Common consensus seems to be that his classic period was 1972-1976. So, Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness First Finale and Songs In The Key of Life. I'd start with Talking Book. Get a hold of a Greatest Hits for the classic 60s hits though (unfortunately, you have to endure the godawful 80s stuff on the compilations though).

Hope it does the same for you: Sir Duke -

Music is a world within itself
With a language we all understand
    With an equal opportunity
For all to sing, dance and clap their hands

KillingMoon has got the records sorted up there^. You've got party Stevie and political Stevie but Songs, Talking Book, and Innervisions are the ones to get the essentials covered and a life long love in motion.

So warm, so smooth, so much feeling packed into a voice. When the hook explodes you have to stand and belt that ish out.

As good a sampler as you'll find with some brain meltingly amazing stuff all over it.

  • Side 4 on "Songs In The Key Of Life"

"As" and "Another Star" never ceases to amaze me. Herbie Hancock and George Benson were some of the session players on these songs.
