Listened to this for the first time in ages. Not a genre I'm especially clued up on but god damn, what a fucking record.
I think Panopticon is better tho
Neurosis - A Sun that Never Sets and Through Silver in Blood
Cult of Luna - Salvation or Somewhere Along the Highway
Battle of Mice - A Day of Nights
Pelican - March into the Sea EP (I kinda hated everything they released after this for some reason)
Jesu - Conqueror
there were hundreds of crappy post-metal bands around at one point eh? I used to listen to so much of this shit
kinda transcends the rest of this music - it's one of my probably 3 or 4 favourite records of the 1990s
utterly staggering achievement imo
but generally Neurosis are in another league
still the rest is worth listening to
A bit more 'pop' than TSIB, with the pros and cons that brings. From The Hill, Crawl Back Inside, Watchfire and Stones From The Sun are monstrous
Oceanic > Panopticon in my opinion.
is probably my favourite especially if you play Tribes of Neurot's Grace album at the same time.
Isis are ace too. Celestial, Oceanic and Wavering Radiant hit the spot for me.
I've still not heard Panopticon.
Love Oceanic though.
Which is probably why I haven't got round to hearing Panopticon.
Panopticon is much closer in tone to Oceanic than ITAOT...it is also Isis' best IMO...just shading Oceanic and Wavering Radiant. ITAOT is the one Isis album I almost never listen to though Dulcinea and Garden of Light are both great tracks.
is my favourite Isis album, and its the one that I had the most trouble with. But it is so unique sounding and even abit weird, I still find it fascinating.
it wouldn't be the first time i'd revisited an older bands perceived (by me) weaker album and been pleasant surprised.
I think it has the best percussion of all their records. Hence: I love it.
I know their final two albums don't get the same level of love but I think they're pretty good too.
The first run of releases up to and including Panopticon are brilliant. Tales off a bit after that but still some great songs hidden amongst the last couple of albums.
Never get bored of it.
listening to Oceanic makes the average metaller appear to be more intelligent than his/her overweight peers
Second only to the battle of mice album in the post metal genre for me, though i have time for cult of luna and sika redem
More because it was the first Isis record I came across and it totally blew my mind.
I like both Oceanic and Panopticon. But i don't ever feel the need to try any of their other albums
My blog is called From Sinking. Yup.
Is the best post-metal album ever.
Because it's the first one I heard. I love all their records though. Such a great band.
....AAAAAAAAND SO DIIIIID WEEEE
Isis were at their best when a) riffing or b) drifting - sophistication never really fitted them
of course I'm not certain that Celestial (The Tower) isn't their best song...
it's all thanks to this 'ere site that I listened to it, a piece by Mr. Diver made me seek it out and I became obsessed! Although Panopticon just about scrapes it for me, Oceanic I never get tired of listening to.
4) In the Absence of Truth
5) Wavering Radient
Album-wise anyways. I heard Celestial first and instantly fell in love but Panopticon is just the perfect Isis record for me, the pinnacle of their career.
I feel like Isis started as a Metal band and ended as a Post-rock band. So for me the true "Post-Metal" sound came roughly in the middle with Panopticon
