fair play to them
band who sells the most tickets (generates most income for company) wins.
Offered prize. Chance to play festival in foreign country
Prize doesn't exist.
obviously, a company ripping people off is never a good idea, but I can't honestly fathom what kind of musicians would enter something as hokey as this in the first place.
The whole thing is a crock of shit.
Anyone who ever played in a band. Anyone who ever made a stupid mistake. Anyone who loves music and cherishes the creative buzz of small gigs and diy/punk/folk ethics will be able to see that Chris Grayston's cynical enterprise is a blot on any landscape. Naive, enthusiastic, hopeful (often isolated) bands are conned and bullied into selling expensive tickets for terrible performances to friends and family.
Blaming both Grayston AND his victims (@guntrip) is part of the problem. Having been taken for a ride, the bands themselves are often too embarrassed to complain or report their stories. Like it or not, fantasies of fame and fortune are part of the rock and roll culture. Amazing things DO happen. Sadly, never via L&U. One man band Grayston has never made anyone famous, rich, or happy - but he has presided over hundreds of terrible gigs and taken stupid money from loyal friends and proud parents. Never mind the multiple text voting that even some bands have chucked hundreds of pounds into. It's time for cynics to shut up and let some fresh air into this story. Music journalists in general have been disappointingly weak in not tackling it, and the Musicians Union have found it hard to justify putting their slender resources into fighting it.
DiS is EXACTLY the sort of community place that should be shouting loud and proud to have this thing shut down. There has been a long campaign in Leeds that has kept Grayston (and Jay Mitchell of Surface Festival) away.
