's a very clear point where I utterly lost interest
Good stuff before that though. Roman Holiday is batshit mental
Dawn Richard - Bombs Away
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9y9x9pibM8
New EP is out.
Sweden's eurovision entry
worming into your ear soon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nJcmLMb5to
it's no lena
i was in a pub quiz the other day where the answer was lena. i won a horrible bottle of wine
Pop trance!
Just pop: Denmark's eurovision entry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIXK_hx6DXs
Chairlift count as pop, right?
Love their album (even if the second half is a wee bit weaker), posting about it wherever possible:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atKuhrPnLq8&ob=av2n
Basically if you like the 80s you'll love this.
not really into them but
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0sqqi0G5a8
the chorus on this song is awesome, and just sort of lost in 6 minutes of das racist messing about
Yeah that's the first place I heard them
Never considered looking into them any further but saw them at a Young Turks showcase the other day by chance and from then on I was hooked.
A*M*E - Ride or Die
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BE7lxzinPoY
there's a lot to like about this
The video <3
jojo ~ sexy to me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtGOTwEEarM
i mean i know her voice is awful but always partial to a faintly depressing danja production job, that always seem to slightly undercut the confidence of the singer but being a bit grim...(the epitome of this is obv. blackout but this is cool too)
Love this
This still needs more attention
H.B.K Gang, fuck bitches, do your thang.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3ixHljTN3U
My faves YTD
School of Seven Bells - Scavenger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ww2GvE9GoDs
The Gossip - Perfect World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh7_pEjX34U
Blackbird Blackbird - New Leaf
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llKNilmVvSc
and M.I.A., of course.
http://i.imgur.com/UGMol.jpg
In a pop thread?
The Dream - Kill the Lights
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WyH9b9W4_Q
not bad
but it leaves me a bit cold :/
speaking of the dream i'm now rekindling my love for 'florida university' ha.
Agree not a bad jam.
Just kind of sits there and never goes anywhere. Will probably sit on the album nicely tho, he creates a nice flow on his long players. Good pacing etc.
F U is weird, I've hated it and loved it, not sure where I stand now.
it's so bouncy and stupid
kinda like the good black eyed peas singles except he sounds like he's having waaaay more fun with it
I was listening to Let Me See That Booty yesterday, really fucking loud
I love it when The-Dream does dumb shit like that. Florida University was the soundtrack to my final summer at Uni, so much fun.
Hoodie Allen - No Interruption
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_t431MAUQlQ#!
just let the 6/10 drake impression wash over you, i pretty much love the chorus.
Santigold - Disparate Youth
The Keepers, also
I don't like anything in this thread :-(
Euro-house, trance and dubstep need to get the fuck out of pop music.
I thinks you would like the dawn Richard ep tho maybe.
I'll check it out.
Felt like I should like that bombs tune but it didn't really click. That kind of beat has been done to death and it doesn't really go anywhere, plus I found her voice kind of flat and uninteresting.
I was having an argument the other day with someone
who was claiming pop music is better today than it was ten years ago. It's hard to be more wrong about something than he was.
Really hard to find good pop
and even still it is all slathered with those trends you mention above. The random track sticks out here or there but the genre is pretty stagnant indeed.
hm?
i'm extremely skeptical of that. people tend to think pop music was better x years ago because they have the luxury of only recalling all of the good moments, and completely forgetting the bad. i would agree there was some really cool stuff happening pop music around the turn of the millenium and that there is an increasingly throw-shit-and-see-what-sticks mentality but all that said i don't think there's a drought by any means.
i can totally see how if you preferred a certain style and trend (like what was happening 04 to 06ish) what's trending now might just seem boring but i think the inventiveness and fun is still there, that never went away.
Generally I'm against the crusty old 'things were better in...' mentality.
But I genuinely think the quality of pop and r&b has declined over the last year or two, and for this I totally blame David Guetta and all the trance shit.
It's not just a hind sight forgetting all the crap thing either. I genuinely think the best that pop had to offer 10 years ago was infinitely more fun and interesting than today, and there was lots more of it!
I mean compare these two lists:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_top_10_singles_in_2001
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_top_10_singles_in_2011
Sure theres a whole load of gash in both of them but I count at least 17 songs I love in the 2001 one when I struggle to find 7 in the 2011 one.
i don't think those links tell an accurate story
on a purely side by side comparison, yeah, 2001 looks better.
but look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_top_10_singles_in_2002 just a year later and compared to the 2001 list, definitely not as strong.
and let's consider the songs from and not from that 2011 list that were great: beyonce's countdown, super bass, all of the lights, motivation, gucci gucci, we found love, call your girlfriend, headlines...
I don't know
Everyone now wants to sound like the Guetta/Calvin Harris model, or like post-Gaga 80s synthpop, and that's what's led to the return of trad boy bands. One Direction and The Wanted are successful in America now because they've been precision targeted at a demographic that got forgotten - boy bands were dead except in NKOTBSB nostalgia while the most commercial end of pop is either aimed at the clubs or so sexualised it says nothing to the kids.
I don't think, though, that taking ten years ago as standard really helps, because then you're on the far side of the Xenomania/Richard X 'pop not as a dirty word' production thing and pop is still coming out of its supermarket and Saturday morning target markets, the latter of which doesn't exist any more. Here's a proper best selling singles of the year list - http://www.vanityedge.com/forum/showthread.php?5033-The-best-selling-UK-singles-(2001) A lot of it feels like a completely different market.
re your first paragraph
the boy band thing is just a nostalgia trend, i find it pretty easy to ignore that (when i need to)
the guetta/harris sound...i'm not completely against it, but it can be boring as hell. i really think it depends where you consume most of your pop music - for example i know some pop orientated raido stations will lean heavily in favour of that style, whereas others will take a more rnb approach. and it depends what kind of clubs you might go to. and even down to little stuff like what music sites you visit daily and what youtube recommends you watch based on your previous videos. it's a saturated market but with that you can pick and choose easier than ever before.
o look who's back
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk7P1lKkCG0
THAT MACBOOK BELONGS TO MEEEE
:')
THis was really disappointing to me.
Whole album was really bad too :(
call me maybe is incredible. only just heard it for the first time and it's brilliant
ridiculously infectious
heard it last week and it just won't leave my head
Like the opening line
But the strings on the chorus in my opinion, diminish the impact rather than bolster it. Missed opportunity.
have we mentioned gun shots & that batshit one at the start...
roman holiday weirdly reminds me of a 10-yo covering 'there goes a tenner'. in a good way
the video for beez in the trap is awesome
rick ross feat. future - ring ring
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5yC129d1Bs&feature=g-logo&context=G264c7e5FOAAAAAAAGAA
combines two of my favourite ridiculous people, doesn't disappoint.
for more future good stuff here he is with T.I. being utterly intelligible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY7mHqFi_Kk
bieber's boyfriend is really growing on me at an alarming rate
Nelly Furtado - Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)
http://youtu.be/5zPft6Hxttc
i like the katy perry song you linked to
and i agree - it's the best of the identical bunch. some how.
they've split up now
which is what i guess the song it about.
I don't know where to put this cos its not a single
and its from last year and whatever but I don't want to start a thread on it and Im basically just interested in what the DiS pop fans think of it cos I love it, cornmeal and all:
Robin Thicke - Never Give Up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BApKa2DQugw
Ive got all kinds of love for Robin Thicke btw.
CAKE CAKE CAKE CAKE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zj30ZrNpNw
ok so this is obviously a bit of an awkward pairing to put it lightly. in fact the more i think about it the more uncomfortable it makes me.
but i can't resist :/
he really loves his rum!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ScTap3lPJVg#!
the twist in the video made me laugh, he somehow successfully crowbars that serious message in the middle.
This is great!
Trey Songz - Heart Attack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLUqmv1_5oQ
obv a little more r&b leaning but I don't want to start a rolling r&b thread yet so w/e.
what are we thinking about the new r kelly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3ufEF45-J4
personally i think it' a bit too gimmicky, he's not being himself enough. it's a damn good replica of that commercial 70s soul sound, but there's just not enough of him doing his thing for my liking.
It fits in with his new direction
that he started in on with his new album. I like it a lot but also completely get what you mean, it doesn't have that R Kelly wtf factor at all.
Rye Rye - Go! Pop! Bang!
Hotter, Better than u, ...
http://soundcloud.com/igamusic/sets/rye-rye-go-pop-bang
tell the hostess fill it up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE4oZyp2RuU
I love her voice
but haven't heard her on a track I really like yet, shame really. Really hope Ruby Lee Ryder breaks thru in a simular way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZotuKB6BhcY that's pure pop joy to me that track. More so that that Jessie track.
Loads of mega fun pop remixes from Funkystepz, people like Rihanna, Usher, Drake, J.Cole, Craig David, etc...
http://www.sendspace.com/file/12q64g
Why can't more pop be a bit ruder?
Oliver Twist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQP-etYU1ps
Top 10 business. Nice to have something a bit diffrent up there. Not heard mcuh in the way of african house hit the charts. This si doing what I thought UK funky might have doen a few years ago. Biggles.
superb
aaaaaahahahaha:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0JErGktWvA
there's so much amazing happening i can't fully process it. is that dj pauly wine? what year is it? is he spitting champagne at his fans? it's such a generic party anthem.
Alexandra Stan - Lemonade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eWfRjyp2Nc
don't think i love it quite as much as mr saxobeat but this is decent
Hard to beat saxobeat yeah.
this is nice
reminds me of lily allen but not annoying
reminds me kind of that lady gaga song where the video is also about guidos. can't remember the name.
Cassie - King Of Hearts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI0Q0my8a64
hasn't been mentioned yet
Trey Songz & TI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itnvwZ4Z1Hc
r&bpop
TI has been doing some good guest spots lately
he really makes that beat go
When he gets a beat that goes,
he can still smash it. Sounds great over grimy stuff too. He's just been so lackluster with his rapping the last few solo releases, paired with mediocre production. idk, hard to believe he can release anything as good as Trap Muzik again but these solid guest spots are welcome.
I like this a lot.
my god
this is so good
oh my
just listened to this 3 times straight.
Love this.
Hooray, glad to see these guys getting some love on DiS!
Maybe a little bit dancey for this thread
But have AlunaGeorge fans heard the vocals they've put on Rustie's After Light? I like this mix:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r68D9VBOA0I
new JB song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8pDA8HJ9qQ&feature=relmfu
i love the rolling drums of the chorus
Ugh am I gonna have to start liking the Biebs?
As long as I balance it out with some hard street rap I should be fine.
Nicki verse on that is scary bad.
SELENER
<3 this thread
Minaj's new album is SO GOOD.
I don't think I've loved a woman more. I think women in pop are having their year. Minaj, Katy Perry, Florence and the machine (she's pop, right?)
Best off minaj are roman holiday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOYkMihHKCM
and SEX IN THE LOUNGE ooh yeahh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy03r01I2Mc
Also, Boyfriend by Bieber is beyond catchy even if the rappy bits are well cringe and I love that carley ray jepson song. it never gets old. bye.
That Coldplay Rihanna song
I like it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Uw6ZkbsAH8
Gimme little piece of your mind, gimme little minute of your time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NETIU1NLzhs
The thumped bass does me in. Prob not standard pop but there's no other place to put this, kinda sounds kinda the-dreamy.
Can someone make this into a spotify playlist please?
Its just what i need today (I don't have spotify on my pc though!)
pitbull :')
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5SG7U76tls&feature=branded
he looks like someone from sales middle management won a competition to be a pop star, something so awkward about it
also i'm so completely numb to call me maybe now, what a sad state of affairs
TAYLOR IS BACK
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBsEd_L_JDY
think maybe it's a grower
POPSMASH
or not?
anyway the new trey songz album is pretty decent
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oscwwNcy7dk
and of course, a song called 'panty wetter' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5gV6P6c0Vw
GONNA GET YOU WETTER THAN A FOUNTAIN
OH THEIR FALLIN OFF MY MOUNTAIN
More pop than this ,
Will be hard to find.
http://snd.sc/Q9Zdnz
GANGNAM STYLE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0
heeeeey sexy lady!
excellent as ever
i was not aware of this guy PSY before now
SMASH HITS
Didn't work. Thread is dead :(
new carly rae:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2CjP4nCWwo
average, but not bad. the album comes out this week i think.
man this album is actually so much better than i was expecting
the slower tracks are (predictably) duller but there's actually only about 2 of those, there's easily 5 or 6 good singles here.
turn me up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3HwNucuZhg
hurt so good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awQ_lt51LFs
tonight i'm getting over you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjRT4U7S4YE
that last one especially (from none other than max martin) is destined to be a megahit. at first you're not sure but by the end it's huge.
Gonna check this out.
Loads of tunes on this.
YOUR HEART IS A MUSCLE, lol but YEAAA
Tonight... is obv gonna be massive, I kinda wish the drop wasnt sooooo obvious but thats the state of affairs, still a total belter.
Besides the ones you said This Kiss and the Wedding Ring songs are also cool.
This has like 8 potential singles on it for real.
Yeah no good.
I hated Loose at first but I think it def has some jams, enough to pull it out of the 'shitty' realm imo.
Do It is the one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Asy6Cpbtwfs
Tina S Club - Fire
http://youtu.be/3pMikWMgywQ
cassie - balcony
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=527bo1bgsBs
jeezy strikes again. but i really like this generally. i can't express how much i love king of hearts, what an incredible tune. really hope that album sees the light of day this year.
Jeezy is awesome.
This song is good.
These are my favourite popular music songs at the moment
Wiley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qimiWfZAtXw
Taylor Swift www.youtube.com/watch?v=WA4iX5D9Z64
Karmin www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8cbak34DR0
Cheers
That T Swift song is
growing on me, but it kind of plods a little bit.
I've not heard it til now
It smacks a bit too much of her trying to be Katy Perry, all the stupid asides and silly lyrics. I love Taylor as well. Probably won't ever hear it again anyway so nevermind.
Is Katy Perry into little asides?
Thought she just dialled up the foghorn and let rip for 3 minutes at a time.
The asides don't *quite* work in this, but I still like them for being there; pretend phone calls in songs are always great though.
i want to hate that karmin song
it's like really standard katy perry lite (if you can imagine such a thing) but god it's getting under my skin.
So AlunaGeorge are up for a MOBO
http://www.mobo.com/voting
Best Newcomer. Go vote for them, yeah?
Here's their new video too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfCSx5641U4
rihanna - diamonds
http://soundcloud.com/rihanna/diamonds
not sure. i like the production and her voice is really good, but just not sure about the song itself yet.
I dont like how she
sings 'shine bright like a diamond' I dont like the phrasing on it for some reason.
i reckon the tegan and sara can go in here too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7MNGPmrlW0
v. addictive.
what do people think of Robbie Williams' new single, then?
here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtOV7bp-gys
It's cheesy, but I quite like it. It reminds me of 'All Star', for some reason.
gimmicky
but actually this is maybe the first robbie williams song i've heard that hasn't revolted me to my core
so that's good. it's kinda fun.
Yeah, I won't listen to it again
but it was an enjoyable 4 minutes or whatever
solange - losing you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy9W_mrY_Vk
might be more of a candidate for that RnB thread that still doesn't exist BUT OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS SONG HOLY SHIT.
Good song is good.
I was gonna wait to do the rnb thread for 2013 but maybe I should roll it out now?
Do it
I think we can probably do with one permanent rolling thread tbh.
fantastic new taylor swift:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY19UekAORQ
very rihanna chorus, in fact so much so i wish she was singing it. but it's a great song.
