Britpop festival
Has no-one ever thought of trying to organise one? Regardless of musical quality, I reckon there's a good few thousand people (at least) who would pay to see Sleeper, Echobelly, Shed Seven, Menswear and all the bands that were bubbling under during the mid-nineties over a weekend...it's a nostalgia trip, innit.
Any thoughts? Who would you have on the bill?
- Canon in the 1990s: From Spiritualized to Coolio, Regurgitating Pachelbel's Canon
- Andy Bell of Ride & Oasis: "It would be a shame if we never got to play those songs one more tim
- Oasis - Time Flies 1994-2009
- NME Awards 2010 shortlist announced
- Spotifriday #30: This Week on DiS as a Playlist
- Animal Collective, Bat For Lashes and Florence up for Brit Awards
- Friday Fun: Guess the song from The Music Painter
- The Insider: Class Wars

Oasis
i think the problem that you will have
is the fact that 3 of those bands no longer exist as far as i am aware
Yup...
...reckon the main issue would be getting the bands to reform - altho in addition to Shed Seven, you currently have Marion touring. I think The Bluetones played last year, altho that might have been a farewell tour.
Doubt if the big boys (Pulp and Blur for example) would be up for it.
I think a lot of the medium-minor bands might do it as a one-off though.
I'm guessing a lot'll either be frustrated at the end of their glory days or be quite happy working in different jobs but still fancy a final dalliance on the stage.
Hey - I use the word "dalliance" now.
Who knew?
Any thoughts? Who would you have on the bill?
Julie Graham & serena Gordan. at the same time. yeah.
55k?
?
Babybird won't do it so I'm out.
Might come if Rialto play.
Fine, I've organised it...
...based on the acts still together/not disgusted by the whole idea. Here you go:

http://tinyurl.com/73wgoag
Get Jo Whiley and Steve Lamacq to DJ
and Chris Evans and Will whatever he was called to stumble around drunkenly in the crowd and I'm there.
you think Luke Haines would be happy to play this?
tbf he'd probably say he's going to do a set of Auteurs songs, turn up and play a 45 minute set of folk songs about Chairman Mao
I doubt if Luke Haines...
...is ever happy about anything tbf.
Bluetones have split up
and no way would Luke Haines agree, but Bennet could step in last minute and play the Iceland song and everyone could weep
Longpigs please
and Gene
and Tiger
and Bis
and Menswear
and Sleeper
and Lush
and Kenickie
and Kula Shaker
Cheers!
I'd heard that Manda Rin died
but it appears that she has a website and last posted on Jan 24th - phew!
The drummer from Lush hung himself, though. :(
yeah I heard about the LUSH dude
sad times
Yup, that's why...
...they will never reform. Sad as I fucking love Lush and never got to see them live back in the day. Caught Emma Anderson's later Sing Sing a few years ago who were alright.
Miki Berenyi...would.
I wonder what the woman from Salad looks like these days...

It took about 30 seconds
before the temptation to click on the link down the side for the On A Leash video became too much.
She does have multiple sclerosis, though
Bis play the odd gig every so often - Primavera a couple of years ago, for one.
She's looking rather trim these days!

I'd go to an older version
if you could get Stump, The Close Lobsters, 1000 Violins, The Shrubs etc to play.
I've had this idea

I would also do just about anything for this type of festival to happen, Shit Britpop or not (Shitpop!). I'm so bummed that Marion is only touring in the UK (though I'm not shocked, obviously). Tickets for Pulp's show here in San Francisco sold out in 5 minutes and due to the Warfield's shitty ticketing website, I didn't get any so I just spent an ungodly amount on a pair from StubHub. :(
Bring Britpop fest to San Fran, please.
Props to cherrycola!
Great minds think alike and all that. :)
Dodgy have a new album about to come out so they'd have to be in the line-up, surely?
Yeah, I can't see any of the big/successful bands (i.e. Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Suede) wanting to be involved but then that would probably go against the spirit of the thing, especially as most of them have distanced themselves from the Britpop scene. It's more about giving the also-rans another day in the sun (although you can never trust the British weather, can you?).
Damn...who can we get to stump up the money for this?!
I bumped Dodgy from my original bill...
...as I wasn't sure if they were still together.
Actually, maybe the bigger bands might reform to do it in The US - sort of like how western actors are not ashamed to hawk products in Japan as it's not their home market. Blur/Pulp/Supergrass megatour for North America?
I think half the point of this festival
is to get bands that broke up back together. Your line-up is great, though.
It better be...
...I've really gone out on a limb with this thing - if you could stop posting on here and go buy a ticket, and maybe a few for friends and family too, that would be great.
YES NORTH AMERICAN MEGATOUR
Let's add Suede to the bill. I am still holding a grudge about Coachella 2011. I was living on the east coast at the time. Seriously Suede? You come all the way to the US and just play Coachella? Pffft.
i wouldn't have dodgy
as they were shit
I need to add some more bands
Bennet
Dweeb
Powder
Republica (?)
...and how come no-one's mentioned Elastica yet?!
Also, could Radiohead play if they did "The Bends" in its entirety?
Scarily...
...didn't Republica do a tour last year?
no to republica
awful awful band and probably awful people as well
Bennet!!
Christ, I played their first album to death. And probably the second one as well if I'm being honest...
MY MUM HAS GONE TO ICELAND
I have a signed copy of that CD
I think at some point we might have to stop trying to milk every last bit of cash out of people's childhood/youth nostalgia
cc ATP
I'm with you on that
says someone who's just paid 59 quid to see Afghan Whigs.
It's not nostalgia for me
I'm a young'un that just happened to discover Britpop during it's 2000/2001 "death rattle." Everyone had either broken up by that time, or released their terrible final album and never toured in America. I'd love to see these bands play, even if it's impossible for me to go back in time and catch them in their prime.
Well good for you
(don't mean this sarcastically by the way)
Your in luck
Space have just reformed
For reference

I listened to the Boo Radleys this morning
Then flicking through a second hand record shop I found LPs by Kula Shaker and Sleeper this afternoon. Now this thread. Britpop is back!
LPs
I reckon you could get a few quid on ebay for Kula Shaker & Sleeper LPs. Not a lot of LPs were pressed up in the mid 90s.....so albums like Parklife & His n Hers etc are pretty sought after
They are!
I collect Britpop LPs and the more popular albums can go for hundreds of dollars. I recently saw Elastica's debut LP listed for $150 on Amazon. Menswear's Nuisance cost me only $20. Wonder why. ;)
Elastica LP
I have an Elastica LP!
Nice!
I do now, too. :) (Didn't spend $150 on it either)
I did wonder, I know mid-90s LPs can be rare
Sleeper - Smart & Kula Shaker - K were going for about 12 quid each, decent condition. A completed listing for Sleeper got about £3 so I don't hold too much hope.
First on the bill:
Cheeky scouse also-rans Smaller
David Devant and His Spirit Wife
and Adorable too.
I've seen David Devant & His Spirit Wife...
...a couple of times over the past few years. Still great fun.
Not sure Adorable were ever britpop however. Good band mind.
Adorable...
...were definitely pre-britpop and were actually pretty good!
the top of this thread says...
"a few thousand people would pay to see... Menswear"
No, no they wouldn't.
This could have legs though- Mansun, Gene, Sleeper, Echobelly, Kulashaker playing a 50 minute version of Tattva etc. You would have to ban anyone who comes dressed like Liam Gallagher though
Breath deepaaaarrrrr...daydreamarrrrrr!
Ok, maybe not...but the combined forces of most of the bands mentioned previously would draw a more-than-decent crowd. I reckon there's got to be at least a Truck (before they knackered themselves)-sized festival to be had from this idea...or am I setting my sights too low?
D:
Ream?
:-P
Hope so.
I'm mostly looking forward to the chillout zone headlined by The Orb and Future Sound Of London.
Pssst: super secret* acoustic/ambient campfire set by The KLF featuring a 50 person gospel choir and an orchestra of a dozen harpists - attendance strictly limited to people who delete their facebook account, there and then, at the point of entry.
*Not really. #MuMu for full details.
This actually sounds great.
But most of these Britpop bands would have no intention of ever reforming, unfortunately.
