Bleeps lists were all pretty good
would be this, except i havent made a list so...
much of which you'd probably like. Your loss though, I guess.
what are your top 10 albums of the year? I am genuinely interested as you have a very good taste in music :)
I've just finished my EOY round-up for my column, so that should be up fairly soon. Obviously, that only includes ambient related stuff...my overall top 10 would be something like
1. Barn Owl (and related projects)
2. Grails - Deep Politics
3. Hecker - Ravedeath
4. Deaf Center - Owl Splinters
5. Pinch & Shackleton - s/t
6. Lawrence English - The Peregrine
7. Sean Mccann - Sincere World
8. Corrupted - Garten Der Unbewussheit
9. The Caretaker - An Empty Bliss
10. Wolves In The Throne Rooms - Celestial Lineage
must have really clicked somethin heavy with you.
Effect might wear off in a few weeks I guess, but it just gets better with every listen at the moment.
I like lists as they provide the opportunity to catch up on things you might've missed throughout the year. But the pitfall is that you tend to judge a list based on what you already know that is featured in it. So you might miss out on a lot of good stuff because the list doesn't feature one of the 5-10 albums from the year that you already love.
Personally, this year's lists haven't really inspired me to go cratedigging that much. Maybe that'll change, don't know really.
between albums most enjoyed in a year, and ones that stand up over time. People cant know what will still "be good" in two years time and therefore can only speak of what they enjoyed in the previous twelve months.
while some slowly seeps into your life. I didnt get Sunn o))) to begin with, but eventually embraced them. Van Gogh was never admired in his life time.
especially when driving in the summer.
'Love Like a Sunset Part 1' is on a lot of playlists I listen to while I'm working too. And it sounded great in the soundtrack to Somewhere.
I always try to do the DiS list looking forward at the future. A lot of people still talk about that M83 record, and you find acts kinda need an active release or to be touring for folks to chat about them. A lot of the threads on DiS are usually about themes or reactions to new releases, people tend not to dwell backwards as much on individual releases.
I'm sorry but posting on DiS doesn't make you aware of the world. In fact, you're more closed-mined than my dad.
but whenever publications 'add in' some more leftfield albums, or those they wouldn;t usually coverr in their main editorials peopel always call them out for being contrived when it could be a totally honest addition - meanign those albums outside of the standard 20 will get swept to the side by the regular readerships and overlooked by the peopel who do like them because they're too busy sniping the other 18 they have seen elsewhere.
No one can win with lists, but that;s not really the point of them. The point of them is to read loads to give you the chance to check out anything you might have missed.
Start with Dusted, there's bound to be some stuff you have never heard of let alone heard in here: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/features/category/37
same goes for the Left Hand Path's end of year breakdowns and reviews:
and yeah - I haven't finished mine, but when I do it will be The Best, obviously.
*shakes head* and the DiS list is best. I got a feeling, though, the DiS user poll will even more closely align to my stellar and unreproachable taste.
we could all submit a list of our favourite lists and then someone could produce a list of the best lists.
simply because it pissed so many people off.
It's a meta-list.
that's great actually - not sure i'd agree on some of their hip-hop etc. but yeh, they've included some of the ones i wanted to see eg. idea fire company. (no matana roberts/niggas with guitars/sean mccann/wadada leo smith/peter evans which would all be in my list.)
have you heard amateur doubles?
don't know how i missed that new michel chion!?
but that's probably because they aren't open on sunday any more so CG and my weekly pilgrimage there via burger king has not been happening so often :(
From experimedia's preview of it it sounds really rather brilliant.
anyway, that list covers some really good stuff(Yves De May, Heatsick, DJ Diamond, ADR!) Have you listened to Fourth World Magazine? The Volcanic Tongue preview made it sound like something that would be up my alley but i'd kind of forgotten about it.

cos I had a 0.3% say in it, it was democratic and represented the tastes of a bunch of people who I like to read their thoughts of on a regular basis. There's tons on the list for me to keep investigating for months yet.
Talking about lists of lists and the such like I'm sure people have seen these but here are the aggregates of best of lists across multiple publications and websites:
Any Decent Music: http://www.anydecentmusic.com/articles/top-10.aspx
Interestingly, the DiS Users's lists shares 12 and 11 of their top 20 respectively with these aggregated lists. Is this a consensus of quality or averageness averaging itself out?
what a sexy man.
