Band Merch
Thinking of getting some DiS merch done, with our new logo. Just curious what awesome things you've all bought this year and where from.
Trying not to veer too far toward the ridiculous (hipflasks, umbrellas, kindle sleeves) and mostly thinking of doing some special limited edition t-shirts, and some other tees.
Liked my GGD tee from http://www.thetrilogytapes.com/ttt/

I'd advise against t-shirts unless you want to follow the Wire type model
where they do limited edition t-shirts designed by someone - artist, label, tastemaker etc. Much better than plastering your logo across a t-shirt, which doesn't make any sense to me for websites and blogs etc. Though their hoody is very nice and minimal, but only because their logo is so simple. Fancy that the DiS one is a bit too busy for that to work. The drowning man bit maybe has potential.

thanks for the wire info (hadn't started looking at what other media do yet)
we're actually killing off the drowning man.
new logo is subtle. and my brief for the designer was that it needed to be t-shirt worthy! :)
i've always wanted to get acts to design tees for us. def something for us to look into next year.
Hmm
I think the main thing to say about me as a consumer of such things is that I only buy the stuff for the design - not simply because I love that band.
I only bought two over the last 12 months, and whilst I love both acts, I got the t-shirts because the designs are really nice, minimal and quite 'smart' looking.

killing off the drowning man?!
as lbc says, that's the only DiS branding I reckon you could get away with. even then it'd have to be subtle.
also as lbc says, I buy the stuff for the design - not simply because I love that band. i'll buy a t-shirt at a gig by a decent band if the tee is nice. i've never bought (in recent times) a shitty tee from a gig by a act i adore, just cos it's an act i adore. and that criteria keeps me well-stocked in tees. can't remember the last time i bought a tee online tbh (or even if i ever have).
i'm the same
in fact, i own about 25 band t-shirts, and hardly any for some of my favourite bands as their merch is often not very good. Always really loved Deftones merch, and got quite a few of their tees (got another one for xmas). Really love Health and No Age's merch, and would probably buy their tees even if I didn't love their music (which is an odd concept, thankfully they're both awesome).
This Tom Waits tee is one of my favourites I own http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41KQCNM9hoL.jpg - so subtle and so very Tom Waits.
Got a feeling people will like how subtle the new logo is tho. All will be revealed in February-ish time.
YOU'RE WHAT?
I knew he wasn't waving. :'(
ironically
i am actually in the market for a kindle sleeve.
Just logged on to say this
I have a nice kindle sleeve as it is, but would totes but a dis kindle sleeve. More likely to be used than if I got a dis tee too.
indirect
but tote bags would be a good start.
yeah, i really want to get some decent totes
I was kinda stunned when I looked for a Kindle sleeve how few decent ones there were, which is why I started this thread :)
Oh right this is where that particular baffling outburst came from
gets funnier every time you post, yes
funny peculiar
If you make tote bags do not make them like those Rough Trade ones which might as well be made out of paper
You've been to Amoeba right? Copy their bag fabrics. Nice tough canvas, indestructible. If you can make a decent thick and durable tote bag I would definitely buy one.
Typical of the big football kit manufacturers.
We buy DiS-sponsored football shirts for the Big Scary Monsters 5-a-side and then they change the logo for the next season.
It's like Man Utd at their worst...
Our DiS shirts will become retro
And retro is cool: http://img.image-storage.co.uk/1488686529/4efb2d41873bd.png
jesus christ
who's the viking?
how is a travel mug different to a normal mug?
or do you mean those weird coffee keep-warmer things that Americans seem to love to drink in their cars when sat in traffic instead of car-pooling?
Are they the same as ths ones you see some peeps with on public transport, too?
#1 Doucheface accessory.
I know it's probably a smart move in making your own coffee to go, rather than doubling money away in a chain, but there's just something about them (our maybe it's just that the girl on my train who regularly has one comes across as objectionable?).

way more useful that fucking totes.
- Did you bring the travel mug Dougal?
- I brought the normal mug AND the travel mug, Ted. The travel mug for when we were travelling, and the normal mug for when we arrived.
- Good man!
- Ah no, wait a minute.. now that I think of it, I didn't bring either of them.

Get artists involved, and give them a blank slate
I like it when artists and labels go out of their way to sell projects that they've obviously spent loads of time and effort over. The Mute synth is a great example of this, as is The White Stripes mini theremin, and Jens Lekman's golden key. Aidan Moffat's singing bottle opener is my favourite from this year.
If you think there's no decent Kindle sleeves, make some. Get passionate about the item, rather than thinking 'hmm, a few t-shirts would be a nice additional revenue stream'.
Going on the special limited edition t-shirts idea
This is a good example of band designed shirts

DiS Pogo sticks! DiS sewing kits!
[Joke about jumped up indie pricks]!
patches
embroidered or punk style screenprinted
i wouldn't wear a t-shirt with a DiS logo on it.
i would however gladly wear t-shirts with social board inspired catchphrases on in huge bold lettering...
- eo
- SOAWJO
- CRICKET
- moses kiptanui
- KEYBOARD ZAPSTA
etc, etc.
yeah
i might use a print-on-demand company to do some DiSism t-shirts.
DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE, PAL
aww no not the drowning man!
i'd love a t shirt with a drowning man on, not so much a DiS logo
as above when it comes to band/site t shirts it's all about a nice understated design. Have a cool Menomena one and a nice simple Explosion in the Sky (they do some great t shirts) that's my lot at the moment.
Band t shirts usually fit like shit though
XXS & XS options for us skinny folk.
