I received the most insane demo CD today
For years I've been putting on gigs (mostly garage-rock type stuff) and putting out records.
Therefore, I'm often sent demos. These days it's more usual for me to be sent emails with links to Soundcloud or whatever. Although the occasional CD still pops through the letterbox.
This CD came in the post this morning, loose in an envelope, no protective cardboard or anything, from somewhere in the middle of nowhere anyone's ever heard of, in British Columbia, Canada.
The covering letter said:
"Hello. I like punk music. I have thousands of hours of singing practice. Singing is all I did in high school. I included in the envelope a CD of me singing, from a few years ago. I only had a one minute recorder on my computer so I sang fast. My regular style is slower. But I do enjoy singing fast. The songs are comprised of bands that have inspired me. I am looking for a band and have not had much success. I hope that by writing to record labels and including a CD of me singing might get me help. I do not play an instrument. I would like to make music. Please phone and mail me if interested."
This CD simply has to be heard. So I made it all into just one track and uploaded it to Soundcloud, for your listening pleasure.

I'm not sure what to say.
Stunning.
I posted it on my Facebook
My friends seem to generally agree with you.
Fantastic!
Reminds me of Wild Man Fischer for some reason.
Exactly what a friend of mine on FB said!
reminds me a bit of
the dust blows forward and the dust blows back
is this trolling
or is it amazing
i can't decide
Same here, me neither...
new neutral milk hotel: not as good as first anticipated
What the actual...
jesustittyfuckingchrist
For reasons I can't fathom
I'm listening through all of it. The one at 5 minutes in defies description.
This may well be someone's idea of a joke, although it's a moderately amusing one if so.
Oh man, I've just reached that one
:''''D
Offspring's best album. :D
^Prefers Ryan's earlier stuff.
My favourites are...
6m40s
8m40*
10m30s
12m25s
13m35s
*Thought he was singing Drowned In Sound at 8m50s & 9m15s on this track, but it's 'Drowned in self pity'. Oh well.
If I was dedicated to INTERNET, I'd start a tumblr doing a really in depth review of each song, with flowery language and all kinds of cross-cultural references.
Currently half way through listening for a second time. And it's even better.
Are all the songs covers?
If so, are people clocking who and what they are?
The one at 5 minutes is 'Bad Habit' by The Offspring
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wMa_t5cBgY
He also does Goldfinger - 'Superman' towards the end. I think those were the only ones I noticed.
Self Esteem by The Offspring is near the end as well.
Although he's given it an exciting new melody.
I feel like I'm being suckered into some kind of carefully-designed viral PR campaign or something
but this is... um... I don't know what this is.
If this gets picked up it's gonna get remixed more times than Rebecca Black
I think the ones where he's channelling Beavis are the best
Halfway through
It'd be a copout to stop now, wouldn't it?
I've reached 8:40 and I'm giving up
Partly because I don't think it's gonna be able to top that last one, partly because I've now got a really strong desire to listen to Dead Milkmen. And partly because of my sanity.
Could you make it downloadable please.
I don't think I can do that without permission
And I'm not going to phone him in Canada. There's no email address on the letter.
phone him!
you won't spend much, guaranteed to be a quick call
I'm going to send him a postcard
I'll scan the postcard and upload it. And post all the correspondence between us.
Fair enough, it would be great to get everyone do their own remix.
Viral campaign?
I really did receive this demo in the post. I've googled the guy's name and the only site he's on is one called Bandmix, on which he names his influences as "Bad Religion, Offspring, Lag Wagon, Pennywise, NOFX, Beastie Boys, Good Riddance, Social Distortion, Vandals, Satanic Surfers, Ten Foot Pole, SNFU, Metallica, The White Stripes".
hi Tamlin
Tamlin's a mate of mine
I think he shared this on Facebook when I posted it there earlier this evening.
This
Is amazing PJ.
I think I'm going to remix this....
Oh, hey, Anthony. I shall look forward to hearing it.
Post to my Facebook when you've done it!
I really want to start a band with this guy.
I one beginning around 7:15
reminds me of Sterling Morrison's vocals in 'The Murder Mystery' by Velvet Underground. Pure genius.
Song Number 5
Sounds exactly like Jeffry Lewis
i'd buy this on vinyl
Whose songs are they?http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4333012
I googled the lyrics. The first two are Ten Foot Pole. Number three is by Goldfinger. Four is the band Good Riddance... Oh, god. I can't go on...
2:29 sounds a bit like Tom DeLonge if he was an auctioneer.
I like it.
Might
Try to put some drums & guitar behind some of these tomorrow as well if get time....
:/
like a satire of 'outsider music'. even if real it's nothing new or interesting. sorry.
i think you might be overthinking this one
He calls himself "punk"
I'm the one that put it up as "outsider" music.
yeah, i guessed as much
perhaps i'm just too cynical.
A lot of the time
this sounds oddly like Jeff Lewis.
Oops, didn't see
that Anthonyc had already posted this.
or a bit Daniel Johnston?
Suspect this will go viral
Comedy gold...
Not sure if this link will work

this will work
http://i40.tinypic.com/34yxsp0.jpg
this is immense
2nd and 4th are incredible
The 4th in particular. It's essentially horse racing commentary
Holy shit, they get better
8.08
These are fucking incredible.
I actually spat my tea all over my computer when the track at 5 mins came on.
The fact I don't hate this
Probably is a worrying sign
he needs to form a band with this girl who
also comes from rural canada, hotbed of utter insanity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKM0a0CsNS0
There was an article about her in The New Yorker
Not that funny, mildly interesting
I wouldn't be surprised if the guy is mentally ill, either...his letter certainly makes me think so... Which would make laughing and enjoying this a bit mean.
I dunno
I think part of the enjoyment is appreciating his enthusiasm for doing something he loves.
Exactly
Working in music in London it's pretty much impossible not be massively cynical but this guy he just loves Punk and doing what he loves!
Holy shit :D
This is incredible
This sounds like
Captain Beefheart
....
The 3rd one is Goldfinger also.
hmmmmmmm
this is either a joke or a nutter. Either way I managed to the offspring and then couldn't take it any more.
Amazing
Over 1500 people listened to this in just 17 hours. If only I could get that many people to check out an actual release on my label...
I think you know what you need to do then...
Oh, yeah....
Someone needs to put him in touch with Jud Jud
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpiHjKyJrZc
No. Words.
Cos he said 'em all.
Epic
Hang on, singer resides in Buttfuck, British Columbia
Tried google maps, that place doesn't exist. Is it made up?
Ha ha!
The place he lives is so small that it would make it too easy for someone to track him down. If someone in BC seriously wanted him in their band then I would privately message them with his details.
I was joking
I assumed you'd redacted it
I knew you were joking
That's why I started the reply with "Ha ha!"
Remix
Alright as promised here's the remix from Me & Olly! http://soundcloud.com/ollytheoctopus/fast-songs-hilo-lohi-remix
:D
*applauds*
Fantastic!
:'D
Actual tears.
That is actually
brilliant.
This genuinely made me spit out my tea
Utterly brilliant.
Oh god its gone Meta
'Hitler reacts to Ryan from British Columbia' anyone?
You people are easily pleased
yup
Boring Emperor's New Clothes ironic enthusiasm.
People telling other people they're enjoying music the wrong way is definitely my favourite thing about DiS
I genuinely enjoy this guy's demo
down with this kind of cynicism.
It's his innocence and self-belief that makes it.
^this
amazing!
Ryan, I think you've got what it takes to go really far in this competition...
...in fact, you remind me of a little Sam Cooke.
genuinely love this
this guy is seriously the epitome of punk. seriously, genuinely impressed
it kind of makes me sad that people are making fun of him
At least, h'es getting more comments than my soundcloud page
lol...
Or...at least, his soundcloud page is getting more comments than mine
He doesn't even know about the Soundcloud page...
yet. As he didn't supply an email address I've sent him a postcard telling him about it.
Can't say you did any good :)
I tried to help him
I hope he appreciates my efforts! :-)
This thread must never, ever be allowed to die
Radiohead
I prefer Ryan
cantaffordtobreathinthistownnowheretositwithoutaguninmyhandlookbackuptothecathoderayimbetteroffdead
Let's start a sweestake
on exactly what time today the Soundcloud will reach 3,000 listens
6pm and it's up to 2834!
Nearly 9pm and still not quite up to 3,000 yet... :-(
over 4000 now though
the kid goes hard.
respek.
this has to be the
most punk thing I think I've ever heard.
Big ups to the british columbia krew
Am I the only person to think that he sounds like Kermit The Frog?
Admittedly Kermit on a huge bender
I don't get it...
Ryan should make a spokenword solo album!
Punk (cover) bands are everywhere. But noone sings like this.
It might come out on vinyl
A music journalist has offered to write sleeve notes for it.
This is turning into a joke gone too far.
If it all becomes INTERNET it's in danger of degenerating into a joke/shit meme.
But if someone fronts up the cash to press physical copies up, and the guy gets a fair wedge, and it's done in a straight-up way, rather than a daft and crass way, then the guy has pretty much found his way into the scenario he was looking to get to, so good luck to him.
how about a kickstarter?
surprised not to hear the words
"christ's chin" and "two headed sex beast" pop up in the fourth song to be honest
Is some of this a bit autotuned?
I've only made it to the second track but some of the first track had a bit of that wireyness of autotune, am i mad?
Just had another listen.
Was gonna just re-check out my faves, but got drawn into just listening to it straight, without skipping.
Whatever the reason or circumstance, there's an undeniably single-minded thing going on that makes it compelling. Definitely not just a wailing loon. It's the aural manifestation of someone in love with music.
I keep coming back to the "I only had a one minute recorder on my computer so I sang fast." thing. It's the kind of thing that you'd expect from Aphex (or the Beatles, or whoever) in 1989 (or 1968, or whenever).
RESTRICTIONS (THAT CAUSE ENFORCED CONCEPTS) 4 THE WIN.
I have just wasted five minutes of my life listening to this
And that's five minutes I will never get back. I should charge you for my time. Roflol.
Does that mean you don't want to buy the CD?
Incredible
Can't say I've ever heard anything quite like it.
this kid is a fucking hero
Tn
I have no idea what happened there
What I was trying to write was: "this thread must not be allowed to die".
Here's the rest of the band:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THXCi3H3NzM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaOulFOWtbY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EqBlHyBZtQ
Genius!
If only they could all be brought together in real life...
I'm disappointed
It's been listened to around 4,500 times now but so far only one re-mix. Surely someone can put some proper instruments behind him?
annoyed that anyone would suspect us of liking this ironically
also gets me down that anyone would like it ironically.
this guy is amazing. I could seriously listen to this demo over and over again. punk as fuck.
^knows
I sent him a letter
That was a week and a half ago. He's not replied... Yet.
I'm really enjoying this...
it sounds like the sort of thing I would make. If you were to release this, does that just mean you'd be asking people to pay for a download of it? or actually putting it in... record shops.
It's been suggested that I put it on vinyl
The plot thickens...
..he sent the exact note/CD to a record store in the U.S. and it found its way to Brian Turner on WFMU... http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/44460 - 1 hour in.
BUT i will never stop suspecting everyone of liking it ironically! :D
Ryan has emailed me!
"Hello PJ. My name is Ryan. I sent cds of me singing in the mail. I got a postcard from you. Thank you for sending me a postcard. Please email me."
Now I guess I'd better figure out what I'm going to do with him!
He also says....
Cool. Wow. Thank you. I checked out the Soundcloud. Thanks!
It has over 5k plays!
What's occurring?
Good news ^_^
Now what?
27.
The most rock and roll number of them all. Apt. Hope it isn't a bad omen.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4357086#r6852121
I wonder what Ryan thinks of the new Offspring record.
