Pixies - Caribou from Come On Pilgrim.
Mercury Rev - Chasing A Bee from Yerself Is Steam
but WIF is pretty unstoppable
stuck a peanut in your backbone
I really, truly do.
Cue saying one of about 30 different songs.
A quiet sort of Pixies song? Are you some kind of FUCKING MENTALIST? That's like picking 'Dumb' as the best Nirvana song.
Have you heard this song? He screams like he's just woken up next to you Theo! (/bants)
but compared to stuff like Tame or Debaser it's a quiet one.
YOU JUST DON'T DESERVE THEM.
I think it's called Doolittle
Bald men fighting.
I was just doing a bit of drunk late night psuedo-trolling. Thought it would make a good thread and figured I should start with a controversial choice.
The point I was trying to make in that post above is Pixies have about 30 brilliant songs, it would be impossible to choose.
Caribou is one of the best ones though, what a way to start your first EP!
and at least ten better songs including b-sides from that era.
She Bangs The Drums
Made Of Stone
I Am The Resurrection
This Is The One
(OK only five, bad maths)
Where Angels Play
(and 8 in total, sorry)
So in conclusion, ninth best song they did. Unless you count Fools Gold. Which I don't. But you might.
What the world is waiting for
which is better than Fool's Gold and most things really
'Standing Here' in the b-sides list as well, which is one of their greatest songs.
but that song is epic
I'm sure we've done this before.
From EP one. Ace.
Patrick Wolf - Wolf Song (if you don't include Prelude, which isn't really much of a song.
Otherwise I'd completely agree with you
EPs and albums
Thenceforth comes the slide.
but I agree... it could be their best song... maybe
If there was a planet full of wrong people, and they all lived in the city of Wrongness and their emperor was Lord Wrong, well, you probably wouldn't be him, but you'd be in the upper echelons of the landed gentry of Wrongness at least.
but still, agreed
from Sun Bronzed Gods ep. Really their only good song...but MY GOD what a great song!!
but yeah, they pretty much had shot their load after the first ep.
but it's my favourite Smiths song
it's certainly no more contentious than the OP
But as a statement of intent, it's quite breathtaking.
Sugarcubes - Traitor
All down hill after that.
Never got anywhere near the heights of that. Musically, anyway...
Used to be a massive fan of The Libertines back 2002-2003. Can't really understand it now. But that is still a fantastic track.
Though my opinion of what is their best song varies from time to time.
Although I'm fairly ignorant of hip hop. Was that their first album...?
And it's a good answer!
and I raise you Wolves, Lower the first track on Chronic Town - for me, the best song they ever did. Though the first two albums are nearly almost as good, we're talking 0.01 not as good...
But I think Stutter is probably their best track.
Kind of a cheat, that one, given every Fugazi song is as good as every other one, i.e. 193 out of 10.
End Hits was there first record and you had said Break. Nevermind, you're right. They're all good. Fugazi rules.
rules of the thread.
Pay attention man.
It was an EP so it counts. BUT it was also the FIRST album (even though it was two eps together) so it STILL counts.
And it's Fugazi. The first song on Repeater is also fucking brilliant in any case.
and maybe Belle and Seb, The State I Am In
B$B is the best HotS tune. and there are a fair few others before you get to TBA.
Not me though
But I think I prefer Alberto Balsam, Flim, Avril 14th and - from the same album - Heliosphan.
That album blew my 14 yo mind the first time I heard it
21st Century Schizoid Man
was thinking I'd have to school you motherfuckers but well done drummerdave
is that it's incorrect. 'Red' alone pisses all over '21st Century Schizoid Man'.
someone who'd only ever heard one King Crimson album (and their most famous one at that) to give.
them live a few times ya stoopid cheeky cunt!!
But I still stand by my previous comment.
And do you honestly think it's better than all of, say:
Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part 2;
The Night Watch;
They're good. Starless and Discipline are great, even. However, 21CSM was first played to me when I was about 8 and it's absolutely goddamn lodged in my brain as some kind of musical paragon. Song of the 60's.
(Red never really did so much for me but I have to hear it again.)
I say Frank Ferdinand (Jacqueline)
...but the first Franz album is still a fucking great record.
Can't quite go against Take Me Out but Jacqueline is an amazing track. The musical equivalent of a quiet pint that ends up in a coke-showered strip-club
is the correct answer
famous blue raincoat
is my favourite Suede song.
Is the only one I can be bothered to make a case for
First album, side one, track one. It was all downhill from there.
or is Is This It the first track?
on The Modern Age
a speeded up, more live sounding version im sure..
Well this is awfully embarrassing.
*gives indie point sulkily*
Not sure if I believe it, but it is a good song.
i wouldnt say its their best, thats probably down to overexposure though.
you have to go and ruin it.
I love the first three Ramones albums start to finish, but I reckon Blitzkreig Bop is one of the most perfect things ever recorded by anyone, so I'm sticking with my answer.
my apologies. they do have a lot of perfection in that back catalougue though. their cover of Baby I Love You never fails to get my toosh shaking
It's top 5 for me. But it's no Music For A Forgotten Future
and is better and all
Difficult isn't it? The lead tracks off Gravity Grave, She's A Superstar and Storm in Heaven were all quality. But wasn't All In Mind the first one, which is not their best (if good).
Looking on Wikipedia it counts All in the Mind, She's a Superstar and Gravity Grave as singles, with the Verve EP then being the first proper release.
Gravity Grave is the first track on that, though it's not the 9 minute version so technically not the best version. Hmm...
so I'm sticking with my guns on this one. I can edit Wikipedia to back me up if that'll make you feel better.
That's the thing with Verve, She's A Superstar was two ten minutes tracks and regarded as a single. Surely it's an EP?
And spent too long thinking about oasis.
Forth wasn't really a return to form.
not enough whole-band jamming
The best thing they ever did is the riff on Star Sail, closely followed by the riff of So It Goes.
Well, that, or Talking with Fireworks or I Became A Prostitute. But I think this takes it.
Do I win £5?
As that's not really the point I wanted to get across. Not that I really wanted to get a point across. Usually longer EPs and albums are the first release a band puts a bit of thought into. First single is usually the best song off your demo backed with two songs you probably aren't gonna use for your album.
Obviously it depends from band to band, - for instance if it's a band of musicians that have been around for a while in another band then quite often their first single of the new band can be considered their best song, as years of graft have gone into it (see Fugazi, Pearl Jam ... ummm ... Kaiser Chiefs?) but if it's a young band with their first ever release it's often any old shit (So Young by The Stone Roses for instance) though Petrol by Ash is a particularly good song.
Guess I wanted it to have a bit of context. The big song that bands chose to open their debut album with - an album which for a lot of bands is make or break. Then see which bands never managed to better it in the eyes of the DiSer. But I mean Pixies, Fugazi, Archers Of Loaf - these are three of my favourite bands, just happened that their first songs on their first releases were particularly awesome, but they kept up the high standard.
Quite interesting to read people's opinions, I think.
Not that I don't like the rest of it, but it is a stone cold steven austin fact.
'Head Like a Hole'.
Rock 'n' Roll Star said all they needed to say. And gloriously!
It's an obscure one, you wouldn't have heard of it.
I'm not sure they do, but Davidian is one of their best songs
'Cold Vein' is all kinds of amazing, all the way through, but the first taste is the best.
they only did one album so it's kinda lame posting them here
but yeah, *what* an album
..the arguments on this thread are spectacular.
Go back and read every disagreement with a mouth-breathed wheeze at the beginning and middle of its first sentence.
