New Sleigh Bells is really good. I like them. They're fresh.
The Anorexic Olsen Twin album is available to d/l from his website and is basically really great upbeat folk songs about e.g. killing zombies to meet a girl you fancy and being sad etc. Really good.
Nite Jewel is basically my favourite album at the moment I think, it's just really good transcendent underground pop music. With this and Ekstasis [that I haven't heard yet but I'm assuming is incredible] the LA scene is crushing 2k12 so far. All we need now is Geneva Jacuzzi and Gary War to release some records.
Finally checked out the YACHT album from last year which I missed out on somehow despite loving both the previous ones. It's really good! Apart from the one that has a dubstep bit in it. The last song is one of my favourites by them. Going to go see them in May and p. excited as they're consistently massive fun live.
New Belbury Poly 'The Belbury Tales' is my first time listening to him/them and apparently some people are saying it's a bit average or he's a sell out for using instruments or something, I don't really care about all that because it's really good. I think this year is going to be when I really get under the skin of all this Ghost Box stuff.
The Tshetsha Boys plays are all from a CD-R of theres I bought from Boomkat last year but didn't get around to listen to. As really good as everything else on this list.
but yeah, go, they're so much fun. i've not seen them since they got the backing band. actually, thinking about it, i've not seen them since before See Mystery Lights came out :(

1 – New album is utterly beautiful. Trying to define it into further words would be like pinning a butterfly to a cork board.
3 – Final album from 'Yorba Zergot''s Fauxmusica guise, before moving on to a a project with the Peach Tree called Sacred Star. Witch House as it was always meant to be – challenging, cryptic, subversive, uncompromising, unlistenable.
4 – New self-released ep from these upcoming garage rockers. More streamlined and cleaner than their last one, but still hairy and full-speed.
5 – see 3, but double its potency for the two-headed beast it is.
8 – Really not as good as Sean's review had me believe, which is a shame because I was with him all the way on his Blondes one. It's just too insubstantial. Indie disco shoegaze that's fighty and weightless instead of involving and ethereal.
10 – First new material in years from these guys who I played a lot in the early days of doing NFR. They've been working with One Unique Signal's Byron to get a sound similarly Telescopic to theirs, which is a very good thing.

Flipper were all about being in your face. As you said, for Flipper it wasn't so much about the quality of the performance but instead about the viscerality of it. And there comes a point with age when you just can't do that anymore: as some people have said of Iggy. You don't go to hear the songs as much as you go to see the performance.
you still got the sort of nihilistic feeling from the reformed Flipper last time, I think it's sort of different to the Iggy thing (still think he's got it myself!). It seemed like Flipper were trying a different thing to the other punk bands at the time that were more standard 'in your face'
In an attempt to appeal to mugx3's appeal for discourse on these boards, some CONTROVERSIAL OPINIONS.
Explaining the appeal of The Caretaker - This one is really difficult, because after listening to him quite a lot this week, it's hard to pin your finger on what's actually so good about him. How can some dude playing old-styley records with a load of tape hiss actually be an appealing prospect? I mean, it's something you could do yourself, surely? Maybe it's the name which makes it worthwhile, this idea of an eternal archivist watching over your listening habits. Anyway, there is something resolutely appealing about The Caretaker. Just tell me what it is.
The Lindstrom Conundrum, or Why You Shouldn't Mess With A Formula - I listened to the new and ridiculously titled Lindstrom record this week and I was immediately met with an awful sinking feeling. Those. Vocals. What was he thinking? Just terrible. This begs the question: at what point should you mess with the formula? Because obviously being a static entity in music isn't entirely a good thing and can only be maintained for so long (see Wooden Shjips, as much as I love 'em). What is it that makes us value familiarity and at other times dismiss it? For me, the problem with the Lindstrom record is that the departure doesn't feel in sync with his general idea: those vocals reduce the music to a background rather than being actually built into the tracks. Thoughts?
2) The new double album - just got around to buying it. I think I like it more than Dragging a Dead Deer (SHOCK STATEMENT) which always felt really front loaded to me. I like the longer tracks and the fact that at the same time it feels far more melodic. Also, there's a difference in tone between the two discs. Which is nice and makes them feel like standalone records and thus better value.
4) Why didn't I listen to this before? Mutant bass muzik with a nice line in the more highbrow r & b around today.
6)b) Can't wait for RIP. Been listening to the EPs he released since Splazsh. Rainy Dub does sound a bit like Under Mi Sleng Teng if you make your ears squint a bit.
8) b) NEW ALBUM OUT SOON YEAH. I'm hoping he continues to get progressively more weird and jazzy. Seems like the natural progression for him albumwise.
and you're absolutely right. The vocal samples are what ruin it. I'm not sure if it's the change in direction that's to blame, but rather just a weakening of his quality control. It's patently clear to anyone listening that the vocal samples are weak, so the fact that he's not picked up on that just says more about his state of mind as a musician.. i read that he treats making music as a job, pulling a 9-5 Monday to Friday in the studio, which is.. worrying. Maybe he needs to step aside from it for a bit
the power of The Caretaker all comes from recontextualisation. He's taking music that inhabited one very specific time and place, putting it in a new frame, and completely changing the emphasis. It's the distance from the original source that brings the power, and it's that distance that makes it sound so wistful, and haunting. I also think the method behind it picks up on one of the things i love most in music. That simplicity, and limiting of boundaries, and singular vision. A friend of mine once said of a bit of electronic music 'why bother with this.. i could make it one my computer in 10 minutes'.. it's the final artefact that matters, not the method
Everything is an edit of the past anyway. To clear something up around here for those who think I play nothing, maybe check out some of my coposed works under my own name. If people don't like something it's cool. To say I don't play anything is wide of the mark and shows ignorance on the part of those who make such comments these albums are sample based, others are not. Always I strive for emotions and the last caretaker album is based around emotions equal part to the sample material used. If you listen to those albums as a whole then it's not the same impact or experience. Don't let the facts however get the away of a critical mauling.

1 this LP sags pretty badly in the middle, and the production isn't great, but there's a few cracking tracks on there. Am i allowed to like indie pop? I know you're all very disappointed in me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIfxIKg_0Z0 3 second half of the record is awesome. Gets me pretty euphoric. The final track is a stunna too, Stott-esque minimalist bass throb
8 like a lot of FACT approved indie/rock, this sounds cool but you have to ask.. is there any substance to it. If i was listening to a techno record and liked the sound of it, then to me that is a good record. But if you listen to a band and like the sound, but the songs aren't there, then do the same criteria apply? I do enjoy listening to this LP, but couldn't tell you much about it, except that they have somehow reanimated the soul of Peter Hook
9 now that's a triple whammy of some heavy guitar tones
i think the vocals are problematic.. will give it a few more listens to see if i change my mind tho
that PP LP is pretty much the worst sounding record ever, but it's just too badass to ignore. If it had a decent production job i would listen to little else, guess i have to be in the mood to blast it out
but its def not as strong as that Elder record in that regard. I think its female vocals(?) and I like that their kind of lesser in the mix. Violins add a nice mournful edge to the whole project.
Desertshore album is lovely, think Mark Kozelek is a lot better with a band than without
When Saints Go Machine have really slipped under the radar undeservedly. Arthur Russell style vocals and catchy, interesting pop music that feels at home in these dance orientated times

1. new mixtape is pretty good but 26 tracks is like a triple albums worth of material, when will rappers every realize the power of editing and quality control.
Well, I still listen to way too many anyway, but its daunting for a die hard like me, cant imagine how annoying it is for a fringe fan. Hard to complain about free music and all and I get that its hard to resist just throwing it all out there, but the rockist in me yearns for well constructed and perfectly paced 35-45 minute full lengths.

3 i love it when you hear a really beautiful and simple idea through the huge flurry of notes or when the bassist changes it up and the melody is revealed through a different harmony, it's like the sun coming out. special shit.
4 if i was a carpenter
5 is core to the brave just him or a collaboration? it's all distorted bass and skittery drum loops, not really played my way into it properly dunno if it's as good as i think it is. maximum volume yields maximum etc.
6 i was reading the lyric booklet and it's all about globalisation and whatnot. wish i took french at school, someone who speaks french listen to her and tell me what's going on. also les perdantes sounds exactly like the fairy fountain music from ocarina of time! cool.

2 think he's probably at his peak these days. realised he's probably in my top 5 ever artists.
4b one of two listeners of this on last.fm. the sufjan stevens / serengeti / son lux ep. not bad, kinda exactly how you'd expect it sound. one track sounds a bit like hot chip

*flighty
not 'fighty and weightless' - that changes everything.
Thanks on the update with Fauxmusica
I'll be checking this all out!

3 The Books 16 "The Way Out" IS as good as the other albums. Now I get it.
4 Brainbombs 8 This band make me feel very happy indeed. Despite how wrong the lyrics are and how blown out everything sounds AND the fact that every song only has one riff bludgeoned to death for three minutes every time.
4 The Intelligence 8 "Fake Surfers" is such a good album. Have played it unscrobbled 2 death this week.

9 John Clyde-Evans 4 weird music/sound juxtaposition which just barely hangs together wrt structure and harmony. Lots of high pitched sounds that people might hate but I quite like. Haven't heard anything quite like it (this is the Apetal Thunderfall cd)

I don't know if I want to go and see Flipper
It's that whole old man punk band thing where you're not really sure if they can pull it off or not.
well they were a bit ropey last time!
But it doesn't seem like they were ever very well practiced first time round. That's their thing a bit?
It's more the Iggy Pop argument I'm getting at
Flipper were all about being in your face. As you said, for Flipper it wasn't so much about the quality of the performance but instead about the viscerality of it. And there comes a point with age when you just can't do that anymore: as some people have said of Iggy. You don't go to hear the songs as much as you go to see the performance.
wheyy
you still got the sort of nihilistic feeling from the reformed Flipper last time, I think it's sort of different to the Iggy thing (still think he's got it myself!). It seemed like Flipper were trying a different thing to the other punk bands at the time that were more standard 'in your face'
I think this all comes from seeing Negative Approach once and being disappointed at how boring and middle aged they all looked
Going through the motions.
:(
I really enjoyed them. They still had it c.2006!

Thoughts?
aaaaand some comments
Seems like the natural progression for him albumwise.
firstly, that new Lindstrom album is a real stinker
and you're absolutely right.
Agreed w/ the Caretaker stuff. Was reading The Caretaker defending himself in his last.fm shoutbox the other day
Everything is an edit of the past anyway. Don't let the facts however get the away of a critical mauling.
that was copied from his last.fm shout
forgot we can't do speech marks no mo.

1 this LP sags pretty badly in the middle, and the production isn't great, but there's a few cracking tracks on there. Am i allowed to like indie pop? I know you're all very disappointed in me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIfxIKg_0Z0
3 second half of the record is awesome.

What you think of that Subrosa?
Surprised you like that Psychic Paramount with how poor it sounds and all.
not sure that i like it tbh
i think the vocals are problematic.. will give it a few more listens to see if i change my mind tho
that PP LP is pretty much the worst sounding record ever, but it's just too badass to ignore. If it had a decent production job i would listen to little else, guess i have to be in the mood to blast it out
I like the mood of Subrosa, vocals dont bother me
but its def not as strong as that Elder record in that regard. I think its female vocals(?) and I like that their kind of lesser in the mix. Violins add a nice mournful edge to the whole project.
rly like that subrosa record
but i did have to delete the folk song one. that's gash.

1. new mixtape is pretty good but 26 tracks is like a triple albums worth of material, when will rappers every realize the power of editing and quality control.
9c. Elder album Dead Roots Stirring is so great, just endless riffage and sludge

would listen to so many more mixtapes if they weren't all about 2 hours long atm
No doubt.

1 in two sittings. sore neck.
2 great southern darkness is a winner. that's how to produce a heavy record.
6 i was reading the lyric booklet and it's all about globalisation and whatnot. wish i took french at school, someone who speaks french listen to her and tell me what's going on. also les perdantes sounds exactly like the fairy fountain music from ocarina of time! cool.

had a good look & i can't find anything off of that solo(?) record (mute massaker) on the internet :(
if you can dl it from somewhere then 5:30 into cheyenne and 7 minutes or so into indians are good examples. there's a lot of them though.
the stuff he does as caspar brotzmann massaker is generally a lot more violent, still fucking ace mind... this is the closest to that record i could find... there are some bits about 7 minutes into this that i dig big.

defo see if you can find mute massaker anywhere.
