How healthy is the British music scene right now?
Brits, NME awards and Adele's record sales aside, what do you think of the current state of music on these isles at the moment?
I started throwing together a playlist (with a little bit of help from Facebook) and it's starting to make for an interesting snapshot of what's doing on right now. What's missing from the below tracklisting?
I guess what I'm also asking is: What's exciting you about music from the UK at the moment? Is there anything UK's doing that other countries aren't or possibly never would? Are we terrible at celebrating our own succeses and realising what's on our doorstep? Do you think some new British acts aren't given the time to develop without some weird rational that they've missed their 'moment' if they don't release an amazing debut album within six months of being written about EVERYWHERE? Is there still a slight grass-is-greener transatlantic awe for Americans, Canadians, Aussies, Scandis, etc...? (kinda want this to be a positive thread but am sure negativity about some bad pop and terrible rock is inevitable and isn't discouraged)

Kate Bush
PJ Harvey
The Horrors
Adele
what's going* on
Little Dragon removed because they're Swedes
*long day fail*
also removed Aloe Blacc
due to him being American, and that (shoulda double-checked all of these suggestions as they came in)
I think Teeth are American too right?
Lots of lovely inclusions there
Particularly impressed by the acknowledgement of Blanck Mass, Errors and Forest Swords there. But I think to exclude Pulled Apart By Horses, who for my money have made the most exciting British rock record for quite some time this year, is criminal. How you've managed to include Emmy The Great and The Kills (are we classing them as British?) and not them is beyond me.
Kong + FOTL too
Plus BATS, though they may be Irish...
Kong & FOTL are both fantastic. I haven't heard BATS but they sound like they're worth the dig so I'll check them out.
BATS are awesome
but I think they're Irish. There's a host of great bands on Richter Collective too.
BATS released the best album of 2010.
'Red In Tooth and Claw' - GET ON THAT.
Well according to Wiki Emmy the Great has an English father and has lived in the UK since she was 12
so I think her inclusion on this list is fair enough!
Yeah I know
I was asking whether or not you could class The Kills as a wholly British band. Sure one member is British, but Alison Mossheart is American. Also I don't like The Kills, and the Emmy The Great comment was simply because I don't like her, so I was just putting my opinion forward, not questioning her nationality.
oh riiiight, fair enough
and yeah, Emmy the Great is truly awful. So are The Kills though.
it was just a start (I spent all of 40mins compiling it), PABH just been added
Kills have lived here for a decade, and I wasn't being particularly pernickety about HOW British someone was...
Haha, grass-is-greener transatlantic awe
sums up the attitude of SO many indier than thou Pitchfork obsessed snobs I know (I love Pitchfork like, I just mean people who mainly like the traditional Pitchfork indie bands)
There's loads of good stuff in the UK at the moment, no real "scene" that the NME or whatever can pick up on, but it's all the better for it, I think. Loads of variety in a really small country, and a nice mix of new and established artists, bedroom projects and proper bands.
i think the lack of any sort of umbrella 'scene' is a good thing too
means things aren't burning too bright but also means they're not burning out really quick!
I rarely look at Pitchfork and have no awe for the US,
just that American and Canadian bands have time to develop by touring and don't have to release an amazing debut album and rely on initial hype like over here. Nearly everything I buy now is American and not by choice, they are just better, more interesting bands. I'm not interested in dance stuff anymore, been there done that (showing my age). Still Corners and Lanterns On The Lake are really good new bands mind.
Perhaps you see american bands as superio
Because Lanterns on the Lake are one of your favourite new Uk acts
It's fine in my book
It doesn't have many high profile slightly alternative acts right now but we're doing plenty of interesting things.
Scotland in particular is doing some great stuff. Phantom Band, Moffat and Wells, RM Hubbert, De rosa, Emma Pollock, Admiral Fallow, loch Lomond, Alasdair Roberts, Malcolm Middleton, Mogwai...
aren't Loch Lomond actually American?
But on a Scot label http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loch_Lomond_(band)
#massivepedant
I didn't realise that!
Just presumed that with that name...
you seriously think a Scottish band
would name themselves Loch Lomond?!?!
Isn't dance mainly what we're good at recently
yeah we're really good at dance
no

Agreed with the point above that there isn't a clear scene (in 'indie' circles at least) in the UK. Hasn't been one for a few years tbh. I think that perhaps damages the exposure that some deserving acts would get were there a scene built around their sound. But more importantly there's a diversity in the UK at the moment which makes for exciting style exchanges etc. I'd definitely take this state of play over a second New Rock Revolution.
Your list also needs some Jamie Woon, Golden Fable, Standard Fare, Vessels, Matt Elliott and Portico Quartet.
I think there's some terrific British stuff out there at the moment. Some of my favourites from the past year or so:

The Caretaker / Leyland Kirby
Demdike Stare
Gnod
Still Corners
Anna Calvi
James Blackshaw
The Haxan Cloak
Still Corners are really good
but why have they barely had any recognition? I saw them week before last in a tiny, shit venue in Brighton and they were great but loads of people talked all the way through and weirdly left half way through their set. Just don't get the uk scene at the moment. Yeah lots of dance stuff but tbh did dance in the early 90s (yeah I'm old) and not interested any more. Nearly everything I buy now is American / Canadian etc. Bands here just don't get a chance to develop any more. Blame the internet, the amazing first album syndrome, fuck knows. Would a band as good as say Deerhunter get a chance over here. In the US bands can make a living touring and develop over time. Doesn't often happen here anymore...shame.
we've given Still Corners a fair bit of love on DiS
but it doesn't seem to have had a knock on effect. Great to see them mentioned in this thread.
Yeah pretty good album
Let down by the fact that it sounds like a 1950s Frankenstein soundtrack (circling in particular).
Would be in a better state if DiS didn't publish really awfully written 0/10 reviews of such luminaries of the british music scene as Cast
then delete comments left by their PR guy revealing that he wasn't going to send DiS a copy anyway as he knew they wouldn't be into that sort of thing, but that the reviewer asked for a review link and pretended to be interested in it.
Also ripping off stewart lee jokes.
Also being derogatory about the scottish rugby team
Also boasting about not writing anything about kurt cobains 45th birthday.
FYI... the PR deleted the comment himself
as it revealed personal contact details.
and also, the reviewer and the PR have exchanged emails, and I spoke to Dan (reviewer) before the review went up, as he was disappointed by the album and wasn't sure if it was even worth doing a 'review', etc, etc...
keep fighting the fight...
(laugh)
You're a bit of a shut in aren't you?
Cast ffs
you're joking aren't you?
good playlist
Remember Remember's worth a mention.
Andrew Chalk's collobaration w/ Timo Van Luyk as Elodie.
You may enjoy sean, since you I remember you enjoyed Richard Skelton so much.
The Caretaker's S/T to Patience (After Sebald) is good.
Haven't had much of a chance to listen, but Trim mixtape seemed nice.
Patrice & Friends / Modern love crew / Hype Williams crew...
...in other words there's always good stuff bubbling away under a heap of rubbish (esp. in grime/dance music & sometimes drone)... but there's (obv.) no such thing as a 'British Music Scene'
but yeh, people (organisations/websites etc.) should pay more attention to grime & uk funky if they want to make people think diverse/good British music exists.
^
espesh if you like your pop, some of my favourite 'pop' tracks of recent years have come from the UK Funky/Grime scenes. But you know they aint pop cos they aint popular haha.

Way more fun than the US version of dubstep/electro you hear all over radio one at the mo.
^ missing some serious Islet and Zun Zun Egui
do people like Islet?
They were one of the worst bands I've ever seen live. But then that was several years ago, I guess some bands do get better...
Er, I have only heard the record
but in contrast I thought people LOVED them live. If I'm wrong hopefully people will put me straight now. Or maybe you have the wrong band?
Yeah, I did not like them live - seemed like drama students desperate for attention.
Still it's just not my thing at all, and it's too easy to be negative.
so...er..... as you were
That sounds like hell
Good Lp though...strangely I wouldn be suprised if people had a similar reaction to Zun Zun Egui live, but when I saw them there was something very genuine about it all, so I thought they were wicked.
The records fantastic
And they were fantastic when I saw them live.
I was surprised by Stephen Merritt saying in the interview that he thought UK pop was better than the US version. I'd vehemently say the opposite. Fuck awful over-produced MOR retro bollocks, what I want is people shouting over samples ffs!

I also agree with Breton very much so. Really great band.

Trophy Wife
Jessie Ware
I genuinely love so many bands coming out of Britain currently, its formlessness is exciting I tihnk personally.
Yeah, Breton are one of the most exciting bands in ages
But also Arthur Beatrice, Toy and Clock Opera are worth including
Clock Opera frustrate me.
I love them musically, but his voice is just so frail, and in a Chris Martin way, not a good way. It's the only thing wrong with 'Belongings'.
fwiw, I like Breton, but wouldn't have pegged them anywhere close to 'most exciting new band in ages'.
Why do people think Breton are good??
They sound pretty much exactly like that taught indie dance stuff that was all too popular circa 2005
^
Its not really a style I'm wanting to come back anytime soon. Its the saturation of that kind of thing that put UK indie under half a decade ago and it hasn't really recovered since bar the odd exception that prooves the rule.
I certainly think they share something with that group of artists you mention, which is hardly endearing.
But I think they've sought to be a bit more adventurous with their more recent output and incorporated elements of hip hop, which is altogether less obnoxious, if not quite as subtle as perhaps it could be:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QgCDRctSGg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYuxZ2otU8s
Not your cup of tea, perhaps, but I don't think it'll inspire a new wave of soundalikes to bumrush the scene. In any case, they've only released a few EPs, which, in their varying quality, suggest they're still trying to settle on a sound with which they're comfortable.
all we need is...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaFj7OXXG7g
again
From indie disco to big beat indie disco.
Everything seems a bit fragmented at the moment, feels like the lull before something new goes mental
That's healthy in terms of bands having a bit of breathing space, and it also saves us from what happens when a big scene takes off: a million shitty rip-off bands chancing it whilst things last.
So you don't have a Blur but you also don't have a Catch, and you don't have a The Strokes but you also don't have a Little Man Tate.
The problem is, 'scenes' usually take off and go bananas because of one or more bands who are incredibly good...I'd say that the current lack of any massive crossover scene suggests that there aren't any amazing bands out there at the moment.
The health of the British music scene
always seems to be superficially judged by how many really big bands or artists are out there with critical acclaim who genuinely appeal to both alternative & mainstream audiences and sell records by the bucketload. That hasn't happened for some time. Of the current biggest british acts, Coldplay have mass appeal but have lost much of their initial critical acclaim and alternative fanbase. Radiohead are on the whole loved by the critics and have a sound alternative fanbase, but they also have a number of fans who prefer their Bends era 90s indie rock as opposed to their experimentation of the last decade. You get a sense that an act with mass crossover appeal is what many are waiting for. You only have to look at the line-up of the Olympics closing concert - as much as I love Blur, The Specials & New Order (and will endeavour to get a ticket when they go on sale on Friday), in all fairness this could have been the line-up for a closing concert for Euro 96 (and if that concert was held in 96, not many would have thought to ask the question how healthy is the british music scene as there were acts around back then who tick all of the boxes mentioned). The massive crossover scene thing does not bother me as I know there is plenty of great music being made currently in Britain, it's just many perceive the british music industry to be in poor health unless there are crossover acts around that appeal to both critics and alternative & mainstream audiences alike.
Radiohead.
Let England Shake.

Id' say pretty good, sean
We're going through a bit of a golden period right now
...with an incredibly diverse and vibrant music scene - another 'Cool Britannia' moment, if you like, with lots of exciting new artists like Ed Sheeran and Jessie J coming through all the time and, in Adele, an increasingly iconic figure who symbolises the growing influence of British music on the world stage.
OK, I didn't actually say that -- it's a quote from some HMV rep I copied from the Mirror. But it was just so smarmy and corporate I had to share it.

:(
sorry i'll add some of them in a bit
quite a few suggestions weren't on Spotify and i wasn't aware of those acts so didn't know which songs to pick or where to place them in the running order
You should replace Wildfire with Pharohs
it's much better :)
Critically speaking
5 years ago, America was dominant. I am not merely referring to pitchfork approved music, but if any 'all time great' records were to be released, it seemed unlikely to come from the UK. There was a lull after our indie rock boom, and sadly a few acts started poorly imitating americana (none moreso guilt than Nosh and the whale). So luckily I think there is a mini revival currently, spurred on by the excellent electronic scene and bands like Wild Beasts. There is much to get excited about if bands take cue from the 'Beasts, by focusing on an individual take on pop music, rather than just creating 'indie'.
Really wish they were actually called
Nosh and the whale
a slight grass-is-greener transatlantic awe for Americans, Canadians, Aussies, Scandis, etc...?
I wouldn’t call it awe so much as favour. Speaking as a Canadian, there’s an obvious imperial thread between our countries that causes me to be more disposed to UK music. With that said, UK tunes generally take a different direction and have a different feel. You can hear the difference in the songwriting: the melodies and the chord changes and how they work with one another.
As for the state of British music, Sean’s list features some fantastic artists making progressive music (within the indie paradigm) that sounds, in many cases, like it comes from your part of the world. I’d say that’s as good a sign as any that things are going all right.
Has anyone said British Sea Power yet?
No? Well I just did.

Rock wise I'm pretty bored by British music
We do a decentish line in aggressive noise bands, but they mostly steal moves from US acts. However, in terms of electronic music I think the UK is streets ahead of almost anywhere right now. There such a fertile scene in terms of experimentation, variety and crossover. I especially like how our electronic acts are really getting closer to the noise and more experimental scenes and trying to incorporate that in their sound. In the US it seems like the opposite (100% Silk etc), but I much prefer the former variant.
a lot of empty calories
but I'd still take it over the anemic US scene (settle down, I'm from detroit. it's all dead here nowadays.)
How is Detroit bearing up in general?
Word over here is it could become a ghost town.
it's sad
First off, there are no local radio outlets for new music anymore, so the acts don't come here. One by one, the record shops are closing. A lot of businesses are closing all the metro area. There are so many homes up for sale, and a lot of housing that was started has been abandoned. It's bad all over, I'm sure, but Detroit's just not a happy scene.
I'd suggest maybe adding some of the following tracks:
Munch Munch "Cyclorama"
Hannah Peel "Song of the Sea"
The Veils "Grey Lynn Park"
The Unthanks "Gan to the Kye"
Michachu & The Shapes "Low Dogg"
Wiley "Boom Blast"
Dutch Uncles "Cadenza"
Help Stamp Out Loneliness "Me, Sola & C"
Blood Orange "Champagne Coast"
Zun Zun Egui "Fandango Fresh"
Pychologist "Propeller"
Clock Opera "Belongings"
Gazelle Twin "I am a Shell I am a Bone"
And no Los Campesinos or Johhny Foreigner?
And I would also second Islets
Haven't seen them live but the album deserves some credit.
Also
Emika, Ikonika, Imogen Heape, Corrine Bailey Rae, Joy Formidable, Esben & The Witch, Anna Calvi, The Irrepressables, These New Puritans, Marsha Ambrosius, Bibio, Cat's Eyes, Field Music, Planningtorock, King Creosote, Patrick Wolf
Seems like the perfect thread to mention these guys; http://lookstranger.bandcamp.com/
definitely a band taking cue from Wild Beasts (like I mentioned above) in making werid pop music. Though I wouldn't harbour any worries about over-similarities, for one they seem to get better and better and writing songs. Stream the upcoming EP at the above link, definitely download the previous two also.
