Part of the Original Albums Series. Bargain!
Though shame it doesn't include Blue Valentine as well for say £15, as I think that's his best 70s album, and I guess anyone who buys this might not bother to get that as well.
But although these early records are a bit cheesy at times, they are full of good songs and a great buy at this price.
Nighthawks at the Diner is great fun.
for a tenner from Zavvi.com I think. Not bragging or owt, just they might have it for even cheaper. Bargain! First album's a bit ropey and I doubt I'll ever have the patience to sit through the whole of Nighthawks again, but the other three are brilliant and more than worth the price.
Or are there better starting points?
and probably isn't the best way to start off. I think most people agree that Rain Dogs is his mid-period masterpiece, and at £1.50 on Amazon Marketplace you really can't go wrong. Enjoy!
also the best of the island years comp that's on Spotify is aces:
But I'd say all albums before this from Closing Time to Heartattack and Vine have some absolutely classic songs on them - mainly piano based, with the occasional guitar one thrown in. Lyrically there aren't many who come close to 70s Waits.
I actually prefer his 70s stuff to the later stuff about pirates and dwarves, but like both!
It was Bone Machine wot did it for me. I don't know if that's the normal way in though - maybe I was just in the right mood (I'd just been to a funeral). Small Change is in that pack and that's probably a fairly easy one to like.
I'd definitely recommend the set, but the music in it is fairly different to his later stuff. Less "barky". Just don't get put off by Closing Time.
And still my favourite.
Bad As Me (this one is actually a pretty good starting point, since it marries both early and later career styles into a very immediate and accessible whole).
Any particular reasons?
Still some excellent songs on there though.
Was the first album of his I listened to so I may be a bit biased. Proved to be the gateway to many of his other albums but this is the one I come back to most often. This thread has prompted me to do so once more.
Ol' 55 is a gem of a song.
Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones would be my next two favourites, in that order.
..it seems. That album got me into him, and is still my favourite along with Orphans. Poor Edward, Flowers Grave, Kommiensuspadt (?).. just brilliant.
But when I listen to his early stuff I have to admit I just grab my Used Songs best of rather than the full albums nowadays. it's all good though.
Probably not though. Can't see what the fuss is about him, never have. Is he one of those people it's cool to say you like but don't actually like ?
that only douchebags fail to enjoy x
He's saying you're a douchebag. There's an e, y'see. Douchebag. Like that, yeah?
when actually I like him very much. To me that suggests you're a duouhchbag or however you want to spell it.
Man, I sure PWNED you.
then how can you pass comment on the "fuss about him"?
Surely you would have to listen to his material first.
genius.. Maybe I should listen some more. As for the comment about people liking him because he's cool, I stand by that, he definately falls into the category. Thats not to say everyone is being a try hard though, I'm sure you do really like him. Not so sure about questionmark though, the lady doth protest a bit much as they say..
