Damn shame...... they were Cool as Fuck!
but by the time the 2nd album rolled along I had gotten a bit bored of them... it was a neat idea though but one that (rightfully) shouldn't of lasted more then a couple of albums
to refer to a band as split when the entire personnel are together in another band.
I guess it just means they won't be oding the Grinderman schtick anymore. Weren't they in the middle of a tour though?
Second Grinderman album was pretty weak, and as mentioned further up the thread, they'd got a bit boring, so probably best to knock it on the head.
Thing is, Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld have now both left the Bad Seeds, I think partly in response to Warren Ellis' growing influence on the band. The last Bad Seeds album, although good, was weird - seeing the songs live it was pretty much just Cave, Ellis, the bassist and the fat drummer (ie Grinderman) playing for the most part, with the other three incredibly talented musicians reduced to maracas. Change is always a good thing, I guess, but Mick Harvey's work on the latest PJ Harvey album shows he's still 'got it', whereas Ellis' work on the last Grinderman album showed that maybe he hasn't quite 'got it'. And working with Ellis seems to encourage Cave towards self-parody. I guess it all comes down to working out who was responsible for Nocturama and kick them out.
I don't know, don't care about Grinderman, wait and see what the next Bad Seeds album is like.
It's a great album. Although, I haven't actually heard the first album to compare it with.
and for the record, I think it's every bit as good as the first.
As much as I still respect him I fear he's pretty much been claimed by the Mojo reading set now.
a short term blast rather than a full time band. The first album was killer the second didn't really have the same punch.
I'd rather hear more Bad Seeds if I'm honest.
they blew everybody else out of the water..
it was an enormous critical success and everybody was raving about it on here. I don't see how it's any different then the first and that single was massive.
nothing weak about the second album ....saw them play the Enmore here in Sydney early in the year...phenomenal...fast forward 9 months and I caught them again last week doing a small side show.....looked like they all had had enough of each other...very different atmosphere....I dont think Cave even glanced at Ellis,,let alone drag his scraggily arse across the stage by his beard like he did 9 months previous.... rock n roll mofo's...
Heathen Child was a massive song of awesomeness.
Hope this means Cave will finally release a decent album, it's been nearly 11 years now.
I'd argue he's only released one non-decent album. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus was especially great.
.... and will definitely listen to both well into the future, but there's no doubt that a lot of Grinderman 2 would sit comfortably alongside Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! Job done really.
Probably pretty rich, seems healthy, gets away with being fantastically rude to everyone, has an unassailable back catalogue and is still cool as fuck in spite of the fact that musically speaking he's now an establishment figure, could release an album of his bath farts and people would either revere it as an avant-garde masterpiece or dismiss it as indulgent shite and his response either way would be to ironically raise one eyebrow & fuck off to the Maldives for a few weeks.
