and not rihanna? or gaga? or perry? Pretentious bellends!
if 10% of the artists you love aren't fully brown your lefty status is at risk.
see the Pitchfork end of year lists.
positive discrimination is par for the course in indie circles, sadly.
I thought we were past this kind of nonsense.
It's cool for anyone to like Rihanna, mostly because What's My Name is possibly the greatest song ever written.
and tbh there's probs more love for gaga on here than any of the other named artists.
indie bellends ARE allowed to like gaga. rewrite this shit bro
If you gonna troll, at least get the facts right. Lack of good trolling is killing dis.
despite, just like their somehow less credible contemporaries, not writing any of their own songs. People act as though Will Young is like a proper artist and should be taken seriously just cos he started singing ballads. He's no different to Justin Bieber.
that probably just means he came up with one lyric per song (lol trying to recover from the sudden realization that I chose the worst example ever)
even though her songs were mostly written by other writers, because she was a good performer. same with beyonce (not literally comparing the two, but a relevant comparison can be drawn for this point) you don't last at the level she's at with good songs alone.
JB is more of a concept, he's completely packaged in whatever way makes the most money for the predetermined demographic. that isn't why i don't like him though, i think his songs are shit. but that is why he doesn't get indie fans like beyonce does - because there's no room for him to bring anything fresh to the table (you may scoff but who knows)
All popstars are.
all musicians and singers are subject to types of marketing, that's the entertainment business.
Will Young: has a pretty cracking voice.
See also: Lemar.
Do not see also: Justin Bieber.
Justin Bieber: a bit rubbish innit.
Also: Justin Bieber hasn't had a Bo Selecta character, which is what really matters.
I'm not sure you should be posting in a music forum.
But, in time, you'll get learn to accept both of those things, and that Mr Young can holler.
who else can holler
Your mum not only can, but does.
because that's a completely ridiculous concept.
on the better end of mediocre mainstream pop. Honestly, I'd rather listen to shit indie, because at least there's the chance the next song will be exciting and great.
*says the guy who's just put Who's Gonna Ride Your Horses on repeat*
doesn't that have something to do with "independant" thinking? Or do you have to belong to the "indie army", where you all wear the indie uniform of black frame glasses & skinny jeans & stupid sneakers & ironic t-shirts & knit caps, and everyone listens to Radiohead and Sleigh Bells? Like who you want, even if that artist sucks, which I think Beyonce does.
Gaga's message (aka image) really nice too, putting in context with other mainstream artists, which give her a lot of merits and respect
i don't know what i'm talking about
was when the entireity of blogland developed a deep seated passion for Kelly Clarkson's screechy Since U Been Gone because it had a choppy guitar on it. "It sounds like Interpol and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs!" they chorused, knowing full well that if the next Interpol or Yeah Yeah Yeahs single sounded like that they'd come down on it with no mercy.
but it sounds nothing like Interpol or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
To my mind, anyway.
Besides which, the best Kelly Clarkson song is 'My Life Would Suck Without You' and I'm really struggling to see much of Interpol or Yeah Yeah Yeahs in that.
Gaga and Rhianna are pop titans, Beyonce is generally excellent and even Katy Perry (despite being utter crap a lot of the time) comes out with a corker every album. I Kissed a Girl and Teenage Dream are wonderful pop songs.
Music is Music...an' all that!
I like Rihanna though.
And she's fucking fine.
It's also cool for Indie Nerds to like the new Paris Hilton single, it's quite Avante-Garde, the type of thing you would expect Vogue-era Madonna to create if that version of her was transported into the present.
people cant just like something because they think its good
what will those bloody hipsters get up to next!!!
Even just for a day.............
In the last couple of years basically what has happened is that authentic emotional response has taken precendent over authentic critical response.
With blogs and all that shit these days, there are no more critical authorities: pretty much everything has been deconstructed and reappropriated in every conceivable manner in various formats.
Thats not to say that the golden years of print media and hometaping and all that crap was like an elightenment style era of popular music criticism. However, what distinguished good taste from bad was the critical approach taken.
When cds and ipods and the digitisation of music and all that started out, it shifted towards authentic consumption: good taste was sorted from bad by how you sourced and consumed your music. This continues a bit as we can see with latterly people going on about how they only buy vinyl, actually, and more recently the resurgence of bringing stuff out on tapes and all that.
Right now, its all about authentic emotional response which, of course, is not really "authentic". Look at zane lowe's show: championning 'new music' and obsessing about all that is always centred around the hyperbolic language of "open minded" enthusiasm about everything, to not be enthusiastic about or at least accepting of almost everything released in any genre is to be a snob and have deviant taste. Naturally, having an inauthentic emotional response is always framed as having an inauthentic critical eye. Look at people being shot down in this thread for suggesting that beyonce resists being consumed in the same way as the fall. Basically, indie music is in crisis.
This post on hipster runoff sums it up better than I can: http://www.hipsterrunoff.com/2012/01/lana-me-our-dark-abusive-co-dependent-relationship-content-farm-carles.html
and this prophetic post on popular website drownedinsound by erstwhile popular user and latterly troubled teen "yes_" shows that this genius was ahead of the curve: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/2530691
I was overwhelmed by one thought; Smash Hits was ploughing exactly this line of knowing, self-aware celeb fawning/mockery of the pop star/media symbiosis at least 20 years ago. It was as plain as day, to even my naive tween self, that there need not be any angst over having an authentic response, of any kind, to any music. It's almost as if what you like reading, and what you like listening to don't have to be intrinsically linked. The intertrons didn't have to exist for that to be the case.
In other words, I was consciously into having no credibility or authenticity way before it was cool to consciously not have any credibility or authenticity. Which, of course, was always done with all the studied and calculated zeal of any true cultural fascist. And, as Carles has come to realise, if you haven't had an existential crisis about it, you're probably not doing it right.
Didn't even realise LDR was even supposed to have even a smidge of 'indie' in her until someone linked to HR on here the other week. Until then, she'd just been someone with a mildly memorable song on heavy rotation in the background on Radio 2 at work. All mention of her being anything other than A N Other singer is as baffling as it would be if there was some big reveal about Justin Bieber not being dubstep.
since the Lana del Report and Carles' 'breakdown' thing. So fucking good. It's like a crazy indie internet soap opera
is not to spend too much time worrying about what is or isn't 'cool' let alone what other people, who you obviously don't respect, think is 'cool'.
You just like what you like. Beyonce has some good songs, Lady Gaga has some good songs, Rihanna has some awesome songs. They all also have shit songs...
I find her quite contradictory in what she preaches and what she practices. Sometimes even what she preaches and what she preaches.
I'm not sure.
Fuck the fuck off
