best since Born In The USA
can't say I've been amazed by it though
but really really enjoying it. Also despite loving everything up to and including born in the USA, me saying "best since" means better than tom joad/devils & dust as i can take or leave most other stuff.
Not a huge fan of The Rising, but the general critical consensus/feeling toward that could easily be applied to my opinion of the new one, or the way people talk about Dylan's late career highlights. Couple of not great / forgettable ones, but nothing that's actually bad (or awful in the case of at least 1 or 2 songs on every springsteen album for ages) - and pulls off a few things that should be terrible (though i'm fully expecting at least a few slaggings of the rap, etc)
Best 'big'/epic e streety ones in absolutely ages (last two, the single, the title track), the ones that sound really seeger sessions are more enjoyable than anything on there, etc.
But it's amusing to hear 'e streety' because the rest of the band is hardly on the album!
Still, chances are he'll only do three or four on tour so it's not the end of the world if it's shite.
Tunnel of Love is so under-rated.
I fucking love it! great album, and I'd say his best since Born in the USA
I thought, BUT TUNNEL OF LOVE IS BETTER!
Anyway, I've listened to Wrecking Ball leak a few times now and it's great. The one track I can't stop playing over and over though is Death to my Hometown. Total club banger hah.
What the fuck is that all about? surely this can't be the same Boss who made Nebraska?
I'm all for something different but a shite religious rap about jesus?
Rocky Ground is shite. It seems to be getting a lot of love from critics though. This album is good but it's only sort of 3 stars good.
and not even that bad. better than outlaw pete or queen of the supermarket or spare parts or reno
(as an aside, i've revisited tunnel of love a lot this week because of the thread and it's really not that great. discovered that Valentine's Day is brilliant, and Brilliant Disguise is obviously great, but aside from a couple of other songs everything's either forgettable or just pretty bad)
Might attempt to piece together a decent soft-rock album from Lucky Town/Tunnel of Love/Human Touch
Quite good. Wrecking Ball is an obvious highlight. I'm not too sure about his tendency towards Irish folk music. Is the penny whistle necessary?
and my feeling is there's some great ideas hidden behind a wall of over production and way too many gimmicks. I was expecting angry rock n roll and instead we've a got music that my Gran would like. Big let down.
These Jimmy Fallon versions hint to what might have been if he'd gone with the bombast of the E-Street rather than the lame celtic, wanna be coldplay sound that's on the album.
Imagine it. IMAGINE IT.
PEOPLE GET READY
YOU DONT NEED NO TICKET
In honour of the man himself and his new album, I asked a bunch of people (Simone Felice, Maps & Atlases, Still Corners, Katie Malco, Jesse Malin et al.)to write about their favorite Springsteen track.
It's a good read for Springsteen geeks...
Atlantic City is my favourite Bruce song as well. Possibly my favourite song full stop.
glad you liked it. cheers for taking the time to give it a read. I adore that song too, it was nice to see it get some love!
Atlantic city is amazing. Really enjoy Youngstown too!
album has grown on me MASSIVELY today. Been playing it tons.
But Magic from 2007 is way, way better, maybe his 3rd or 4th best album. Need to listen to the new one more, admittedly
Definitely better than Magic or Working on a Dream. I agree though that some of the songs are very over-produced, especially in the second half. Compare Land of Hope and Dreams here to the version on the 2000 Live in New York album, and it's clear that the latter is much better, as is the live version of American Land from the Seeger Sessions.
I think these songs will be awesome live though. Tracks like Shackled and Drawn and Death to My Home Town will be raucous sing-alongs. I can't wait for the summer!
but the production and arrangements make it totally unlistenable. bad bruce.
Death to my Hometown really puts a spring in my step.
without thinking of the Life of Riley by the Lightning Seeds. Anyone else get it?
