Shit bands who clearly influenced really great bands

the_UCA_coil [Edit] [Delete] 50 replies 14:15, 5 November '11

Much more interesting :D

Can't think of any for certain, but I'm pretty sure that Dream Theater handed something down through the cosmic ether to The Mars Volta

      • The Rolling Stones -> The Dandy Warhols

Funny thing is I'm not even joking. Who knew that all boring lifeless trad-rock needed was some shoegaze melancholy?

        :D

        the_UCA_coil | 7 Nov '11, 01:34 | X
        • I think you could make an argument

that shit Pink Floyd influenced the Dandy Warhols...

And, though I really love the first 3 records, it's hard to think of the Dandys as "great".

          oceanRain @the_UCA_coil | 7 Nov '11, 02:01 | X
          • *

I've seen the Dandys 3 times and left early on every occasion. *shrugs* (Zia's boobs, that one time, were terrific for the first 45 minutes, and then, after that, they were just boobies.)

            oceanRain @oceanRain | 7 Nov '11, 02:05 | X
          • It's easy to think of the Dandy's as 'great'.

            Also- Dandy Warhols> Ride

      • Okay, seriously

Ben Weiman once claimed that "...and justice for all" was his favourite album ever, that would imply that Metallica influenced Dillinger Escape Plan....

        AsianVsPredator | 7 Nov '11, 08:43 | X
        • and justice for all

          > everything dillinger escape plan has ever done and arguably any other heavy metal record released.

          horrorbiz @AsianVsPredator | 7 Nov '11, 14:21 | X
          • Despite the rambly song structures and terrible production?

Its not even the best Metallica record

            AsianVsPredator @horrorbiz | 7 Nov '11, 15:21 | X
      • Curve => Garbage

Well, Curve were good but very limited in scope. Garbage could have written basically anything by Curve, but Curve couldn't have produced Stupid Girl or Milk or Queer.

        Eldritch | 7 Nov '11, 09:10 | X
        • I disagree

partly because I love Curve (though also really like garbage) but mostly because I've never bought into the 'Garbage are like Curve' line. They've got completely different song-writing styles. Garbage is more melodies and riffs, whereas Curve is more groove and wall of noise.

Nation of Ulysses -----> The Refused.

          xheathenx @xheathenx | 7 Nov '11, 14:21 | X
      • Do you mean Refused?

And do you mean that Nation of Ulysses are shit?

        If so you are WRONG!

      • Ok, so so far

we've had people in this thread labelling The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and ...And Justice For All as shit, whist labelling Garbage and Coldplay as really great.

You all need to have a long hard look at yourselves.

      • With reference to the OP...

...specifically Dream Theater, Genesis were/are a terrible band who for some reason seem to have inspired a range of acts who, while maybe not attaining the status of great, are at least far superior:
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_(band)#Legacy

        pentargo | 7 Nov '11, 15:28 | X
        • Except that Dream Theatre are shit

and up to 1983 Genesis released some very good and some really great albums.

          Drummerdave @pentargo | 7 Nov '11, 16:00 | X
      • Nirvana -> zillions of good bands.

        Samberic | 7 Nov '11, 15:29 | X
      • so dream theater are the only good example so far then?

        good thread.

        fuck_this_band | 7 Nov '11, 16:04 | X
      • Kiss influenced Melvins

who are a great, great band. I haven't actually heard enough Kiss to judge if they're terrible, but they certainly don't get a lot of critical appreciation.

        ContentToPlayVillain | 7 Nov '11, 16:09 | X
        • Critics are all benders, though.

          • *Crisstics

I don't think that works as a joke at all but i'm sticking with it.

            mug_mug_mug @poptimusgrime | 7 Nov '11, 18:03 | X
        • If you're cool you could pretend your band was influenced by Alice Cooper

and anyway Kiss aren't a shit band. They just have embarrassing songs, can't play very well and at least two of them are the biggests arseholes on the earth. They're not shit. There's a difference.

          mug_mug_mug @sorrow26 | 7 Nov '11, 18:05 | X
        • This is one of the shittest threads ever.

            • They were pub-rock balls, but excited many more creative people.

Possibly same goes for Velvet Underground, although they're not that shit, Sister Ray is awesome.

              Eldooder1no @Eldooder1no | 7 Nov '11, 18:31 | X
