A thread that has probably been flogged to death...
With the Melvins, pretty much anything but Hostile Ambiant Takeover are decent albums. It's probably an idea to start with the Atlanta years stuff though as mentioned above.
It has amazing bassist Kevin Rutmanis from the Cows playing all the crazy slide noise stuff all over it. And they are all proper songs too with awesome riffs and also the greatest high speed country noise punk song ever written!
Colossus of Destiny has a similar name and is just an hour of (admittedly creepy) noise. And Prick is 80% bad. But otherwise I don't think you can go wrong. Unless you pick the Crybaby but if you're okay with the collaborators on the tracklisting you probably won't be disappointed (David Yow, Foetus, Skeleton Key etc)
I dunno about the last live album they released though which had a very similar tracklisting to the previous one. AND the new 12" split singles of songs from that same live album coupled with previously released songs from other bands. One for the fans like. Just get a proper album that isn't Colossus of Destiny or Prick and it's all gravy.
it's far from their best though. better are Stoner Witch, Stag, or the Maggot. The newest one, The Bride Screamed Murder is the best albums they've done in ages, if you wanna see where their at these days.
Definitely prefer Stoner Witch to Houdini
I also think A Senile Animal is a really good album as well
end with Lysol, Honky, Prick and Colossus of Destiny
are generally considered the classic Melvins albums. Almost everything is great though. Hostile Ambient Takeover and The Maggot are underrated. The last three albums with the guys from big business are really good, and it's not a bad idea to start with Senile Animal or The Bride Screamed Murder.
was the album that got me into The Melvins, and I've loved them ever since.
until I saw them live. Now I like them a lot. There is some crazy shit on them though, Houdini / Stoner Witch are all killer.
(A) Senile Animal is maybe the second best, then Honky, the Bullhead.
if you don't mind hearing multiple versions of a few of them. Some all-time favourite tracks on that one.
Cosign prunes, hanshotfirst and ContentToPlayVillain.
...and then A Senile Animal.
And then everything else.
