Which ones from the list would you recommend yourself?
Are there any missing that i should listen to?
One of my favorites of the year.
who I insist on calling Nun's laughter, rather than what I imagine is the desired way.
Things like that amuse me.
Oh and the list is missing Hate Eternal.
so I'll be checking out what else 2011 had to offer. Aside from the Wolves in the Throne room record, it's good to see Wolvhammer getting a mention.
I guess it's not strictly classed as a metal record and more sludge/doom but I think Weedeater's 'Jason...The Dragon' would be a worthy inclusion.
today is the day
really need to get that ash borer record, really surprised anyone rates the new autopsy tbh. though it was bunk.
Weekend Nachos at 40 though. <3 Great album.
Rwake - quality.
I remember hearing the Indian one at the beginning of the year, forgot all about it tbh.
thought it was an orange goblin smooth stoner sort of thing for some reason, probably that album cover. pretty fucking ace, like the vocals.
you'll maybe dig the new hull one, they're the tits at the gritty mountain man rock kind of thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfs8LlWmbew the higher pitched guy has a great voice.
Good riffs as well.
No Mastodon? Hipster try-hards.
Not a problem with that, but I don't think they're metal anymore.
Things I'd include: Aosoth, Book Of Sand, Ensorcelor, Fell Voices, Oranssi Pazuzu & Petrychor
that's a good start. Thanks :)
It's pretty well known that Brandon Stosuy, who compiled the list, is a huge metal fan. He used to do the occasional metal update on Stereogum and started their 'Haunting The Chapel' feature. He's only recently rejoined the Pitchfork staff (to cover metal almost exclusively, by the looks of it). Given that it's written with only one person's input it seems a lot more personal and you get a sense of his passion for/knowledge of the genre. By comparison, when they cover hip-hop I'd guess some people feel like it's as a concession to the writer's broader tastes (probably isn't, though).
...it's just squarely focussed on one particular facet of metal. That it happens to be the most painfully hipster facet of metal is par the course - it's Pitchfork, after all.
in that pitchfork decide to a large extent what metal indie people like, or at least, are exposed to.
battlesoul - lay down thy burdens
tyr - the land of thyrim
vanir - Særimners Kød
decapitated - carnival is forever
amon amarth - sartur rising
opeth - heritage
sjuguttmyra - ferden gar vedere (it's 2 songs but fuck it)
arkona - slovo
folkearth - sons of the north
vintersorg - jordplus
svartstot - maledictus eris
yddrasil - irdbloss
alestorm - back through time
enslaved - the sleeping gods
trollfest - en kvest for den hellige gral
falconer - armod
legend - the pale horse
limp bizkit - gold cobra (yup)
the monsters - monsters
periphery - icarus
rhapsody of fire - from chaos to eternity
emmure - speaker of the dead
anyway, that Svartsot record is great. They've done three great ones in a row. If you like that Suidakra also put out a new one, which I'm only now getting into.
Off Pitchfork's list I really like Altar of Plagues and Wolves in the Throne Room, epecially the former. The Atlas Moth, Ash Borer, Circle of Ouroborus, Deafheaven and Tombs are all on my shopping list. I've only been listening to metal for the last three years so I'm still trying to figure out what I like and what's what genre-wise.
yeah svartsot are the business, sounds like you'd dig most of the stuff on my list if you like that. vanir and yddrasil in particular
I'll definitely check out everything on there I haven't heard yet.
best thing they've done in ages
I'm a long time metal fan but I've been out of touch for some years on what's good in this musical neck of the woods. Seeing this thread and recently listening to some Metallica and Anthrax I'd like to dip my toe back in the water to see what's still rocking in 2011 and enjoy some powerchords.
Can someone recommend me something on this list that I might like?
My tastes are a bit mainstream metal and hard rock so obvs I like Metallica, Mastodon, Isis, QOTSA, Led Zep, Megadeth, Slayer, Maiden, etc. I'm currently wearing a Rainbow Rising t-shirt but don't hold that against me.
Is there a band in 2011 that would rock me out? Muchos cheerios in advance.
rhapsody of fire - heritage
opeth - heritage
tyr - the land of thyrim
not heritage luls
It's nice to see Krallice on there, I think they're probably the best USBM band around right now. The Yob, 40 Watt Sun and Blut Aus Nord records are all amazing, too. Today Is The Day is a glaring omission though, few bands bring THE RAGE like them. Ehnahre are also missing, they're for those of you who like their death-doom with added doses of Weird (anyone?)
There have been a few albums that were released by bands that are kind of... formerly metal, or at least connected in some way, and are still worth getting if you're into interesting music:
Ulver - Wars Of The Roses
Asva - Presences of Absences
Virus - The Agent That Shapes The Desert
P.S. I find Altar of Plagues kind of boring and flat. Sorry.
P.P.S. I have absolutely no fucking idea whether I like Botanist or not
They are pretty underated though, I agree.
but yeah, good band
