Radiohead
Bands/albums from other genres that Radiohead pretend to like.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4312933
I think the lack of Vitamin LZ was quite apparent from their last album.
...
Because each member has generally different tastes....
Thom = electronic, Jonny = modern classical etc etc etc
That's why it's unnaturally diverse.
AH I SOUND LIKE SUCH A STALKER FANBOY
Just ignore that post. Ignore every post. Hide me.
Just ignore that post. Ignore every post. Hide me.
is the title of the new Radiohead b-side.
Electronic isn't a genre
But yeah, they like both kinds, country AND western
they so nearly got away with it too!
thank god for eagle-eyed music buffs who know a calculated playlist when they see one!
Music Radiohead make > music Radiohead listen to > music I listen to > Pinkerton > Pablo Honey
unnatural diversity
hate this. so cynical to even suggest anyone would go to such effort to fake people out.
So cynical I assume that's cynical
TO assume
wahtever, that didn't make sense anyway
semi-abandon on the train DiS posting
it's not an 'effort' or 'fake' that a massive famous band would put together this kind of list based on
what they would like people to associate with them, what they would like their fans to be inspired to check out or what goes well with their public image and marketing and not just what they've personally had on their ipod on the tour bus or whateverrr and it's not at all cynical to be aware of this.
too many ands i guess
I see this
as an avuncular gesture, coming from some people who are really passionate about a great deal of hugely varied music. I can imagine someone half their age compiling such a list in the out of insecurity; I did it myself when I was younger, listing all the music I loved on my old Myspace page. but those were the actions of a kid with very low self-esteem for whom the music as an extension of himself was the only thing that gave him any validation.
even as a marketing ploy it makes no sense. they're a band with excellent taste, this is well known.
personally, my philosophy regarding music is to be ridiculously open-minded and open-hearted in sharing, which comes from listening to Peel. pretty sure Thom et al are of the same mindset.
Cronin: this uneasy feeling you have about this and other lists...do all these lists feature a lot of what could be lumped together under the catch-all term 'bass music'?
im normally not a fan of criticisms that are based on something that cant be known
but gotta admit everything about radiohead strikes me as calculated, the tasteful genre tourism, their occasional brushes with politics, their innovative release strategies, all seem to scream look how relevent we are, they never seem to relax or convey a simple enjoyment of making music. I know that is very cynical of me but it is the impression that ive formed (only really talking about thom)
okay
There's definitely a curatorial, tastemaker thing about the band, Thom especially, but I just don't believe it's a hollow, calculated gesture like is being suggested. The stylistic range of the list makes perfect sense in the context of the band. Why go to such lengths if it isn't a matter of loving music? Besides, why would middle-aged men resort to the tactics of a social networking teen struggling to establish some kind of identity?
Yeah they should really just be listening to the last Interpol album over and over.
I own it.
S'alright.
that is completely bollocks
i see radiohead as the pink floyd of today
in terms of the size of their fanbase, and its mainstream/critical crossover. I think its an achievement really that they appeal to people who may have more diverse tastes in music and people who may only buy one album a year, not something to scorn at.
I don't think Radiohead have much of a mainstream crossover at all anymore.
They tend to sell decent numbers by attracting lots of people from different sections of alternative culture but I'm pretty sure most "mainstream" music fans couldn't name more than 2 or 3 (at most) of their post-2000 output.
they're a massive cult band
but that nature of "mainstream" has changed so much since the 1990s that debating it is basically meaningless.
nah. the people who only buy an album a year
are far more likely to be the type who buy james blunt/adele/other MOR shit.
yeah true
I wasn't trying to do anything other than vaguely consider Kennydopes bullshit assertion for a minute, which If it was true wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Obviously it would be a good thing if everyone was listening to the king of limbs instead of adele.
not from my experience
the guy i sit opposite at work rarely buys music, he bought 'king of limbs'.
he also bought the beady eye, eminem and noel gallagher albums this year. he's a typical 40 something who just continues to listen to the same artists he listened to in the 90s.
aNDEAnd what did he think of TKOL?
Well...
He said he liked it but I rarely see it on his desk being played.
but did they buy it from HMV
or discogs?
needs more punk

effing post dubstep everywheres
Ween - Your Party
ONE GOOD PIECE OF MUSIC ON THE WHOLE LIST
Seriously though it's a good song.
I thought I was the only person who liked this track.
I just like how obvious the swingers thing is
"the party raged, and the guests were screaming" *stupid sax wailing*
I did one of those 'your top 100 songs ever' DJ sets last year
and played that song cos it owns hard
good one to end the set with imho.
thom's taste > jonny's taste > phil's taste
Proper tunes for proper lads.
shall we derail this thread with art ensemble of chicago talk?
what's everyone favourite record?
i do like jackson in your house & i love malachi favors' vocals, esp. as he's always struck me as one of the coolest of the main guys (r.i.p.), but not as much as later records like bap-tizum, live in paris &the spiritual. i miss famadou don moye's drumming i guess.
who is your favourite non-art ensemble member of the aacm? mine is henry threadgill: total dude, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLQ26ktzk7M (followed by braxton/abrahms not sure)
brigitte fontaine or fontella bass?
i need glasses- should i get some like roscoe used to wear. i think i've seen don cherry wearing a similar pair. maybe they dont actually have frames and it's just a free-jazz hipster thing, still...where can i find some anyone?
also,
'your fanny's like two sperm whales floating down the seine'
also,
has anyone ever actually seen that movie? any good?
also since all the 'new thing' guys went to live in paris for a while, why are there not really any french jazz musicians from that era that are not jean-luc ponty etc.
you may think this url is a joke but it isn't.
http://www.retrospecs.co.uk/
bloody hell, expensive though
eesh
yesssssss!
http://www.firmoo.com/anthony-braxton-eyeglasses.html
just came here to post this!
Anthony Braxton Eyeglasses - actually a thing.
imho the world is crying out for a Pharaoh Sanders hat range also.
What is Radiohead Office?
I clicked the links but couldn't see. Is this where they all go to work and sit around in their cubicles arguing about what should go on the stereo? Or a combined list of music likes from band members should they hilariously have to do something as mundane as actually work in an office and debate whether putting Heart FM on will lead to a stabbing or not?
http://tinyurl.com/bpqaaoe
Arf!
With that kind of office space only one thing's going to happen and that tune list is going to do nothing to soundtrack a fella's footie playing. They need to get some Kasabian on the stereo or something.
Nah, Kasabian is too avant-garde, even for Radiohead.
Their office has a really minimal setup.
That's all the equiment you need to write an 'unnaturally diverse' song of the year list
Phil has just suggested that they add cool-dad band The Fleet Foxies to the list, and that's why Thom is face-palming.
was gonna troll this thread but I see brightonb got here first
anyway, no surprises really, is it? s'all pretty 'worthy' stuff that The Wire et al would fall over themselves for.
How was that trolling?
That Radiohead like good music doesn't seem to be a particularly controversial opinion
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4316730#r6477601
ah... fair play
not one to stand up for bb, but that's kind of true too.
Whoa?!!
No Coldplay on that list?!
Dudley Perkins!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOZ93UE-Td0
Thought I was the only guy on earth that appreciated that voice.
