They were alright. It was pretty much sold out. The audience was 98% comprised of odious chino and boat shoe wearing assflaps.
The last two points could be because it was in Australia though.
Where did you see them in Australia?
Once at Splendour last year which was pretty good fun.
Second time my friend won a comp for two tickets to any of their shows in May. Was going to see them in Perth because it coincided with a uni/work trip but that got canned so we went to the Brisbane show instead.
Best band since The Smiths
Srsly, tho, Portamento's a pretty good album
seem to actually embrace the 'hipster' tag rather than strive to get away from it
It seems a little more genuine than the obvious, awkward, and contrived persona of 'Lana Del Rey'. The Drums acknowledge that image plays a large part in their music. I've not read many interviews with the band. But I do know that they thought up the name, the typeface, and the general sound of the band before they'd even recorded. Basically, a lot of bands have done this. Every band has an image.
Is up on YouTube. Lots of bands' sets are, in good quality. Dunno if that's general knowledge around these parts or not.
Their "Summertime EP" was amazing. I was slightly disappointed with teir self- titled debut. Sure, it had some great, heartbreaking pop songs on it but it wasn't the record that I think everyone expected them to make. I aven't heard all of "Portamento", only "Money" which was alright but nowhere near as good as some of their previous stuff, and some other song that I can't remember the name of, which was awful.
then what was represented on their first album. Thought it had some great songs but was pretty flimsy and underdeveloped in parts. When Portamento came out and everyone called it a re-hash of the first I didn't hold any expectations for it. When I finally bought it I thought I was listening to a different album then everyone else, songs were sharper, darker and the album had real depth. It was everything the first one should have been. And yet everyone shit all over it and they've been pretty much abandoned and the album flopped. Strange.
Way dark, the new album
I know it's not you saying these things, it's just I'm shocked
I didn't even know about Portamento 'til I saw it on the new release rack and haven't read up on it much
Wait, they where the ones that sounded like the bluetones remixing klaxons right?

I'd quite like to hear that.
that used really eerie dark synths that were using portamento slides and stuff. if anyone could link me it, that would be great.
