Dislocated Souls
Soul singers are the worst type of singers
Fucking Joss Stone soundalike awful shite
Aretha Franklin is a soul singer.
Oh no, Cronin
this is a bad answer, you should retract that last statement.
Totally
she sounds more Mexican to me.
Everyone should read this:
http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2004/11/everything-they-say-about-soul-is-wrong/
a good read
Thanks for this!
Nah
So do you think that you have to be black or sound black to be a soul singer?
Great article that
and one of my favourite songs too. Warblers like Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston have perverted most people's understanding of what "soul" is - people seem to think it means singing as loudly as possible, gurning like you're being fucked from behind by a gorilla, & dragging words out into as many syllables as possible ("LuuuUUUhhUUUHHHuuuuUUUHHHvvvvvvvE" etc). It's not.
I don't hear any "soul" in what Adele does, it's just whingeing post-hen night comedown music.
As Peter Cook put it
"Erm, I think it can be truly said that the Americans have, er, their soul singers, and we English have our soul singers." Works better if you say it out loud.
She reminds me
of Dusty Springfield, and I've never been a fan of hers.
you are insane.
Haha
because I don't like Dusty Springfield?
because I think Adele reminds me of her?
because I'm just insane?
because
I dont' find her all clarity and charm.
Where you see clarity, I see lack of depth.
Where you see charm, I see pretend.
Ok, she doesn't not belt them like Adele. Agreed on that point
but, I'm just waiting for Adele to come up with a Dusty cover.
That would not surprise me.
My comment btw was relating to the fact that I think both of them see/saw themselves as soul singers, but imo, there's nothing 'soul' about them.
:) the first two, yeah
dusty is wonderful and i don't think you need to be a massive fan to get that ( have like 2 best ofs or something, nowhere near approaching everything).
and adele has nothing in common with her... adele has a powerful voice but no nuances (ok not a bad as florence for monotony but on the same spectrum), dusty has so much heart and such deep comprehension of her material...
I'm sure
Dusty was a wonderful human being - no question about that.
I 've never got the impression of 'so much heart and deep comprehension' when listening to her.
I'm not one to stay too long on my impressions. If you and Cronin disagrees, I'll have another listen. :)
Adele is to Dusty
what Tom Jones is to Scott Walker.
