To split in February they announced on stage tonight. Real shame, great fun live.
Always seemed to be a band that would just go on forever.
I went to uni in Egham about five years ago and most of the band lived there or thereabouts, so I must have seen them about 30-40 times. Remember a particularly great show in the middle of winter at some venue in Guildford that sold Chinese food (when it was ready they came and found in you. Great stuff). I know the band kinda moved on from this sound a while ago, but still love Kites like I would a small furry animal that I'd taught to swear.
Its a shame they never really got the attention I thought they deserved, but they gave it their best shot and live they were always great fun!
What were my favourite songs of theirs you say? Well Kites as Daniel said above is sooo good (loved when I saw them not that long ago and they pulled it out of the bag), and I always really loved Even The Comets Sing Along (never could persuade them to do it live though!). Fight Fight of course. Young Persons Guide, Tower Tower, Boy with the beak, splutterheart.... so many!
Also just realised I never got their latest album. Shame on me for contributing to their demise. Going to buy it Right. Now.
RIP you beautiful cats you.
When I was like 14 my band played a festival at an all-girls school. After we played I sat outside our 'dressing room' talking to two guys from Clone Of Mel, and they told me I looked and sounded like Chris Conley from Saves The Day.
Was it Rafters at William Perkins? Those gigs were great. What was your band called? We all love Saves the day so that was a massive compliment, I know some people might not see it as one!
Your username is a Misterhall reference right?
Yes Rafters! I'd totally forgotten what it was called. My band was called Minus 8 and we were fairly rubbish and split up like a year later. And I'm sure I took it as a compliment at the time so cheers haha. And yes, only one other person on this site has ever picke up on the Misterhall reference in six years which makes me a bit sad.
I was listening to If I'd Had an Atlas for the first time in ages this morning as well, weird.
Motherwhale never grabbed me the same way that all of their other stuff did but they deserved to be much much bigger than they were. Splutterheart is a masterpiece (and I never got to see it live) and pretty much everything off their 2nd, 3rd and 4th releases are wonderful.
I'll miss them.
Think there're some other projects come out of it though. Hopefully good stuff.
ANYWAY, it doesn't change that last night was awesome fun.
Have put up a video of A Boy called Haunts from this show at http://youtu.be/rfXSgP8-2dY
Thanks a lot for the kind words above, some really nice things said.
We'll be organising a big farewell show for the new year and might play a couple of the tracks Toby mentioned.
Glad I've still got one of their EPs though. Good times!
If I had an atlas was possibly my favourite album of last year. Well, wishing them the best of luck, especially Ben in Japan(?!?!?!)
at the Bull and Gate, Kentish Town. With our good friends A Genuine Freakshow and one more to be confirmed.
Here's where there's tickets: www.wegottickets.com/bullandgate/event/152228
Here's a Facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/234355296642015/
Also we're taking a vote of what songs people want to hear at this show. At the moment Splutterheart is joint first eeeeeek!
This Brilliant Sky is a wasted vote by the way.
and having a little moment. still one of my favourite pieces of music ever.
Them lot This Town Needs Guns, Forward Russia, Meet Me In St. Louis, Youthmovies, etc... all put in a good show for indie in the mid '00s and for that I'm thankful. Cheers.
Our last show is on Friday at the Bull and Gate, Kentish Town. We've got A Genuine Freakshow and Lime Headed Dog supporting.
Also we're cheekily putting out a compilation CD with our favourite tracks on it. You get a rarities download with it too! Function Records are putting it out over here:
Following that we'll be in Europe for 2 weeks before we're completely dead.
Would be lovely to see any of you lot at the shows.
