for a horrible second I thought Darren Cunningham was a goner.
jeez. bad choice of thread title dude
Christ i'd forgotten about this
happened again
every time
20th April
!!
Really looking forward to this
His recent remixes of the shangaan electro stuff is brilliant too: http://www.honestjons.com/label.php?pid=39147&LabelID=14815
Very cool mix for Boiler Room from the other week: http://boilerroom.tv/actress-40-min-mix/
Remix on Numbers on teh way n'all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=939tcRzPN88
Man I <3 Actress.
That Kodiak remix
is amazing.
Still no clips on Honest Jon.
I am checking the Honest Jon site everyday for clips
Actually I'm not, but think I will start.
up until today
I always assumed Actress was American. Don't know why.
Actress - Marble Plexus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrxoT4u5mcc
see I was fairly indifferent on Splazsh - liked it, not in love
but THAT is fantastic
Yes very good
Well done whoever ripped that
Ghettoville will “hopefully” be released in July.
Another new album from Actress later in the year if we're lucky.
http://www.factmag.com/2012/03/23/actress-hoping-to-release-second-album-of-2012-this-summer/
Available for pre-order from Boomkat (RIP that is)
With clips
http://boomkat.com/vinyl/511600-actress-r-i-p
Okay only three tracks
One of which is already on youtube...
that's just standard boomkat player surely?
Yes still clips though.
It is possible that I'm getting too excited about this release.
You're allowed Joseph SP
This is a BIG one - so excited. I have so far yet to buy Hazyville - I presume I'm missing out?
And I can outdo you on excitement - I've been wondering why it's R.I.P without the final full stop, when the common usage is R.I.P. and the title track has the full stop. An Honest Jon's artwork mistake? See, that's how excited I am...ridiculous!
Hazyville is great
of course you're missing out. go get it.
oh sorry. my mistake i confusedly thought you were disapointedly saying it looked as tho there were only 3 tracks on that record. but idk why i would have thought that. carry on as you were
Interview in the Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/apr/14/actress-darren-cunningham-rip?intcmp=ILCMUSTXT9384
Can't wait for this album.
he played for West Brom?!
Pre ordered!
Very excited.
seems to have done a good job
keeping it from leaking.
or am I looking in the wrong places?
yeah. excited, doubly so if there's another in the works. this year has been underwhelming, albums-wise. two Actress albums would be a good tonic for the mediocrity.
Where can you download this?
comes out on digi on friday I think
honest jons, boomkat, bleep, all the regular places.
Any legit previews out there?
I'm not finding any and the new one's not on Spotify yet. I don't know their stuff so I'm not going to buy blind.
I'll give the 2010 album a listen in the meantime...
some small previews on the honest jons link bellow
maybe this week sometime a stream will go up I don't know.
This is the only full-ish track thats surfaced really and it might not be the finished version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jheE5uenGBg
Out now!
http://www.honestjons.com/shop.php?pid=39612&CatID=124
On Honest Jon's only for the week then everywhere else after.
Streaming here
https://bleep.com/release/35819
Isn't this just previews of part-tracks?
It's the full thing
just it stops half way through songs and stuff so people don't rip it. You just need to hit the play button at the top again when it pauses.
Right
Kinda makes it too annoying to listen to, which seems pointless. Will wait for a proper stream.
Got this in the mail today
It's quite a step forward
Man
The Lords Graffiti is such a hands in the air moment
I got sent the first vinyl twice
So I only have the first half of the album :''''''''(
Man
Ive never heard of that happening before. You given HJ a bell about it?
Yeah I did
they told me to send it back and they'd pay for postage and everything and then I guess they'd give me the other one, but they didn't actually say that?
Super bummed though, need to find somewhere to download it.
I know someone with a copy of The White album with two first discs.
Although it's from back in the day so in the last 40 years it could easily have just had a weird swap moment with someone else's copy that he was living with.
You could try to find the person with two second halves
And swap?
haha
I've already told Honest Jon's i'd give it them back so that's not do able? would there even be one like that?
If anyone knows where I can download this and wants to pm me a link that would be nice because I had a look before and I couldn't find it. Are we allowed to say things like that on here? Dunno.
Today's Actress update
Someone, specifically mickooyy, has uploaded all the tracks to Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpw9K3y5rmI
RA give the album 4.5.
http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=10804
And that's all. thanks
So it's come to the point where I actually feel annoyed I can't preview this album.
The modern world, eh?
s'good, yeah?
think I miss the fizzy, clubby feel of Splazsh, but it's something different.
need to get to know it.
Only given it a couple of go's so far
but am pretty much blown away. Think it's only going to get better as well.
Been a few great records so far this year (Julia Holter, Earth, Dean Blunt/Inga Copeland) but don't think any of them are close to this.
SR review
http://www.sonicrouter.com/2012/04/review-actress-r-i-p-honest-jons/
This is brilliant
Shadow Form Tartarus <3
This is basically a nostalgia trip through 90s IDM
Depending on which track, it's VERY reminiscent of Plaid/Black Dog, mu-ziq, bits of Aphex and Luke Slater. Sounds catchy though - I'll add it to my wishlist.
I checked this out yesterday.
Underwhelming on first listen.
I gave it a ten.
Would love to see some discussion/comments below the article.
http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16970/reviews/4144845
Ask Sean to put a "Start a thread about this album" button at the bottom of reviews
Then the Community area would update when someone commented on your review and the comments on the boards could append to the review (instead of having two separate and parallel threads).
Assuming this is possible.
Music's pretty good. Cover is w*nk. Literally.
Man, I must be getting old....
This does nothing for me. :-(
Good interview with Darren
http://dummymag.com/features/2012/04/20/actress-interview-it-s-medicine-that-s-what-music-is/
what is the actual order of the last two tracks?
I'm seeing 14. IWAAD 15. N.E.W // 14. N.E.W 15. IWAAD and I don't know which is correct. I have the former.
either way, the track I have down as IWAAD is a fucking stunner
the ambient hazy one
its the latter
IWAAD - It Was All A Dream
so IWAAD - the lovely, delicate one - is meant to be the proper closer, yer?
makes more sense
N.E.W is the delicate one and IWAAD is the thumper that closes the album
I like the Persona 3 reference
Great album, really enjoying it. Takes a few listens, but it's easy to get lost in
Arrived today - just got through my first listen.
Fucking DiS has those video ads that just start playing WITH SOUND when the page loads, so for a second there I thought Cunningham had included a sample of a woman talking about Windex at the end of 'Serpent.' Despite that, I think this might be everything I could possibly want from an album. Will need at least six thousand more listens.
Loving this album
really enjoying finding ways of spinning it into DJ sets too, you'd think it'd be a mission but it really isn't to far away from people like Gerry Read, Wbeeza, Kassem Mosse, Mux Mool, Madteo, DJ Sotofett, etc in asethetic.
hmm
having trouble with this record
the production/texture is pretty much perfect for my tastes and yet it's really not holding my attention - large swathes of it are just, well, dull and boring
not sure why this, of all of his work, is getting the hype? Am I missing something or is it a simple case of the critical community catching up with an artist and showering praise for the whole body of work on their most-recent-and-not-necessarily-their-best work
??
Pretty much how i've felt
I mostly covered it in that sonic router review above but it doesn't have so much of the playful unexpected nature of some of his previous work. Kind of feel like it doesn't ask me any questions so I struggle to have any kind of relationship with it.
For what it's worth
I've been listening to him for years, reckon have heard pretty much everything he has ever released and I think this is the best thing he's done, hands down.
In terms of the critical community only just catching up with him, 'Splazsh' was almost universally adored (it was the Wire's album of the year in 2010, came in at no. 4 in Resident Advisor's staff poll for the same year, etc) so I don't think it's that.
Give it a few more spins!
I don't like it as much as Splazsh
but its on par with Hazyville for me and thats still a pretty high standard. Still exploring it really. Its up there as one of my favourites of the year so far but not quite up there against LHF or Shackleton at the moment. Close to Mix Mup & Kassem Mosse or Bass Clef tho. I think there is a load of good will rolling on with Actress tho even tho Splazsh was really well recived it was still missed by a lot of people. Just like there is a load of good will rolling thru with Hype Williams at the moment, which I don't think is anywhere near as good as some of their other stuff. They're both still damn solid tho so it aint all bad.
I think it's fucking excellent.
Wonderfully interesting record.
Still not totally sold on RIP
but this mix is bloody excellent
http://www.factmag.com/2012/06/15/actress-goes-very-very-deep-for-dazed-digital/
Got it on vinyl yesterday
and don't regret it, it's incredible. One of my favourite albums this year.
*thinly-veiled i-got-a-vinyl post*
Seeing the title of this topic I thought that an actress just died... :)
has skipped two shows in the last month (at least)
Really hope he doesn't cancel Bloc.
Hooray
Now on spotify
