As it puts songs in pairs, apart from the first and last ones:
Relationship-y songs: On Your Own Again/The World's Strongest Man
Slow, sad songs: Angel of Ashes/Boy Child
War songs: Hero of the War/The Old Man's Back Again
Pick-me-up songs: Duchess/Get Behind Me
That's roughly how I see it. My run of three would be The Old Man's Back Again -> Duchess -> Get Behind Me.
picked up this album recently, got totally consumed by it for 2 weeks. Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs... didn't expect such a silly title to be hiding such an incredible tune.
It's like a bomb going off. Sadly, it set a standard that Gangsta Rap never quite lived up to. Apart from maybe the first three tracks off "Life After Death"...
---it set a standard that Gangsta Rap never quite lived up to---
I'd have to say that this is the one I agree with the most. Absolutely amazing start to an album. I can remember the first time I ever heard this. Had been hearing loads about them but hadn't actually heard any tracks. Was visiting a friend for the weekend and we'd stayed up all night smoking ourselves silly. At one point he put this on and to say it cut through the fog would be something of an understatement...
This weekend just gone I've only listened to 2 albums on heavy repeat and it's the two you've posted in this thread. ODB around 6/7 times and Biggie nearer to 10.
I agree with the ODB but not on the B.I.G, reply below.
Similarly, I was thinking this subject matter about 3 weeks or so ago about The Black Album: Dirt off your shoulder - Threat - 99 Problems - Public Service Announcement, conveniently forgetting the Eminem abomination in the middle of them which I always skip.
Listened again a few times after your admonishment. Strong, not saying I'm wrong but a better sample like some of the other tracks and that would be elevated to massive tune status. Lyrics are pretty f'in ace. Ok, I'm wrong ggrrrrrrrrrr.
just drove my brother to the airport singing along terribly to read music/speak spanish, what a fucking record.
YEAH ONE MORE MOUTHFUL AND WE WILL BE HAPPY THEE-EEEN
Kanye West's All of the Lights -> Monster -> So Appalled is pretty good too.
Like Eating Glass -> Helicopter -> Positive Tension is still great.
Surprised at how rare it is for me to love 3 songs in a row on an album. Had a quick glance at some of my favourite albums but i'd still come across a track that was an obvious weakness compared to the other 2
Rescue - Villiers Terrace - Read it in Books
Show of Strength - With a Hip - Over the Wall
The Cutter - Back of Love - My White Devil
Thorn of Crowns - The Killing Moon - Seven Seas
because I couldn't figure out why I have a different tracklisting! The LP version has Pictures on My Wall in place of Read it in Books, which isn't a bad compromise tbh
Two Snakes > Hidden World > Manqueller Man > Blaze of Glory, take your pick
Fugazi (loads of these)
Argument: Full Disclosure > Epic Problem > Life and Limb & Strangelight > Oh > Ex-Spectator
End Hits: Foreman's Dog > Appregiator > Guildford Fall
I'm thinking 3rd Planet - Gravity Rides Everything - Dark Centre of the Universe. Does it for me every time. Waynes World head banging when it rocks on ....Universe.
Get me, the expert! Thanks again. Hope you're doing good man.
A Heat Rash In The Shape Of The Show Me State; Or, Letters From Me To Charlotte
The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future
There Is A Flag. There Is No Wind
I suppose that’s quite a personal list, but whatever, The Wrens make probably the most goosepimply beautiful music in the world, and Thirteen Grand has pretty much redundanced the rest of the indie rock genre, so yeah, that.
This is a quality thread. Really makes you realise how only certain albums are strong enough to carry three blinders in a row. I think the posts citing whole albums are missing the point a bit.
Shine a Light -> Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts -> I'll Believe in Anything. I love the rest of that album to death, but this stretch alone could justify all indie rock ever made.
Fuzzy Logic - God! > Fuzzy Birds > Something 4
Radiator - Herman > Chucapacbras > Torra
Guerrilla - Turning Tide > Nothern Lites > Night Vision
Mwng - Y Teimlad > Sarn Helen > Gwreiddiau
Rings - Miniature > No Sympathy > Juxtapozed
Phantom P - Sex, War > Piccolo Snare > Venus and Serena
Love Kraft - Frequency > Oi Frango > Psyclone
Hey Venus! - Neo consumer > Into the Night > Baby ate my 8ball
DD/LY - Cardiff in the sun > The very best.. > Helium Hearts
Agree totally on the first three on Thirteen Tales: that's an incredible run, and makes the rest of the album sound lame by comparison.
Come Down! This is hard, as there are so many quality tunes. The first three doesn't work for me, as I don't like Minnesoter (never like the Dandys' country stylings). Shame, as Be-In is tremendous and Boys Better is one of their best singles.
However, I Love You - Last Junkie - Everyday/Holiday - Good Morning is an awesome run, as is Green - Cool As Kim Deal - Hard On For Jesus, and also Orange - I Love You - Last Junkie. It's a good, well-sequenced album is what I'm saying.
That's all of electro in a nutshell right there, and Computer Love is one of their finest tracks.
and on The Man-Machine:
- The Model
- Neon Lights
- The Man-Machine
Gets their range in three tracks:
The Model, one of their songs about beauty and appearance, like Showroom Dummies or Hall of Mirrors...
Neon Lights, one of their 'songs of wonder' like Kometenmelodie 2 or Europe Endless...
The Man-Machine, the key concept title track like Autobahn/Trans-Europe Express/Radioactivity/Computer World/Tour de France/Techno Pop or Electric Cafe...
Rhymer's Only Room, The Velvet Ant, Son Of A Gun, Rifle Eyes, Dead Dogs Two
And I'm pretty keen on Pop Song and Keen Teen Skip too, but they're not on the same level. If it has to be just 3, then Son of a Gun through to Dead Dogs Two. But what an album. Trails off near the end, but a hell of a middle.
I'm disappointed in you all for not bringing this up before now.

Aerodynamic
Digital Love
Add on Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and Crescendolls and I'd call it one of the best five track runs ever.
this is what i was going to say
i've grown to love the second half too, but if the whole album was as strong as those first 5.....jesus.
True, though I think if the whole album was like the first five tracks
I'd have exploded by the end
The movie made me appreciate the 2nd half more
But those first five are untouchable.
Emergency & I by the Dismemberment Plan
You Are Invited > Gyroscope > The City
love the last 3 on change as well
Power > All of the Lights > Monster
From MBDTF
All Of The Lights (Interlude)
inbetween Power and All of the Lights. Technically a separate track.
I'd have to say
the best of the beatles
I would go for
Cemetry Gates
Bigmouth Strikes Again
Boy With The Thorn In His Side
but you could literally take any combination of three songs off that album and it would work
Better still, the start of Hatful of Hollow:
William it was Really Nothing
What Difference Does it Make
These Things Take Time
or you could add the next three tracks:
How Soon is Now?
Handsome Devil
Hand in Glove
I know it's a compilation, but not in a greatest hits sense - all those songs were recorded over the space of about nine months
'Tis a great album, but my run of three tracks would definitely be:
Still Ill
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
This Night Has Opened My Eyes
Have to turn the tape over after HKIMN, but I think it still counts.
From Scott 4:
Boy Child
Hero of the War
The Old Man's Back Again (Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime)
This album's a weird one
As it puts songs in pairs, apart from the first and last ones:
Relationship-y songs: On Your Own Again/The World's Strongest Man
Slow, sad songs: Angel of Ashes/Boy Child
War songs: Hero of the War/The Old Man's Back Again
Pick-me-up songs: Duchess/Get Behind Me
That's roughly how I see it. My run of three would be The Old Man's Back Again -> Duchess -> Get Behind Me.
The Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah
Help on the Way
Slipknot!
Franklin's Tower
I Don't Want To Get Over You --> Come Back from San Francisco --> The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side
or
Dominion/Mother Russia --> Flood I --> Lucretia My Reflection

Godless; Mohammed; Neitzche
Murray Street - Sonic Youth
The Empty Page; Disconnection Notice; Rain On Tin
Primary Colours - Eddy Current Suppression Ring
Memory Lane; Sunday's Coming; Wrapped Up
BRMC - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Love Burns; Red Eyes And Tears; Whatever Happend To My Rock 'n' Roll (Punk Song)
All of these open albums.

Can I Live
You're cheating on the Black Album one pal, cheater.
from Nick Cave and the bad seeds 'tender prey'
The Mercy Seat
Up Jumped the Devil
Deanna
Biggy 'Ready To Die'
The What - Juicy - Everyday Struggle
If ya dont know... now you know.
Nah, don't rate The What.
For me it's Things Done Changed - Gimme the Loot - Machine Gun Funk.
Probably rivals my picks yeah,
but... BUT, I just don't even know what to say to someone who doesn't rate The What, that's just plain irresponsible.
You say 'words not beats'
Listened again a few times after your admonishment. Strong, not saying I'm wrong but a better sample like some of the other tracks and that would be elevated to massive tune status. Lyrics are pretty f'in ace. Ok, I'm wrong ggrrrrrrrrrr.

I'd also say any run of 3 off Enter Wu

Actually, I'd have gone for
Underpass
Metal Beat
No One's Driving
Joy division - Closer
take yer pick
OK:
Heart and Soul
24 Hours
The Eternal
or start with 24 Hours and stick Decades on the end. Love the whole record, but the second side is truly amazing.
That second combination was exactly what I was going to say.
It's like death and rebirth. Something uneathly and beautiful. Never been an album like it and there never will be.
It's a perfect use of the two sides of a vinyl album
Side 1 - brilliant but jarring and harrowing
Side 2 - Still dark, but somehow uplifting and life affirming
Altogether and almost perfect work of art.
North American Scum, Someone Great, All My Friends
obv.
*Someone Great, All My Friends, Us V Them
Waits
Hang Down Your Head - Rain Dogs - Time.
Or:
Johnsburg, Illinois
16 Shells from a 30.6
Town with no Cheer
Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
Worms Of The Senses/Faculties Of The Skull - Liberation Frequency - The Deadly Rhythm
New Noise - Refused Party Program - Protest Song '68
I almost said this album, but I couldn't choose which 3 to go for
Possibly the last three. Certainly as strong a closing pair as any I've heard. Or maybe Summerholidays through New Noise. There's just too many.
Those I've named are just my own personal highlights.
Truth be told the whole album is awesome!!!
Vampire Weekend
Mansard Roof - Oxford Comma - A-Punk
Surely the obvious answer is OK Computer
Or does this count as derailing the thread? I'd probably go with Paranoid Android - Subterranean Homesick Alien - Exit Music.
My OK Computer combination would be...
Climbing Up The Walls
No Surprises
Lucky
Yeah, I almost went with that one.
Fleet foxes
Your Protector
Meadowlarks
Blue Ridge Mountains
Blue Ridge Mountains is criminally underrated
I've always been a fan of Death From Above's
Cold War
You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
Pull Out
Dunno about best ever
But three excellent rock ones are...
Arcarsenal - Pattern Against User - One Armed Scissor
No One Knows - First It Giveth - A Song For The Dead
Sludgefeast - The Lung - Raisans
Throwing it as a lot of my others have been covered...
See No Evil / Venus / Friction - Marquee Moon
The Rainbow -> Eden -> Desire
One side and 21 minutes of world-shattering perfection
How could I forget this
YHF.
War On War - Jesus etc - Ashes Of American Flags
Royal Trux - Cats and Dogs
Skywood Greenback Mantra
Turn Of The Century
Up The Sleeve
panasonic youth> sunshine the werewolf> highway robbery
search & destroy> gimme danger> your pretty face is going to hell
revolution blues> for the turnstiles> vampire blues

Yep...
Came here to say exactly this. Brutal three-song run. Even better when you throw Jesus Christ Pose in at the end.
spoonman/limo wreck/day i tried to live
would be my SG run of three, although only because 'spoonman' is preferable to 'kickstand'. other two are righteous
if 'face pollution' didn't exist, slaves and bulldozers through somewhere would be tops
OBVIOUS, but:
1. everything in it's right place
2. kid a
3. the national anthem
just flows better than anything else i've ever heard.
what about the first 4?
plus How To Disappear Completely?

Judy is a Punk
The best first three songs from a debut album ever?
White Pony surely needs a mention?
Feliciteria > Digital Bath > Elite
Or
Knife Prty > Korea > Passenger > Change
Worship and Tribute deserves a mention too. Take your pick from:
Gillette Calvacade > Trailer Park Jesus > Two Tabs > Convectuoso
Good call on Worship and Tribute!

Except I actually like to enjoy listening to music ;D
Just tricking, I love Confield as well, was just a bit of a drag at first.

Echo and the Bunnymen
Seven Seas
My Kingdom
Ocean Rain
One from each of the first four Bunnymen albums -
Rescue - Villiers Terrace - Read it in Books
Show of Strength - With a Hip - Over the Wall
The Cutter - Back of Love - My White Devil
Thorn of Crowns - The Killing Moon - Seven Seas
I was kicking myself leaving out The Killing Moon
but Ocean Rain is such a perfect closer I couldn't go without it.
I think my Crocodiles one is pretty near perfect
But you could pick almost any three tracks from Porcupine or Ocean Rain and not go far wrong
It is, although I got really confused for a while
because I couldn't figure out why I have a different tracklisting! The LP version has Pictures on My Wall in place of Read it in Books, which isn't a bad compromise tbh

In My Time of Dying
I went to check out Led Zeppelin for this thread
and was fascinated that I couldn't find a three-track run in their entire catalogue that didn't feature a song that I have serious problems with.
Closest I could manage was
Achilles Last Stand
For Your Life
Royal Orleans
... but only the first of those three is a real classic
I can't go the distance with In My Time of Dying
Bonham is insane on it, but overall it's just too long & flailing & indulgent for this little black duck
The Wanton Song, now there's a Physical Graffiti track I can get behind
Fugazi
Merchandise -> Blueprint -> Sieve Fisted Find
Wire - Pink Flag
Three Girl Rhumba

I suppose that’s quite a personal list, but whatever, The Wrens make probably the most goosepimply beautiful music in the world, and Thirteen Grand has pretty much redundanced the rest of the indie rock genre, so yeah, that.

But yeah it has already been mentioned...
Not that random
This is a quality thread. Really makes you realise how only certain albums are strong enough to carry three blinders in a row. I think the posts citing whole albums are missing the point a bit.
Wolf Parade
Shine a Light -> Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts -> I'll Believe in Anything. I love the rest of that album to death, but this stretch alone could justify all indie rock ever made.

The Beast and Dragon, Adored
The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine
I Turn My Camera On
Best three-track run of their career? The answer is yes.
Chuck My Mathematical Mind on the end there too, why don't you.
Challenger: tracks 2-4 on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Though you could cut a convincing argument out of any of the first seven tracks of Gimme Fiction.
Dandy Warhols? Yes please

Brilliant three opening tracks to Entertainment!

Manics - Gold Against The Soul
The first three tracks are great, this is basically what got me into the Manics. The rest of the LP is pretty shit though to be fair.

Pretty much ANY three consecutive tracks on that album
Kraftwerk - Computer World
- Numbers
- Computer World 2
- Computer Love
Nice.
I agree
In fact most Kraftwerk's albums having a quite short length they're actually a Best Run of All Tracks On An Album.
cLOUDDEAD's Ten has a run of 5 perfect tracks:
Rhymer's Only Room, The Velvet Ant, Son Of A Gun, Rifle Eyes, Dead Dogs Two
And I'm pretty keen on Pop Song and Keen Teen Skip too, but they're not on the same level. If it has to be just 3, then Son of a Gun through to Dead Dogs Two. But what an album. Trails off near the end, but a hell of a middle.
I'm disappointed in you all for not bringing this up before now.
Tindersticks
Jism
Piano Song
Tye-Die
Tucked away so easy to miss. Raindrops follows those three and is amazing too.
