as apparently they are now. apparently.
(yeah, like I'd get to see any date of theirs)
with a thirty minute jam outro
Along with Refused.
Guess all those TMV session musicians weren't cheap.
for the Warper Tour, apparently.
but while ATDI and Refused is all well and good, the real holy shit here is Texas Is The Reason.
Didn't realise half of my post was going to turn into a semi-possibility tonight though.
(well, that almost worked)
anything actually new?
And Refused also? I think I would actually shit my pants.
Basically, about, what, five years ago now, I interview TMV, and when I brought up their previous band, the party line was a sneery, indifferent, half-assed hatred of their own output
"We were just savvy guys who signed on the dotted line while we were ripping off Drive Like Jehu."
And they repeatedly said they weren't proud of that band, or their music.
Sorry to be a grump about it but this is the ultimate NEED MONEY tour.
and I am a massive, MASSIVE Volta fan.
Also NB no 6th TMV album despite it "being ready" last February, then "scrapped and re-written" by July and 5 months later....eh...no.
NBC in December.
just a guess.
I want to feel smug, but its not the best of news is it if its true.
sit the fuck down.
ive got piles and i think im mildly excited by the prospect of a new atp announcement....
only dis seems to be reporting this?
When we were teenagers.
Without girlfriends (mostly).
They were still really good, though.
Can everyone chilllllllll? It's not being reported anywhere else.
The Coachella lineup with Refused on it was confirmed as a fake, so I really can't see this happening. Especially since Jim just confirmed Sparta are back recording again.
and thank god, anyway.
Like Guntrip says upthread, I don't need that dickhead breaking out into 90 minute guitar and mariachi trumpet solos in the middle of songs.
Calexico do that perfectly fine.
But not ATDI. They would probably end up doing a £30 ticket tour of soulless arenas anyway if they did.
Souless Carling Academies maybe. Sticking them in arenas would be a worse idea than that Steps arena tour.
They were never that big a band, and they're still not.
would it be prudent to mention yet again that i saw them back in the day and they were fucking shit?
this has to be a new record
Dennis seems happy enough playing people's barbecues in Sweden with AC4
|"AC4 is a hardcore band from Umeå, Sweden. Ex-Refused members Dennis Lyxzén and David Sandström had been talking about starting a new band for a long time.... The first show was at a squatting on Parkgatan in Umeå on the 5th of May 2008."
and he clearly states them and Refused are getting back together this year, but references what appear to be little more than rumours, so I'm not fully convinced, but I'm still hoping.
AWAY, SEND TRANSMISSION TO THE ONE ARMED SCISSOR...
I don't care why they do it. They better not do new stuff. Relationship of command in full
to hype up the release of the latest Mars Volta record.
Presumably in the next link he'll go "there's a website, beyond that we don't know".
there being a virtually blank website and a Twitter account isn't strictly the way a band announces its return.
I'm fucking pumped for this.
Especially as the Mars Volta announced their new album today or yesterday, but the reunion news has been picked up by all the big magazines, including Rolling Stone, who I would have thought have sources they check with before publishing things. Or am I just crediting them with more journalistic wherewithal than they actually possess?
so guess thats legit
is a DiS link. Good work.
One part of me thinks it's finally a chance to see a band I love who I never got to see and who were pretty formative for me.
The other part is a bit upset that they've come back like this following all the efforts both sides made to move on. It just felt like ATD-I were done; it made sense to finish where they finished musically. The Mars Volta made sense as a continuing project for what Omar and Cedric wanted to do: why abandon that now? Their whole schtick was 'we don't care about the record sales or the money, we just want to make the music we want to make'. This feels a bit like a step in the other direction. Idk though. There's probably good reasons for it. And I hope it makes them some money if that's what they need. They definitely deserve some more reward for what they did.
they might just have come round abit, re-evaluated the past, realised how much they loved that music at the time, repairing burnt bridges with each other
The fact of the matter is that we’re in our thirties now and that breakup happened ten years ago. As a human being you just don't want that kind of karma. We did a lot of shit talking, and they did a lot of shit talking, so I just called everybody up and invited them to my house and said ‘hey, listen, we’re in our thirties now, I’m sorry for whatever I said, I'm sure you guys didn’t mean what you said–you guys were upset because I split up the band and we were upset because of whatever. "Let’s be friends again. But do I want to reunite and play fucking 15 year old songs? Well, it would be like asking you, ‘do you want to get back together with your first girlfriend?’ You learn some amazing things together, but I just shudder at the thought. We were a band that went out on top, which is good, but it’s just a coincidence. We were also a band that had been together for seven years, and for six of those years played to nobody and had a great time but were also on the verge of splitting up many times before that. It’s an old relationship. People would like to think of it as unfinished business because to them we went out when we were most popular, but that has nothing to do with the creative element. As far as the creative element went, it very much was finished business. That’s why I ended the band! Now, thank god, fucking ten years later, we're not holding a grudge and we’re all cool with it. People pick up on the difference of attitude and think 'oh, this could mean a possible reunion', but that’s just them projecting their own desires upon us."
Then again I also just don't see the point of any band reforming this long after they've split up. The only glimmer of interest I have is the fact it's happened in the same week that the Coachella lineup is supposedly being released and I'm going this year...
a couple of years ago playing those songs might have seemed unthinkable but after a couple of years of rekindled friendship they might look back more favourably at the whole period and think whilst creatively there isnt much left for them to explore it might just be fun to get together and play. not ruling out they probably are just doing it for the money, I just think its odd to hold bands to things theyve said in interviews when everyone can be fickle or contradictory or just change
its motivated by wanting to present himself in a certain way, not looking back, slightly negativity towards his old band to make his current one appear relevant and creative
Cedric and Omar have always said they hate looking back. It's not one interview, it's every interview. I don't know, I'd just like the reformation to be more... impassioned and joyous, I guess. Instead, there's the stink of it being a bit of a cashcow. Which is ok, I suppose, Pixies did it and I enjoyed their shows.
yeah I dont know why I was arguing really, its pretty likely to be for the money
on the wiki
they do tour the uk, doubt they'd do any bigger than Brixton mind...
an underwhelming 2nd billing on the main stage at Reading/Leeds, playing to people who have no idea who they are & are waiting for the headliners?
as someone up there said, they're not THAT big
about half a million listeners on last.fm, granted only about a quarter to a third of arcade fire who are headlined, but still enough for a high billing on the main stage, and given that the amount of hype they are bound to get from the reformation their profile is gonna be higher than in 2000 so those listening figures are gonna jump. I really think there comeback could be quite big, they bring together different groups, are seen as a great lost band for many, it will have a lot of features written on it, I dunno unless there is reformation fatigue
or maybe headline second stage at Reading, (like Faith No More when they reformed) or maaayyyyybe at a push, headline?
either way this is a bit annoying but also awesome.
In reality I can't see either of them not at Reading, but both of them will only be as good as they should be if they are in the Radio 1 Tent.
Any chance that them and Refused will both play Pheonix and Pheonix will be good? hmmmm
just mostly different crowd
deciding to reform a band that everyone likes?
...people post some right old shit on message boards
At least wait for some interviews to judge the context and motivation for the reformation.
I for one am massively, massively excited. I just hope they come over to England asap.
Oh fuck I am actually going to Coachella, this is going to be the best holiday ever. The line up is fucking unreal. ATDI AND REFUSED. Fuck.
They're second on the bill at coachella? Last time they were in the UK they played manchester academy 2 for crying out loud! Seems to be that the best thing any band can do is split and reform later. A bit sad that really.
and play some proper gigs in places other than London

When At The Drive In called it quits I laughed and said one less piece of shit.
