The Tragically Hip
Seriously
20 years ago...! I was about ten feet away from the blokes that caught that, everyone mass scrambled to catch it mid air, followed by shrieks when they realised what they were fighting over. They signed my shirt that day <gets stuck in nostalgia trip>
Donita's solo, Jennifer has/had a band called Lime, both worth checking out.
No idea who half these c**ts are though.
the FUCK!?
I stopped reading after numbers 4 & 5
thanks.
Number 1
I honestly have no idea who this is... did I miss something?
She's going to be in loads of 'to watch in 2012' lists, despite not being very good or interesting.
I think NME are just trying to shout FIRST.
She's fucking amazing.
Shut up.
I KNOW WHO SHE IS TOO!!!1
bellend
Paul Epworth
Will be producing her debut so you know it's gonna be good
NME are about 2 years late
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jun/18/new-band-azealia-banks
In what way are Ladytron 'obscure'?
Outside of DiS, they are 'obscure' in pretty much every way.
Nah.
I know who they are, and I haven't heard of anyone.
look up 212 on youtube
She's a rapper/singer/producer. The NME's been hyping her like mad the last few weeks.
Is it me or does 212 sound a bit, well, old fashioned?
Like something from the early 2000s? It's a bit "Peaches fronting the Detroit Grand Pubahs" or something.
she's playing the NME tour next year
I see...
Have you seen how often Noel or Liam has been on the cover lately?
The NME has been rubbish for years...
... but of the very many things that made it so, the 'Cool List' is right at the top, whoever dreamed it up a few years back should be shot. I'm just going to sit here and shake my head for a while, not so much at the names which I couldn't really give a toss about, just at the entire fucking concept.
Oh good, another thread having a go at NME
This is new. WE ALL KNOW IT IS NOT THAT GREAT!!!
NME lists are always a bit dubious...
I never know whether their lists are chosen because of what they actually think they deserve or whether they're just trying to impress hipsters. Although here I think they've actually done a fair job. Azealia banks is certainly an artist to watch, she's brilliant. Very talented and very sexy. Also i wholeheartedly love the inclusion of jarvis, he well and truely deserves to be up there. Honor Titus, Rhys Webb, Ellery roberts and Matt helders also fully deserve to be up there. Pretty decent list from the NME, for once.
Sorry NY Exile, this wasn't actually supposed to be a reply to your comment, I don't know why it has appeared as so.
Quite alright
Also refreshing to see you haven't just gone wahh, wahh, wahh, NME is rubbish look at me and how cool I am by saying how rubbish this and the NME is.
As Crablin says below it will become a very tedious thread with people jumping over each other to mock them
Admittedly, I have sort of a love- hate relationship with The NME. In terms of the music that they feature and promote, it's the nearest ot the music I like and I enjoy listening to. Well the modern music I enjoy listening to anyway. I also think the writers are pretty funny and engaging. However the gripes that I do have with NME is that they get quite a lot wrong, and I think Azealia Banks is the only "new" artist they've promoted that I've actually liked for ages. Also I do question their commitment to being "cool"; sometimes they try too hard I think, and it leads them to making some pretty silly decisions. But yeah, no major hatred for it.
The only one of these that I actually know who it is is Jarvis Cocker
and I'm confused why he's there. Have Pulp reformed or something?
Are you trolling or been living under a rock?
They did a reunion tour over the summer.
Not trolling, just don't read the music press
Unless people mention it on here, I don't know about it.
*awaits another exciting 300 posts on why the NME is stinky*
sigh
if I was 15
I think I'd be more than happy with the Pulp, Wu Lyf, Horrors and Arctic Monkeys inclusions. This list is for kids in their mid-teens just getting into music. I don't see what's so wrong with it.
Well, you can't really argue with that.
Particularly coming from one of the most notoriously indie posters on DiS. Should probably lock this thread now before it swerves off this righteous path and into a terrible ditch.
what does notoriously indie mean
also there was nothing righteous about my post
I said "I don't see what's wrong with it", not "There is nothing wrong with it". Implying it's my personal opinion. Or do I have to write 'IMHO' to get that across?
Calm down Doreen, he was being complimentary
I don't think he was...
I was
in that case
sorry pet! i'm so uptight sometimes.
Rhys Webb...
...is possibly the most uncool cunt I can think of.
Just fucking look at him! What the actual fuck is he doing here?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L3bv3YjcLk
He used to be a photographer for NME though
i hate this
stupid bob thing he does
heh
mr hutchcraft
I don't know who most of these people are.
Which is just as it should be.
Although Jarvis Cocker has never been cool, merely ubiquitous.
212 is a great track. fuiud
I'm not fussed by the NME either way
but this seems a good place to say that Cerebral Ballzy are fucking boring.
Tom Waits for no. 1
shirley
Lol I forgot NME still do this.
remember how they didn't do it the first year the new editor took over
and everyone was like "yeah, go NME, leave the Conor McNicholson years behind!". And then they brought the cool list back the next year. Sigh.
It makes absolutely zero sense for NME to drop The Cool List
The issue in question sells a tonne more than average, and it's the one time of the year NME can guarantee a shedload of free publicity for itself in loads of newspapers, websites, and those shitty 30-second celebrity news bumps on ITV4. Not only that, but its very existence reinforces NME's position as an arbiter of "what's cool" - a typical DiS reader won't think NME has any kind of clout in that department, but DiS?The General Public.
It's their version of the FHM Hottest Women In The World issue - the publisher wouldn't let an editor drop it, even if for some reason they wanted to.
DiS?The General Public should be
DiS [Does Not Equal Symbol] The General Public
That'll teach me to use fancy symbols.
Ellery?
His name is fucking ELLERY
I have no idea who at least three of these people are.
But it's a cool list for a teenagers' music magazine. If they only listed people 30 year olds knew and liked, they'd be doing something wrong.
nah
I mean, that's kind of insulting to the taste/intelligence of teenagers. I started getting into obscure stuff when I was 15, I figure I got lucky...everything is so condescending now, if I was just a few years younger, my adventurous instincts might have been suffocated.
I thought the NME had turned a corner, but they reverted to type at the slightest hint of a lad rock revival. and it's not just them, I mean look at Radio 1...the only good stuff is on after 12, it's a joke. what happened to people in the know being avuncular, rather than just giving kids what they think kids want?
What I said was in no sense insulting to the taste/intelligence of teenagers - you're assuming I was implying their taste is worse than mine.
Objectively it almost certainly isn't. But the fact is most people like different stuff as they get older and different stuff to the generation before them.
All I'm saying is that I, and many other Disers, have now reached an age where it's impossible to criticise what teenagers are listening to without sounding like a stereotypical parent complaining how music was much better in their day and "it's not music, it's noise". Most of us on here are simply too old to be in touch with what kids find cool. It's silly to complain about that.
With regard to your other point, of course Radio 1 and the NME (being music publications/stations run by people around my age) are appalling at giving kids what they think kids want. But I'm pretty damn certain I wouldn't do a better job if I tried to introduce them to my music collection. Teenagers don't want to listen to Momus records and it'd probably disturb me if they did...
I wish someone had recommended I listen to Momus
when I was a teenager.
I'm sure there are still kids out there with pretty weird taste. I fucking hope so, anyway. what gets to me is that Radio 1 in particular has bailed on promises to 'keep it Peel'...I figure that we've finally reached a point where all music is fair game, listen without predjudice to whatever you want. I would have thought that younger folks would have been more inclined to listen this way.
it's a vicious cycle; publications, radio stations, and the like pander to the kids, the kids get less adventurous, then more pandering, then further narrowing...it's important that that someone maintains a kind of musical lawlessness in some
youth-orientated medium.
Alternate list title:
'Most Dumbass Names In Music'.

Who'd like to see 50-11?

ummm......no
Merrill Garbus should be number one
So they can't even be bothered to mention that St Vincent is actually called Annie Clark?!
Jesus. The inclusion of those two morons from Kasabian immediately stinks out any semblance of credibility from the list. Even if Tom Waits, Frank Sinatra, Carlos D, Bob Marley and James fucking Bond were in the top 10, those two would render it pointless.

I'm sure Mr Wire has been in the cool list every year since Richey died.
Nicky Wire is about as cool as SARS
Yeah what about a DiS version
or is that ridiculous?
probably end up being...
1. Trent Reznor

4. Trent...
Stoke on Trent
Trent from Daria
don't know who loads of these people are
i'm over the hill. irrelevant.

I searched Azelia Banks and got this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzEi2nN6zq4
Listening to the original would just ruin it now.
:'D
Oh fuck off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAtIGB2jiOk&feature=related
How can someone with a name like Toddla fucking T
be on a cool list?
Question Time: Name Muscians' Obscure Band
Oh, Jarvis, yeah, Jarvis Cocker. I think I know that one.
Jarvis Cocker (Relaxed Muscle)
No such thing
as a cool list
>2011
>NME even exists
fuck off with your 4chan shite
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4310077#r6415570
fuck off
i'm really great at comebacks
guys hate to break it to some of you
but azealia banks is quite a big name across the board, not just NME. i don't think you realise quite how insular DiS can be compared to most online music communities.
nobody from Glee?
fucking arseholes.
No Professor Green?
Why's Jarvis Cocker Number 2?
Is it 1996 again?
Don't be silly
Jarvis was in Sheffield’s 'Pulp', not the excellent Anticon act 'Why?'
Are they still doing this shit?
It was a bad idea the first year and has been for every year subsequently.
A couple of years ago, NME did a FUTURE OF MUSIC top 50
And number one was Animal Collective, who at the time had just released their 8th studio album. THE FUTURE indeed.
Tbh, I've only actually read NME once. It was on offer in my student's union, and thinking maybe it was time to get over the death of Melody Maker, I took the plunge. It was around the time The Libertines had just gotten huge. It kept saying how The Zutons were at the forefront of the new Shroomadelica movement and every article was full of bragging about how much drugs the author had taken. Thought maybe this isn't the publication for me
."I'm pretty sure at the turn of this century it was the key inspiration for Nathan Barley."
Er, no.
vice and dazed and confused magazine probably
I can't believe I didn't make the list
I mean really NME, what are you thinking
No. 51: Tiresias
Is she really the coolest person, though
Or just the person NME interviewed last? Is the coolest person always the one you met last? I read the NME, and it's only been over the last couple of weeks they've been pushing her...
I just think it's an attempt to pre-empt who'll be included in things like the Critics' Choice and Sound Of... shortlist. I've listened to that 212 track, it's quite good but is that really what people are creaming themselves over these days? The beats sound tired and nondescript, and the rap (though the flow's good) is hardly saying anything that will set the world on fire. Fluff.
But that's got nothing to do with the Cool List.
Good news guys
Azaealia Banks read this thread, and was so concerned about her lack of visibility within white hipster circles that she's done this just for you:

Posted three days ago
So now we're getting replicated links within the same thread.
