Interesting bit of science http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/02/15/guitar-zero-gary-marcus/
I might buy the book too. I teach so I know all about the 'zone of proximal development'. But I've started taking piano lessons again after stopping when I was 17, and I've made no bad progress in one year.
Ok, I did have a smattering to start with but I am sure anyone can learn at any age. I have great ambitions for playing guitar in my old age.
I think that what hold back people as the survey showed is the lack of time for total commitment on the matter.
I squeeze in my piano practice most days but it's difficult.. and then I'm lucky to be able to afford the lessons too. :)
On another matter ...
Were Radiohead ironic when they sang 'Anyone Can Play Guitar'? I heard it suggested. I would be very disappointed if I had sung that song in earnest for years!
