Anyone going tonight?
I am, really excited, not 100% what the hell to expect though.
Martyn supporting so make sure you get there for him.
full review please.
Do they dance or what?
for people who think you can't dance to tracks at around 130 bpm. you definitely can.
Was the best I've ever seen.
Martyn was arsing amazing!
Ain't bad either
Craig Charles was DJing at a bowling alley.
Flying Lotus was good too.
he plays terrible music.
the support were your standard 4/4 house/ techno flavour. groundbreaking 20 years ago. not what you would expect from the worlds most interesting young producer.
and no visuals, just a dark room and backs of laptops to look at. why not let some up coming young vj have a go on all that expensive techno gear. i know the main act likes to save all the effects for themselves...
then 10 minutes of silence with the odd pop and a white flash ( no blue screens) and some stars on the huge screens.
a little techno explanation may have helped here, i am sure the audience would have understood and appreciated the info.
FL starts to play. sound is all over the place. muddy top end, quiet bass then loud bass etc etc.
visual are like the other fella said. a windows screen saver ( huge insult to a vj) they had no relationship to the sound, could have been a dvd playing. the led bars would come on occasionally, as if by random. AntiVJ indeed?
the sound levels out a bit, but never really grabs you, his mad textures and juxtapositions never quite get through.
then at 1050pm FL walks off stage in an attempt to get cheered back on to play one more, which he generously does, and finally turns it up and it all comes together.
then he's off with the parting words "sorry about all this, it wasn't me"
which to me is a massive diss to the antivj crew, i am sure it all worked well in rehearsal. maybe they had had a falling out in the bar before the gig???
so for a sold out gig in an amazing venue it was a bit piss poor. FL didn't shine through the technical problems. maybe a dark room would have been better for him.
I 'll give him another go maybe, but in a smaller venue would be good or conversely in a festival.
Hard to imagine their live show being so poor, their installation/building stuff looks stupidly sick.
for almost £30 including fees, and billed as being a one-off special live performance with very special guests, I was expecting a little bit more than a guy with a laptop playing against some good (but not groundbreaking) visuals.
he apologised a couple of times during the gig. not sure what for. if the show that'd been planned didn't come together for whatever reason, then cancel it, don't just rip people off.
had a decent time, glad I went, but won't be parting with that kind of dollar for flylo again.
what is wrong with this generation of electronic musicians?
it seemed as though he was apologising for the fact that technical problems had led to the visual production not happening as planned....but in any case, as a performance, I expected far more than the dude standing there with his laptop pressing play.
all good for a sweaty 1am set in plastic people, but come on mate, you've just sold out the roundhouse. people expect a lot more and so they bloody well should.
as for martyn...massively disappointing. "live". hmmm
And the second time I've come away disappointed. Not sure if it's him, or just bad luck both times or what (first time was at Bestival.)
Martyn was very good though and I was happy with the visuals.
but we don't know what happened so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for now. At the start he said something about its not working properly, so he was going to 'do the best I can' or something. It seems to me he probably had a totally different show (and a live one at that) planned which for unknown reasons didnt work out, and so he just did the best he could.
