Mink Lungs
i don't
She tries too hard.
And she makes me think of the smell of plimsolls. Reason enough, methinks.
Her awful voice,
a staggering lack of unoriginality and her songs are massively overwrought. She seems like a nice lady though.
She has a good voice, don't be silly
Her debut album is called Lungs because she has a good voice.
No she has a big voice
It just bludgeons you into submission.
To be honest I don't have any strong feelings either way, except that godawful You Got the Love cover.
It's just Mariah style warbling.
For the houmous eating classes.
Take that back
I like houmous
I do too.
Whilst I'm not a fan of Ms Welch, I'm pretty sure I form part of her core demographic.
Just because she (or her marketing men) say it don't make it so
If I called my album 'cheekbones' would it make me handsome?
(I promise you it would not)
Good voice?
I heard her live on Radio 1 and she was completely out of tune, couldn't hit any of the right notes, and just shouted to compensate. She has one of the worst voices I've ever heard.
They airbrush her alot, don't they?
Mate, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't touch her with yours
but I'd maybe listen to her with your ears.
If I wanted to be shouted at by a horse-faced ginger
I'd go on the Weakest Link
i like her
Shake It Out is one of my favourite songs of last year. I'm almost obsessed with it.
I have no time for anything else she's done. Cheers.
Yeah, honestly I can't understand a word she says
That and she claims to be 25 when she's clearly about 54 (at least!)
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm no more
i think it's a combination of:
- the foghorn voice
- namby pamby half arsed mystical lyrics
- the 'eccentricity'
- the shit where she stole from gang gang dance
- the racism
racism?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGH-4jQZRcc
I dunno...
without wanting some huge debate about the nature of racism and prejudice I'm not sure that constitutes racism does it? I mean, its kind of weird and unnecessary... but racist?
that video just confirmed what I originally thought
I really dislike her.
Overwrought vocals, hilariously bombastic arrangements,
Awful in interviews - ' I was considering the death of Virginia Woolf and the place that drowning occupies as a cultural metaphor '
AND - changed YOU got the love, to YOU'VE got the love ... unforgivable grammar snobbery.
I'm not white enough.
- horribly strained and forced voice
- songs that all sound remarkably similar
- the fact that she is now considered royalty due to one chart-topping ringtone that wasn't even her own tune.
'Overwrought' is the key word I think
A lot of her songs have ok bits, but they all end up being completely bombastic and over the top but not in an interesting way - it's like an annoying posh girl at a party shouting 'I'm really crazy and interesting' at the top of her voice.
Her singing voice is powerful, but powerful like a foghorn and entirely without nuance or timbre. Her songwriting is contrived and utterly unconvincing.
Also, the message of 'A kiss with a fist' is a distinctly dodgy one to be throwing at our pop kids.
I find it amazing that she is so successful, whereas Natasha Khan, who I think is genuinely interesting and talented, seems to have disappeared.
all the above is true, particularly this bit:
it's like an annoying posh girl at a party shouting 'I'm really crazy and interesting' at the top of her voice
natasha khan
is back soon. She was recording in december and I keep seeing her when I cycle home in london. That's got some relevance I'm sure.
If I saw her when I was cycling
I would definitely fall off my bike.
I stopped the first two times.
Now I just stare. ALOT.
because they suck
She's basically a art-school Anastasia.
Bellowing out songs with over-bombastic arrangements devoid of subtlety.
I think a few of her tracks are okay.
This is going to sound really twatty, but I saw her at the first Field Day (with Lightspeed Champion and Kid Harpoon in her backing band) and she was a lot more interesting. Still seemed like she knew she had nice legs a little too much for my liking, but I came away thinking that she sounded a lot more promising than it's turned out.
^ this
i saw her as well before in a tent of about 20 people, thought she had a great voice and some of her early material was really good. but the lack of subtlety these days is shocking.
on a side note, when there's (quite rightly) complaints about female musicians being judged on their looks, i find it really depressing the amount of times i see/hear female journalists (music or otherwise) going on about what age she might be, as if it matters.
and the bat for lashes comparison
holds absolutely no water any more.
it's not that it matters how old she is, it's an opposite - it matters that she lies about how old she is
it wouldn't be made an issue if she was male.

^
saw her support Scout Niblett way back, just her + a guitar player. thought it was really good.
It's unbelievable how horrible people are about her just because they don't like her music
^
If she Googles herself and finds this thread, she'll be really sad and I'll be in some way responsible :(
don't worry zapsta
i'm sure she has 'people' to google herself for her
Don't worry Zapsta
Sean's linked her to the thread.

All the pissing bellowing on every song.
I've got nothing against Florence
but the Machine can fuck off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVHJrz6Sk7U&t=1m13s
because I have seen this video/interview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvMfbfZKVbY
Pretty hot.
she isn't being asked any questions,
and i expect interviews can get pretty boring.
fair Play to her on that one.
Jefferson Aeroplane
Because she won't join my London-based band
;-)
I think Shake it Out is quite a good song.
And, in general, I don't find anything particularly terrible about her music. It's the contrived, floaty-floaty manic pixie demeanour she seems to gain in interviews that really puts me off her. Although there are lots of musicians who I like that are cunts, so there's probably more to it than that.
the worst tribute to Atom & His Package going
3 reasons...
1. She has an annoying, shouty, charmless voice that is constantly championed by the Guardian as if she's the new Kate Bush. She fucking ain't...
2. Florence & the Machine, that's the name. Who the fuck are the Machine? A bunch of session musicians shuttled in on a ginger whim? Whatever they may be, can't they share some of the spotlight?
3. She slaughtered 'You got the Love' by Candi Staton... But, I found out in that Joss Stone also covered it, so I like to think that Flo was covering Joss. Which makes her even more hateful....
shuttled in on a ginger whim
I'd shuttler HER ginger whim, or something...
I have no idea.
BECAUSE SHE'S MIDDLE CLASS!!!11
i don't really like women singers
there are exceptions but she's not one of them. Songs are interesting and original though.
nice.
She reminds me of the Confused.com adverts
i.e. the current ones where the cartoon woman's singing in the tune of 'YMCA', and it's all sung ridiculously and offensively loudly – so much so that the vocals are audibly distorted and clipped.
Thankfully however, Ol' Flossy's not quite as bad as this
Should've known that wouldn't work
It's become clear she'd.........
.....sell every last fragment of her soul for fame and fortune. I like an occasional slice of bombast but she seems very ungenuine. A shame coz she does possess a couple of half decent tunes.
BCC: Marina and the Diamonds
I'm quite confident
she's some American parentage in there somewhere and hence the 'ungenuine' pseudo English quirkiness. And the constant playing on daytime '6' is just weird, somebody at the Beeb clearly loves her.
She's a record label made commodity
She's been polished up, covered in couture, over produced, airbrushed and shoved into the limelight. Sad thing is, she seems to like it. That's why I don't enjoy her music. I feel like it was designed to make money. That type of music will never touch the soul. I imagine she is fairly talented. But the whole PR thing that surrounds her reeks of manipulation. Has she sold her musical soul to the Label and her ego?
I don't like her
because her boomy, shallow music ain't for me. Not because of some Beeb conspiracy or whatever, jeez.
You know that arty pop thing CoCoRosie does and how it's always on the verge of being incredibly irritating but always manages to end up being pretty good
yeah, shes what CoCoRosie would sound like if they stepped over the lune, took a shit on it then threw up
line*
I forgot to mention, imagine all the above
with a fog horn going off in your ear, with all the added fun of clipping
I don't mind her music to be honest.
Though she gives the impression that she thinks her product is greater than it really is. This might not be true, but it's an unfortunate vibe to put out.
Also - she went to Alleyn's School in South London. I went round there on an open day recently for my daughter, and we looked around the music block. It contained a series of glass studios full of proto-florence, penate and maccabee clones (all alumni) with asymmetric haircuts rocking out. My daughter took one look and said "I want to go here!". Sadly, she didn't get the necessary scholarship that my finances required, so she ended up in a (very good) local comprehensive. Tough shit.
So that's why I don't like Florence. A touch of sour grapes, but it's all too easy from some people.
A friend from south london swears she stole her entire first album from a band she formed there. I've never read anything about that in the press so I presume it was long enough ago not to have come up. But yeah, massive plagiarist.
do you not think something like that would have been brought up by now?
these theories amuse me.
She recorded an album with a band she was part of
But left before it was released so it got shelved.
There's one song on Lungs that's on that record, although titled differently.
@manbearpig..
seeeee
stole entire album
one song
I like one song, otherwise I think her voice is pretty damn average.
Song: Hurricane Drunk
because my friend told me she lied about her age
i just can't accept people lying about their age.
Bad experience?

THE HORRORS?
The horror!
Thanks Sean!
It's good to see that Florence and the ghost band are playing the big venues now, and her bank balance isn't suffering from anyone with taste thinking that she's is a dispicable human being with a bullshit shouty voice.
Despicable human being?
Calm down.
Fair enough charliepanayi....
....a bit strong admitted. Knee jerk reaction. Would have probably helped if I'd have been able to spell. Still think she's a big shouty annoyance though.
is it cuz she's managed by the Queens of Noize?
Wonder where Dominic Masters is now.
Chill out. If you don't like her music, don't listen to it.
she seemed really nice when i met her
*thinly vei...* etc
but i only like the first 10 seconds of this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP_jsy6Trrc before she goes LOUD
There's nothing wrong with the music per se
I just can't get any connection to it. It tries to be very large and important and grand and epic, but it has the same emotional connection as very loud elevator music to me.
She obviously lies about her age.
Can't say i've heard anything else of her apart from that Got The Love song. Meh.
I don't dislike her just couldn't give 2 fucks.
what do you mean why don't "I" like florence & the machine?
80 frikkin million americans have drawn her to their breast, we're gonna make her career so big NO ONE will like her!! Oh and by the way, keep your shitty artists to yourself from now on. Yeah that means you beady eye mumford & sons and manic street preachers.
You sound nice
I was right behind you
until you dissed the Manics.
why do people keep accusing her of lying about her age?
is it because she's really tall?
women don't just carry on growing forever you know
this would be so awesome if it were true.
land of the giants! she ain't menopausal though but there is no way she's more than a year younger than me. she's 30+, easy.
Her music isn't awful.
Most of what she says in interviews is. She's not a dick, just unbearably pretentious and self-consciously 'kooky'.
But the main reason is that she's not Kate Bush. She's probably talented enough to be, but by the time 'You've Got The Love' reared its overwrought head she'd aligned herself quite definitely with the unit-shifting mainsteram to me.
She is not talented enought to be Kate Bush
Can you imagine Florence writing something as sensitive and introspective as "This Woman's Work" for instance?
I dunno, maybe
If she'd given herself more room to manouvre
it's that square head
plus she sucks, what don't you understand?
It's really
Absence of tunes
Honking voice
The fact that for about two years she seemed to be honking out "you've got the love" on every festival/ music tc programme
Performance headlining at Latitude where she sang happy birthday to her sister to run the clock down for 10 minutes.
With Flo it's a case of 'All emphasis is no emphasis.'
2 reasons
mainly the fact I don't like her voice. I know it's technically "good" but it doesn't resonate with me at all. What gets to me in a singing voice is something a bit weird, not technically perfect. One of my favourite vocal perfomances of the last few years would be this http://youtu.be/GevJO5Gx5zw which isn't "perfect" but it's not shit by any means.
The other reason is I met someone a few years ago in Barcelona who had to look after her when she played a gig at the Razzmatazz club in Barclenona (before she took off commerically) and apparantly she was a proper dick, demanding all different types of tea on her ryder otherwise she wouldn't play. So yeah, after hearing that I took a dislike to her, and this was before I'd even heard her music.
Her Shaun...
Ryder?
Because she's almost as boring as this thread.
Because her voice is annoying
Because her music is bummed by annoying trendy kids, despite being shit.
