ATP curated by Jeff Mangum rescheduled to March 2012
"We're sorry to announce that due to a set of extremely unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances, this festival event is being postponed - the event will be rescheduled to March 9th-11th 2012 at the same location of Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead, UK."
I guess other people have the email now...does anyone know what happened?

Plans and Apologies
omg
i might be able to go now
Christ
Didn't see that coming
i literally dived for my term dates when i read this
oh look i still can't go
:')
thought this was gonna be trolling.
but hey, it isn't. good news, i can get some cash together and hopefully go!
wowzer
considering how well the Mangum London shows sold, it's hard to belive it was a sales issue... oh well, thank fuck I went for the other one. And yay! Might be able to make this.
Given that Mangum's London shows aren't definitely off sale, it must curely be something to do with Butlins..?
London shows may also be rescheduled
yeah, but it's not definite
which suggests the problem is unlikely to have been Mangum's availability, which is surely the only artist-led problem that would cause this.
I assumed that
but isn't the other weekend still going ahead (or has there been something sent to the ticket holders of that separately?).
Nah
I got the email and I'm only going to the London shows.
I can go now too!!!
Sorry for all the people that this screws, but this suits me to the ground.
Fucking hell
I spent £200 on train tickets for four people and my brother and his girlfriend each spent £100 on flights for this. That's £400 - all non-refundable. This is unacceptable.
That'll teach you
You should just wing these things at the last minute.
In non-facetious terms though, that sucks man.
I can almost definately go to this now...
who wants to share a chalet?
YES hi chris
I'll email you in a bit
bah
check your email, jayne sent round an email to the prima crowd about sorting a chalet
ooo
ah, y'twats, I can't do it then.
Further reschedule to accommodate MY NEEDS please. ME ME ME
Really poor show
given how much many people spend in advance on trains, flights and so forth.
Unless it's a seriously personal issue with Mangum himself (which of course should remain private) I think ATP owe a better explanation than "a set of extremely unfortunate circumstances".
i guess we'll know if it's a mangum issue if the union chapel shows get rescheduled
They weren 't selling well
Either of the festivals
I just hope this means
that Mike Watt & George Hurley will be able to play the re-arranged dates, as thats the main reason I bought tickets in the first place!!
sad on so many levels
And personally fucked off that I've spent money on train tickets that's unrefundable, and their cavalier attitude to this (hope you can get a refund) after only a few weeks ago they were encouraging early purchase of travel tickets.
Sorry - wish I could be more sympathetic - but I was so massively looking forward to this it's untrue.
Yeah
"Everyone buy your train tickets now!....oh, sorry we're postponing it".
This was going to be my first ATP, it's going to have to be really fucking good for me to attend a second
I just really hope this means
that Mike Watt & George Hurley can play the re-arranged dates as thats the main reason i bought tickets in the first place!!
I hope it so much I said it twice
might as well get boredoms to play the other weekend then...
Royally annoyed
ATP surely not to blame though, that would be suicide (and they have been looking ill for a while). Has to be a Butlins thing. ATP could do themselves a big favour by a bit more of an explanation.
However, due to it being questionable whether I can go in March, I will settle for a full refund, and West Country JM and Superchunk shows on the original weekend please.
Also,
I note a Spring date has suddenly been found! (sort of).
CG vs JimmyHuntspill in 5, 4, 3...
might go now
Any union chapel news?
union chapel dates cancelled
and replaced with a show at the o2.
what the
fuck
kidding right?
nope, i have it on pretty good authority
who?
god I hate the O2.
nah, just kidding.
YOU BASTARD
:)
wretched news
working christmas in order to go to this. was a massive christmas present and was heading there with pretty much all my best friends. i love atp, especially the christmas ones and this was my favourite line up in ages. i want a genuine, factual explanation as to why it's not happening. if its poor ticket sales? maybe try not running tons of events all over the place all the time that diminish the appeal of your brand? just a thought. on the bright side - happy days to those of you that can now go in march!
*try not running tons of events all over the place all the time that diminish the appeal of your brand*
what?
?
Makes sense as an argument surely? If there's a limited group of punters who regularly go to your events, there's obviously going to be a breaking point where if you run too many events then your core audience (ie the people who make up the bulk of attendance) is going to be spread too thinly. Whether or not that's the case with ATP is another question.
exactly what i meant
royter, thanks. sorry to joeymahine for not being clearer. i think it's becoming the case, yes.
I honestly don't see what the "brand" has to do with anything
You know why ATP put on loads of gigs? Because they're music promoters.
If I go to see Battles and Nisennenmondai tomorrow, it won't be because it's an ATP show. It'll be because I want to see those bands. If someone else was putting on the same show, I wouldn't be any less likely to buy a ticket. Equally, there are plenty of ATP shows that I'm not interested in seeing.
Yann Tiersen played at the Roundhouse last night, and it was sold out. Did all those people go because it was an ATP show? Nah. I’m sure there were people there who have never even heard of ATP.
And that’s not to say that if people haven’t heard of you as a promoter, you’re doing it wrong. It’s a mark of success, in a way, because the whole idea is that people go to your gigs because they’re good gigs. Not out of a sense of brand loyalty.
also..
that second weekend'll sell out pretty sharpish now wont it?
any reasons being given yet?
mangum getting the jitters?
was great in new york
no jitters there...
wow, if this a Butlins thing it has to put the nail in the coffin of ATP in Minehead
Move it to Butlins in Skegness, or Pontins in Blackpool or Southport!
bognor
statement on the website;
Dear ATP curated by Jeff Mangum ticketholders,
Thank you very much for buying tickets for ATP curated by Jeff Mangum. We're sorry to announce that due to a set of extremely unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances, this festival event is being postponed - the event will be rescheduled to March 9th-11th 2012 at the same location of Butlins Holiday Centre, Minehead, UK.
We understand this will come as a shock and we sincerely apologise that we were not able to inform you before now - please know that we do not take this decision at all lightly. Having to reschedule an event like this is no small decision and we realise that many of you will be extremely disappointed, as are we. We try to put the community of ATP attendees first in every decision we make and hope that you will understand when we say that if the postponement was in any way avoidable, then we would not be rescheduling - disappointing the community that makes our events what they are is something we find very painful.
For now, your tickets will be automatically transferred to the new dates in 2012. We are contacting all of the artists on the line-up and hope that many, if not all of them will be able to perform at the re-arranged weekend - and we will also be adding more artists in the coming months to complete the line-up which we're sure will make for a fantastic event. On November 10th we will confirm all of the artists who will stay from the original line-up and also announce some new additions.
If you won't be able to attend the rescheduled dates, we sincerely apologise and can offer you a refund of your tickets - please contact the ticket agency you used if you would like to do so - see below for a list of those companies and contact info. We hope to see you at another ATP event soon. You will need to apply for your refund before the end of December.
Our heartfelt apologies go out to any of you who had already made travel plans and we hope you'll be able to reschedule or get a refund on any transport bookings without any loss.
The separate London shows for The Magic Band and Superchunk will stay at their original dates - we are waiting to hear back regarding the Jeff Mangum, Panda Bear, Olivia Tremor Control and Thurston Moore London shows which may also be rescheduled - keep an eye on our website for confirmation - we will let you know as soon as we can.
We thank you again for booking, for putting your faith in us and the festival, and we hope to see you in March for a great event.
As there is some more time now before the event, we can re-open the installment ticket scheme so that people who don't have tickets yet can pay a deposit now of £70 (room only) or £80 (self catered) and then pay the rest of their ticket price by the end of February. See this webpage for details.
If you have any questions then you can get in touch with one of us directly via feedback@atpfestival.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we possibly can - you can keep an eye on the news feed at this link for updates on the rescheduled line-up.
Yours faithfully,
Barry Hogan & everyone at ATP Concerts.

Dare I say it
but how about moving it back to Pontins Camber Sands?
naw
move it up towards Yorkshire or the North West, so it actually becomes a bit more accessible to people who aren't from the south of England.
who cares about them
Also
Given that quite a lot of people will not be able to get refunds on flights/trains and so forth already paid for, they could at least have waited a bit before trying to blatantly sell lots more tickets
"As there is some more time now before the event, we can re-open the installment ticket scheme so that people who don't have tickets yet can pay a deposit now of £70 (room only) or £80 (self catered) and then pay the rest of their ticket price by the end of February. See this webpage for details."
Very poor.
Anyone for 90's Xmas party?
http://www.bigweekends.com/the-dates/index.aspx?resort=Minehead&startdate=01/Dec/2011&holidaytype=All%20Weekends
Damage AND 911
Damage and 911 are playing!
Weird. Wonder when that became a done deal. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
Well that pretty much says it all
Ticket sales were very poor. Butlins had a better offer and pushed them out.
A bit sad that ATP can't just be upfront about what happened. Presumably Butlins did them a good deal for the rescheduled weekend?
it's still a bit weird
you're probably right though. I do wish ATP could be a little more transparent, 'unforseen circumstances' is hardly a satisfactory answer no matter how you look at it. Still surprises me that the weekend wasn't selling well given how popular the Mangum London shows were, plus is that 90s weekend really money in the bank at a month and a half notice?
here's a nice video of 911 breakdancing at what I assume is Minehead Butlins:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzAcFa97P-o&feature=related
i like how the combination of awful sound quality and inane screaming makes it look like they're breakdancing to Wolf Eyes
:D
yeah, really shoddy behaviour that
also makes me think its not a mangum issue
Butlins may have pulled it because of sales issues
ATP have show in the past that they don't reschedule because of an event being loss-making
But would Butlins really mind?
I mean, I know it must be annoying for them if bar takings are low, but surely they get a flat fee from ATP?
Apparently Bloc isn't at Minehad next year - being ultra-charitable to ATP, maybe Butlins have just decided they hate them
obviously have no idea how it works
i imagine, like most music venues though, that they make a killing from the bar
you know, you can slate ATP for this all you want, but the last few years have shown they will run an event when it's half full - Fans 2, Matt Groening, Animal Collective - and the idea that they'd reschedule this when it'll likely further diminish the ticketbase through refunds and potentially lose them deposits on bands or whatever is just... silly given past evidence.
wahhhheyyyyyyyyy
To be honest with you I'm inclined to agree with him
NBC has only sold out of 2berth and Mangum has only sold out of 2 and 3 berth.
Oh well
as much as it sounds like a ticket sales issue, i dont understand their logic
cant imagine a whole lot more people will be going in march than december
People going to NBC may be more likely to go to Mangum now
and people have more disposable income in March then December
Pah
"Our heartfelt apologies go out to any of you who had already made travel plans and we hope you'll be able to reschedule or get a refund on any transport bookings without any loss."
Only a month ago ATP were urging us to buy train tickets for this event, which I did. Non-refundable train tickets. Even worse for the people who bought non-refundable flights.
We try to put the community of ATP attendees first
ATP needs to prove this by taking the hit for the fees and extra cost this lays on its 'fantastic community'.
Presumably we won't get back the booking fees for this fuck-up. And then there's the transport we've all booked.
If they really take their community seriously, they need to do us the solid of compensating for it. No fees for gigs via the same agents. Free tickets for shows up to the expense this incurs on people. Some sort of material gesture.
They should be insured, and if they're not that's their tough shit. We should not have to pay for this.
I guessing
When buttons offered them the new date they probably said you can't say it was our fault I was moved..
I don't understand what you have written here.
It hurts my head.
TO A BIGGER HOUSE
unless there has been a legal issue which they have settled with butlins on the basis of non-disclosure
It smells like that to me.
What about In Between Days then?
Or was there not one planned for this December?
that got pulled
months ago.
it got cancelled?
ATP aren't having the best of years, are they?
It was never happening
they should organise a new one
from 12 Dec to 8 March
with Shellac at breakfast every day
:D
I guarantee you they'll have event cancellation insurance.
Unless they're REALLY stupid.
that won't cover people's travel tickets to the event though
which is what people are complaining about...
Feel really sorry for people who have already shelled out for transport etc, hope they can manage to get enough of a refund and are available to still go in March.
Don't be so sure,
It's just about the most expensive insurance going.
Fuck Jeff magnum off
I'll finish that off now....
fuck Jeff off, or move him down the bill and take away his curators rights, then,
get the Stone FUCKING Roses to play. All will be forgiven by everyone, it'll sell out in no time and ATP won't loose any money and be happy so all will be well again.
You can have that advice for free Barry, next time there will be a charge (which you'll easily be able to afford after the Roses don't look back stint in london).
I'm really happy for people who couldn't make it, and now can (including a couple of friends). BUT, talking selfishly, the December dates were perfect (my uni semester ends on the 2nd) and the March dates are nightmarish (dissertation due soon after).
Will probably see what percentage of the bands I wanted to see are still playing in March, and decide then.
i am getting increasingly pissed off that...
...they keep scheduling events when the west somerset railway isnt running on weekdays.
hmm
It seems to me that ATP have over stretched themselves.
If they just stopped all the extra gigs and just did two festivals a year, with DIFFERENT BANDS playing (and not the same ones every year) then people might start going again.
People only have so much money, and ATP have a limited pool of fans. Something had to give.
Then why reschedule and not cancel?
I don't believe they will sell anymore tickets by moving it to March.
I also can't believe that any extra ticket sales from moving it will cover the hassle of all this, the cost of paying off the bands and trying to reschedule them and the damage it does to their credibility.
Is a really strange one.
I think it will attract more people.
The Mangum festival was close to Nightmare Before Christmas and was near the spendathon of the festive period. Bear in mind that until this rescheduling, there was no spring ATP and no Glastonbury, I think it might sell better, if they can get the same bands back.
Bit funny to move it though...
...without checking with the bands first.
I might move Sweden into my lounge*
JMMYHNTSPLL
*subject to checking with Sweden
Do you know how long it would take to send an e-mail and get a response from 30+ bands?
Sometimes you just have to take a punt and hope that others can follow you.
^
could've waited but by that point it would've been two/three weeks closer to the event
Yeah I was being flippant
And you are of course right.
For something this big
I'd expect them to be on the blower to all the bands immediately. Not sending them an email.
it's also the first ATP in years
that doesn't fall in some kind of university exam period
Other than Butlins potentially being more expensive
I couldn't understand why they went for two December dates rather than one in December and one in April/May.
I thought the line-up to this one was refreshing
As outside of Boredoms, it didn't just seem like a standard ATP lineup.
(a) loads of different bands play, this is a tired point that has been debunked as many times as someone has used the word "Shellac" in an ATP thread
(b) the shows are mostly in London, don't always have crossover with the festival (especially now there aren't any), and, you know, live music promoters put on bands. do you think those bands wouldn't play otherwise?
i'm not sure how to eloquently sum up my feelings, so i'm going to make my point in the style of Jerry 'The King' Lawler
on the WWE Smackdown! Just Bring It commentary;
ATP have just...LAID THE SMACKDOWN!...on their audience.
ATP's...reason for postponement is really...bad
OH NO!
The crowd are going wild!
This sucks
Regardless of the fact that i think Mangum is rubbish, this really sucks for people going.
"People only have so much money, and ATP have a limited pool of fans. Something had to give".
Agreed.
From ATP's Facebook page:
To reply to some of the comments regarding the rescheduling of ATP curated by Jeff Mangum:
Unfortunately we're not able to give out more detail on the reasons for the postponement, we wish we could as we know it is very frustrating, but as stated this decision was unavoidable and putting on the event in December would have been impossible - we announced the postponement as soon as we possibly cou...ld - in this case we only knew for sure very recently that the event couldn't happen in December. It was a matter of reschedule, or cancel completely which nobody would have wanted.
Unfortunately as set out in the Terms and Conditions on our website and that we send out to ticketholders, travel expenses and accommodation are not something we can compensate for - and indeed are not covered by our insurance - and you'll find that the same applies across the entire events industry - the funds to compensate everyone for expenses like these are simply not available for large scale events. For those who have already booked trains, we're informed that you should be able to be reschedule or obtain a refund on most ticket bookings for a small fee - please contact the point of purchase for details.
We do sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this situation has caused you.
I like the persons comment that you cant rearrange tickets if its more than 3months
Youd think that theyd check before saying stuff like that. Advance tickets wouldnt be possible even within 3 months but that is the risk you take for the discount, flights well I think going to a festival abroad is pretty risky probably worth getting refundable tickets
So are they contractually not allowed to say why?
is it due to Bultins or an Artist, I can't see this making people too happy.
.
They don't sound particularly happy either
*Unfortunately we're choosing not to give out more detail on the reasons for the postponement because frankly, it's embarassing*
Fixed.
(Also, Colin Stetson sideshow pls).
I wonder if...
...they just forgot to pay for the booking. Or forgot some piece of paperwork. Though you'd think Butlins would be reminding them since it's not really in their interests to lose the event either.
Guys, guys
you just have to TRUST US, yeah?
[I think ATP have bought shares in whichever train franchise is stiffing everyone on their advanced tickets]
Why does everyone think
that ATP would bring this upon themselves? I don't quite get the direct anger at them.
It has to be a Butlins issue, or a band issue, neither of which they want to call out, as that would be a really stupid thing to do.
It's not so much calling them out though is it?
People have paid a lot of money for this and have planned trips/leave/all sorts around it. I think it's reasonable to expect some kind of explanation other than 'we're dead sorry and we hope this is ok.' They don't have to go into too much detail but they could do more.
At the moment they are handling it a bit more like 'sozza, you can't come round my house on saturday, but you can come round next saturday instead' which is a bit off for an event of it's size.
Damned if they do damned if they don't
I think a lot of trust has been lost between ATP and it's customers because they aren't giving so much as a clue on whats going on, naturally if you are at a loss as a result at this you're going to want an explanation as to why this has happened.
Someone made a good point, if this has happened now whats to say it won't happen again in march? This is harder to determine without knowing what the fuck happened.
All true
I just don't think they can turn round and go Butlins fucked us over (as they are holding an ATP there the following week), or Jeff fucked us over (as they want him to play in March), or we screwed up (as that would kill them). I don't think they have much choice really, but I reckon it will come out in the wash.
I'm not saying I am happy about it, I am just saying that it is unlikely to be some clever rip-off scheme designed to screw us all over as I can't really see how this is anything other than damaging for them.
dunno why they couldnt blame butlins if it is butlins fault
Why would they take the reputational hit, how could butlins justify being annoyed if it was their fault, why would butlins care what atp goers think of them there is hardly overlap between them and regular butlins goers and even if there was butlins shelving a festival isnt going to put you off going there if you were likely to there before. If it was a jeff thing why not say personal reasons of the curator or something vague but serious. Not saying the reason is worse than any reason they could give
I wouldn't be surprised
if there is a legal reason for their fudging the explanation.
Summer ATP
I've got a ticket for this, luckily I hadn't booked my travel yet. I have friends who aren't so lucky.
They'd arranged a week around this. Flying to Amsterdam for a few days then a flight to Bristol before a flight back to Glasgow. They've now paid for 2 flights they don't need.
There needs to be some transparency here - they owe the people that are out of pocket.
If it's a Butlins issue they should tell us.
If it's a ticketing issue they should own up and rightly be criticised as money grabbing bastards with no loyalty to the punters.
If it's a Magnum issue they should tell us. No need for specifics but we should be told if it's due to Magnum's unavailability.
Personally, if we need to wait until march, I'd rather take it on the chin and wait an extra few months - have it at the sane time as the summer ATPs. At least then we have the chance of some sunshine. Then they should put their hands in their pockets and book some top level bands.
After all their shows, the film and myriad festivals, they must be turning a very good profit.
If they are contractually obliged by an artist (doubtful) or the venue (more likely) not to disclose more detail, then the the least they can do is say that they can't divulge for legal reasons.
Perhaps the company is having legal/financial difficulties and is bound by law not to say anything?
Financial difficulties seem unlikely due the ongoing bookings etc
After all their shows, the film and myriad festivals, they must be turning a very good profit
lol yeah i no rite
you seem supremely naive of business practices if you think they can publically comment on ANY of those things.
the travel issues do suck, but, you know, that's what those cancellation insurance policies are for. ANY event can be cancelled for any reason at any time.
I don't know much about business law but unless there's some contractual stipulation, why can't they say if there's a problem with the venue provider etc?
the second statement smacks of arrogance a bit
as it transpires tickets for the 90s weekender have been available since friday, its really bad form.
The whole thing
is abysmally badly handled. Unless the Mangum Union Chapel shows get shifted (which may yet happen) then there is no way it can be an issue with him if he's cool to perform in London a few days later. So for now, somehow (for whatever reason) an agreement has been made with Butlins to keep silent.
I've been fed up for a long time with people moaning about ATP and their supposed 'money-grabbing'/'booking the same bands forever'. But as of today I have a serious issue with them. A bit of clarity wouldn't go amiss.
TBH
I lost all faith in ATP when I went to the ATP movie premiere purely to see who the 'secret' Scottish act would be (hoped it would be Boards of Canada - the Warp Recs link was there - but turned out to be Mogwai). Seriously, what is the need for secrecy with fucking Mogwai? Also, we didn't get our free whiskies that the ATP site promised. Cunts.
Also there was the whole debacle with the announcement of the Ten Years of ATP festival shortly after the MBV festival announcement. Me and my buddies had already blown our cash for the MBV fest with a really lacklustre lineup, only for ATP to then announce what was essentially an ATP 'best of' festival. MBV themselves were fucking shit too.
ATP seriously seem to be taking their fanbase for granted lately.
this is one of the reasons I stoppped going, after having gone to
around 12-13 atps.
because mogwai are pretty massive?
agree with the mbv vs 10 years debacle though
That really did disregard people who already had mbv tickets, dunno why they were so defended on here for it
You blew your cash on a festival
with a lineup you didn't much like?
Well if I remember correctly
They announced MBV and the first few acts and people seemed to be happy with it
Then they suddenly announced 10 years, the updates for MBV became sparse with all the focus apparently shifting to 10 years.
I remember the complaints on this very forum, I didn't complain I was at 10 years which was by all accounts of the best festivals I ever went to but I remember lots of people at the time being angry.
Yeah
I mean understandable at being annoyed at them announcing one festival than another, it's just the post suggested they didn't much like the MBV lineup and got tickets anyway
The first few bands announced were a big deal if I remember
so loads of people jumped in without waiting for the rest of the line up, because a) at the time they thought it was the only option
and b) ATP would apparently stop paying any attention to it to focus on their birthday party
does anyone else find it really funny about how the top complaints re: ATP in the last few years have been:
(a) they only book the same bands again and again
(b) they announced a festival only featuring bands that have played past ATPs after a one featuring bands that have most never played ATP and I'd rather go to the other one
Good work, Team Miffle.
Haha
never noticed that!
both miffles are valid so long as a miffler only holds one miffle at a time
Im not that fussed about repeat bands, massively fussed about the 10 year thing (on principle rather than actual line up)
@charliepanayi
what Yesiamaduck said. I suppose the line up wasn't that bad, just not that diverse really. The fact that quite a few of the bands that signed up for MBV ended up playing the Ten Years fest as well was also pretty shitty. MBV were the big selling point for me as I'd missed their gigs earlier in the year and I really wanted to see them. They didn't really live up to my expectations unfortunately.
so it's ATP's fault that MBV didn't live up to your expectations now?
pretty harsh.
You're right.
I can't really blame ATP for MBV's choice of lineup, or for MBV being shit.
However, had both December fests been anounced at the same time, me and my pals would have definitely gone for the Ten Years one. ATP's tactic was to announce the Ten Years fest a week after the initial rush for MBV fest tickets. With each amazing big-name band that was announced for Ten Years, it seemed like another kick in the teeth for us loyal ATP goers that like to get in there early and secure our tickets. Do remember also that this was the first year ATP had announced a second festival for December. It wasn't like there was any hint that we should wait a bit to see what the second festival would be.
by which I mean
a second festival in December, ie two December ATPs.
they said at the time that the weekend for Ten Years was only offered to them
after the MBV one sold like half of its tickets in a week. Unless you're implying that they were lying about that, then they didn't "hold it back".
i got a free whiskie.infact i think i got 2
you must have arrived late
:'(
@mountain_goats Sorry to report that we won't be able to do All Tomorrow's Parties reschedule - the first 1/2 of 2012 is real full for us already. Sorry!
(potentially means no Superchunk either!!!)
The first of many I suspect
That was speedy
And already the decision to take back the last money I ever give to these feckless amateurs is made one band easier.
Fuck, I am angry.
PERSON IS ANGRY ON THE INTERNET
dick
Sebadoh 'unsure' if they can make it
Just said it wasn't Mangum...
http://www.atpfestival.com/newsview/1110191621.php
so we're presuming it's either Butlins being naughty or poor ticket sales?
Yeah but...
As I understand it the Mangum one had sold better than the Nightmare one at this stage, so if it was poor ticket sales one would have thought it would be NBC that got cancelled, no?
im hoping its butlins fault
So they think of moving it. Wonder if its just a blunder on someones part though, dont see how butlins could break a contract
Aye
Imagine the following conversation.
Butlins: "Hi Barry, you know that festival thing you've paid us for? Be a good chap and have it put back to March, eh? Someone wants to put 911 on."
Hogan: "Alright, then!"
Pretty obvious it's Butlins
He's not gonna come out and say it is because it could potentially damage their relationship (bad if small amount of press) and without Butlins, it's Pontins (maybe not a bad idea). Also it's unlikely any of the bands would be cool if he said 'hey so we havn't sold as many tickets as I'd like so is it ok if you and all your crew rearrange for March? Thanks bye.' Also just to note, that 90's fest is in Bognor. The travel money thing is totally awful but I wouldn't delude yourself that a single promoter in the world would reimburse you so yeah...roll with the punches. This whole situation makes them look a bit shit so I doubt they made it happen. They went ahead with the AC one with poor sales right? And that was in Summer.
The 90s weekend is not at Bognor
It is at Minehead.
http://www.bigweekends.com/your-break/81786
It simply states that hotel accommodation is only available at Bognor.
Confirmed by 911 themselves.
https://twitter.com/#!/MrLeeBrennan/status/125957884054994944
Ah yeah
Misread that. There's a bazillion festivals of various revivals. Confusing. Hmmm...I'm surprised anyone would doubt it's Butlins decision seeing that.
if that is the situation I dont think wanting to maintain the butlins relationship is good enough
If butlins messed up how can they expect atp to take the reputational hit for it, if butlins messed up the least they can do is take the blame,. I just dontthink atp would take the blame and I dont think the relationship would be damaged if one party is obviously to blame
Yeah well that's fair enough
But the reality is that Butlins could very easily say, and possibly define contractually, that should they choose to cancel the event, ATP are disallowed to disclose it was their decision. It's the kind of marketing control a company of Butlin's size would wield. Basically, don't make us look bad or you'll never have another event on our premises again.
On the other hand, it occured to me maybe some paperwork wasn't signed off or something and Butlins went ahead and organised another shitty event. In which case everyone is to blame to some extent. But this is unlikely.
The curator makes a list of excuses
Then ATP go through each excuse until they run out of money.
known unknowns etc
people who bought train and plane tickets:
i've not been enough trains to know for sure, but i would have thought you can always ammend a ticket if not get a refund.
however i do travel by plane a lot and i know for a fact that there's no airline that won't reschedule a flight ahead of time. it might cost you a small amount in fees but that's not the end of the world is it?
what if they cant make the rescheduled date?
use them for something else
thats not much of a solution
Even for somebody who had no intention of going
your posts in this thread have been extremely infuriating. It is okay to criticise the things you love.
agreed 100%
pretty sure I'm not being any less rational than those claiming this is because ATP didn't pay Butlins a deposit
Being awfully patronising to everyone though
considering you don't actually know the reasons yet either.
I assumed
he must have been some kind of ATP associate/employee!
Yes, I'm constantly finding reasons
To catch a train to Taunton.
also
mayb atp could put on a makeweight alldayer on in london with some of the cheaper/easier bands to book?
maybe
but that would be wholly inadequate and rubbish wouldnt it?
I think folk are being pretty tough on ATP...
As if they're relishing the fact they have to cancel a whole event and lose a lot of time/money invested, nevermind pissing off a bunch of valuable customers.
I understand where y'all are coming from -- I would be gutted and pissed of as well, especially if I'd already booked travel, etc. -- but some of the comments here are pretty laughable. Talking as if they did it on purpose! Jeez, c'mon.
/O\
This has cost people shitloads of money. Personally, I don't even know if I am going to have a fucking job by the time the rearranged gig comes around, so I would be out of pocket the train fares and my booking fees.
I cannot believe that the reason this has happened is out of their hands. It smacks to me of them pussyfooting around about paying their deposit to Butlins, and then Butlins just saying, sod yer, then, we're going elsewhere.
That's one (conspiracy) theory, sure, but ultimately you don't get this with any other promoter or decent-sized festival organiser. Plus the precedent ATP has for this sort of amateurishness makes it hard to assume they're innocent, and thus must take responsibility for the massive, massive cost this has handed to several hundred people. Seriously, we're talking thousands of quid they've cost people.
So, no, I don't think we're being hard on ATP at all.
angry man is angry
if they'd cancelled it outright, it still would've cost you "shitloads of money", this way you can either cut your losses and bail or still go to a probably-great music festival a few months later, and hoover up the cheap travel tickets as soon as they go onsale.
i can't really be bothered with conspiracy theories (aka 'making stuff up'), not least when they don't make any sense.
as to "the precedent ATP has for this sort of amateurishness", i'm tagging on a [citation needed]
Well, the communication aspect could be a fair complaint
and like I said I totally sympathise about losing travel money, it goes without saying that that's shit. But c'mon, with any and every event and/or promoter there's the risk that it will be cancelled or postponed. Stuff like that happens all the time, and people will always be out of pocket if they've booked to travel.
But have ATP screwed you over in the past? Do they have a reputation for being shonky? I doubt it. Not saying the entire sentiment of this thread is wrong, but the idea that ATP are some kind of con merchants is pretty unfair imo.
dont think people are angry so much about the postponement so much as the way its been communicated
On top of other annoyances in the past
I don't see how they could've communicated it any other way
without massively shitting on a business partner and potentially opening themselves up to legal troubles.
Where the fuck have YOU been?
also, "Due to problems we are not currently allowed to go into"
= "Unfortunately we're not able to give out more detail on the reasons for the postponement"
There you go.
I'm fucking THIRTY, man.
But yeah, I'm well.
(Dunno what to make of the announcement from Butlins. I'm trying to keep an open mind, but, y'know.)
still dont get this business partner stuff
in any business if someone had to let down their customers in such a massive way and it was another companies fault then there is nothing wrong with company a) stating that the reasons were beyond their control and tactfully explaining it was an issue with company b) and how theyve worked together to come up with the best solution possible, and company b) would have no reason to be angry at that if it is truly fault, it would be totally unprofessional of them to not be willing to take the flack and would probably damage their reputation in the events business if they acted that way.
The information ATP put out just is unsatisfactory, and typical of the way they often communicate things that there customers might not be pleased with, a kind of blunt dismissive manor that can really irk people. If they cant say things for legal reasons they could atleast say they cant say thngs for legal reasons, or indicate when an explanation might be forthcoming. As it is they havent offered a satisfactory explanation (or atleast a satisfactory explanation for the lack of satisfactory explanation) for leaving people inconvenienced and out of pocket (not just travel, its a nightmare getting people to pay up for atp tickets at the best of times, there will be loads of chalets now where some people can no longer make it or say they dont want to go whilst others do want to go, its a massive pain worse than any other festival doing it)
You, sir
speak enormous sense.
I'm only going to say this one last time ... unless they have something to hide, or a legal dispute with Butlins, this has been handled badly, insesitively, arrogantly and is doing their future no favours whatsoever.
Putting aside all the bitching and stuff
This is a shame for me as I was hoping to go to this in December, and can't go to the other one (unless I'm going to forego seeing Archers Of Loaf at Cargo, which I'm not). This will be my first year of not going to an ATP festival since I first went in 2004.
I'd be intrigued to find out what the reason is, and really hope it is a good one that is indeed out of the festival's hands like being shafted by Butlins. Scale back and return to Camber Sands in future if this is now possible please!
Sorry by "the other one" I mean NBC the weekend after
I might be able to go to the rescheduled one in March but I have no way of knowing right now and was really looking forward to a pre-Christmas blow out. Ah well, people might be getting some good presents now instead!
SPECULATION
so we've pretty much established that this is butlins being rubbish, right
(either that or ATP just lying to/misleading us, which doesnt seem at all very likely [hur hur awaiting cg response])
in that case (again SPECULATION) surely that's atp being thoroughly dicked over, and i can understand them fulfilling any future events with them just for convenience... but after that, could be the end of atp at butlins/minehead?
good if they reschedule it for elsewhere (somewhere northern please) but pretty terrible if it just means the end of atp festivals
CentreParcs, dude
Fuck sea, I climb trees, muthafucka, to completely misquote Lonely Island.
SPECULATION
While we are speculating (and since the anger has somewhat subsided) ...
Perhaps the vagueness is due to the fact they are engaged in some sort of legal action.
Maybe there's been a fuck up with the booking, ATP have tried to get the issue sorted but can't. They've lost out so are commencing legal action against Butlins and therefore can't say anything.
pigfoot!
<3
To be honest
I saw this coming a mile off.
Anyone keeping check on the chalet availability for these 2 Dec festivals probably would have told you the same. They were gonna lose massively. It stinks what has happened but I don't want ATP to be in financial trouble.
Perhaps
If they hadn't spread themselves so thinly for so long, shit wouldn't be so bad.
They've already done away with the May ATPs. They should find a cheaper venue (back to Camber Sands?) and do two great festivals a year, six months apart to make it easier for hardcore fans to attend both without being hit too hard in the pocket.
It hasn't been cancelled
People seem to keep missing that.
theo?
:D
atp apologists annoy the hell out of me.
i think it's one of the reasons i love CG so much.
out of interest, what exactly do you think theyve done wrong here
nothing whatsoever.
tell us again how late you can stay up, you big toughie
i don't imagine ATP are enjoying doing this at all.
making fun of people who are justifiably annoyed that they're losing a lot of money is very lame. i quite like you in general but the overly-defensive approach you and others take in these threads winds me up a bit. ATP is as subject to criticism as any other festival or organiser.
there are probably some ridiculous comments in the thread about ATP doing this 'on purpose', but intelligent people can make up their own minds about that. it's nowhere near as annoying as shooting down any criticism or questioning of the organisation whatsoever.
I am starting to feel really bad for them
Basically, someone has fucked them over, they are taking legal action, meaning they can't talk about it, and in the meantime they get to watch everyone slag them off. Must be pretty frustrating, to say the least.
whatre they taking legal action over?
Whatever the problem is
Why on earth would they not give a reason, and indeed rule out some other reasons (it isn't Jeff)?
seems more sensible than imagining a fairly large organisation as a kind of
single puppydog-like creature shamed at it's own stupidity-based failure to run things as well as random indie music fans chatting on a messageboard would.
my point non-sarcastically
unresolved legal situation is a much more likely reason for a company to not speak publicly about something than embarrassment/worries about their reputation.
If it was a legal matter
then they would be stupid to give details of the dispute until it had been settled. But they could still say that there was a dispute.
if it was a legal issue for the lack of explanation
they could easily say just that
ATP gets absolutely over the top criticism, though
it's the nature of INTERNET CRITICISM I guess, but people always go far overboard in these threads and tend to blindly ignore the Actual Facts.
like how ATP have run weekends before that have been half full and have clearly lost them money.
like how ATP running shows in London makes absolutely no difference to their weekends and does not 'stretch them thin', because the bands they book would play shows in London around the festival anyway.
like how it would be incredibly bad form for them to start slating their business partners over internal matters when they still have another event to run.
I really have no problem with criticism, but more often than not in these thread's in blind, stupid, angry internet man ranting largely divorced from reality. In the context of this particular situation, and given the Acutal Facts above, I think it's massively unfair to be laying into ATP. I can entirely appreciate how frustrating the situation is, but the situation would've been exactly the same if they had cancelled the weekend outright. This way people at least still get a festival, and given that a ticket costs nearly £200 and I generally tend to run through close to that again on food, drinks, merch and general lolz, an extra £50 in train fare doesn't seem like a massive hardship, and far from the worstest abuse in the history of time.
id agree the idea that ticket sales is a factor is really unlikely
the london shows, also not really an issue, but the spread to thin in general is probably a fair criticism of them in recent years. But I dont think it would be bad form to, obviously not slate butlins, but atleast give an explanation or say due to legal reasons they cant say anything (dont think theyd be doing it in march if there were any legal going on). Its more than £50 its all the hassle of rearranging travel, leave, trying to get everyone in the chalet to recommit to going etc it is a big deal and all they gave was a vague announcement followed by another one which had quote a bad tone to it about not being responsible for travel etc (which obviously they arent but still seemed abit misguided) plus inaccurate advice about being able to rebook. I think if people got tickets and are angry about it then they are entitled to feel that way, if other people are ok with it that is cool for them but that cant expect their opinion to apply to others
Yeah, but you are charging round this thread brusma-ing everyone
I wonder...
If Butlins got pissed off because they used a picture of Camber for their Facebook profile picture?
http://www.facebook.com/AllTomorrowsPeople?sk=wall
Or maybe it's a hint of things to come.
my word
pablo honey > pinkerton > loveless > kid a >>>>>>>> KOL
but really, i love atp and stuff but i wanna know what the deal is! i really hope some explanation comes out sometime as i think it would definitely save them from wild speculation which is damaging them. they are definitely running out of ideas and are relying on older influential bands (inevitable due to the curator thing) but i do hark back to the days where the early atp's where it was all current bands typically at their peak who were peers of the young-ish curators. i mean, i do love all that stuff in our band could be your life, but the festivals are definitely less exciting without being primarily comprised of fresh new blood, or at least relevant bands.
which leads me back to the original point, if they don't sort out the PR on this i fear it could result in a backlash... i would hate atp to continue the slight decline of recent (ticket sales, whatever etc...)
so... i wasn't planning to go to this but maybe i will try if the new line-up is good. but i would like to know what the problem is, unless someone has cancer or something which i guess would be fairly personal.

jeff, buddy, i'd love to be able to budge on this but there's more money in the nostalgia dollar. now maybe if you'd oil up your chest and crank oh comely up to 220bmp, i might be able to swing you an afternoon slot
Oh man.
Just realised that means Group Inerane in Bristol will be cancelled.
I have tickets for the other one but I'm gutted for people who have lost money on booking fees and trains. I'm sure they had their reasons but I can't help thinking this is the beginning of the end for ATP.
Their brand has just become too 'messy'. I can't imagine any other company coming up with something as convoluted as the ticket options for the recent US fest or that gold membership nonsense (whatever happened to that, or did I dream it?). Maybe they just need to stick to promoting London gigs. They could change their name to Foundation or something.
if this means Group Inerane in Newcastle is cancelled I will
not be very happy.
^this apart from the 'beginning of the end' bit
I can't imagine any other company coming up with something as convoluted as the ticket options for the recent US fest
[something about the Primavera portal]
All The Day After Tomorrow's Parties
They're faces must be red, realising this, like, a month and a half before the festival.
I just wanted to go to hang out with some friends I haven't seen in a long time, anyway.
I guess this makes me the indie version of people who go to Glastonbury et al just to get rat arsed. dgaf.
I mean, I might still go, if they're able to go too...
(hi Nestor)
hi!
pretty sure all the good people are still gonna be there.
YAS
Just noticed
the ATP film is on Channel 4 late on Friday night.
when is somebody going to knock jamie summers down a peg or two?
that's the real question
No one can afford pegs now
after all the money lost in booking fees and transport costs, and it's hardly as if ATP are in the position to supply them ;)
I do hope this is a piss take. Because otherwise, It's pathetic.
I realise ATP may be having a few problems of late (I imagine a lot of promoters are). These may or may not be due the economic downturn, Minehead taking the piss or some other factors. Who the fuck knows? I imagine there's lawyers making a fair amount and cash arguing the toss somewhere though.
It seems to me like it's open season for some people to have a pop at any questionable decision ATP make at the moment. I do feel ATP have made some decisions that haven't felt good to me, (moving away from Camber and Kutsher's. etc). And I have left a few events out on that basis. (I'm not claiming to have attended every ATP, but I've been to a few). I do know that as someone that remembers a time when a festival like ATP didn't exist, and what it how it has benefited my life. I do know I'd miss it if it weren't around.
I have some friends who are well pissed off about the cancellation. I'm trying to convince them to come to the other weekend.
It's tough if you may possibly lose some cash on your planned weekend, but some of the bitterness and anger is questionable in my opinion.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/3204518
Sorry it's late and I'm tired.
I can't be arsed to read that thread, and I don't do the social threads on here. But I take it it's some in joke I missed. Sorry and that.
The bit after my bold type (not getting the joke) rant, I stand by though. Sorry Crispin.
it's fine don't worry
Bold type? On here?
It's even more interesting when you're a mod and you can see who that really is.
I was initially was responding to Crispin's statement. for clarity's sake.
Today would be a good day to
explain the 70's weekender booked for the same date in March.
Indeed

FFS ATP, WTF
they should haave it at a haven campsite
the one in mablethorpe is top dollar. and they should have the wrestling show on. and book haven.
Imagine if there was some kind of ATP + WWE event.
Let's make this happen, Jordan.
We can sort it
go to the wwe event in Butlins and bring a guitar and some static!
*Shellac
Just lost it reading through those artist tags at the top. :'D
I hadn't sorted a ticket out yet for this ATP
as I was still unsure of which atp weekend to go to. I am still going to give ATP the benefit of the doubt, as I have had such great times at their gigs and festivals and also the fact it mightn't be their fault. If it is, then they deserve the stick they'll get.
It might be a case over the last couple of year they've attempted to expand but either due to the recession or perhaps there isn't that many people with good taste in music it hasn't worked out, hence the half empty weekends.
If I spent money on transport etc I'd probably be very angry and be much less accommodating.
Anyone know how trustworthy this site is?
http://www.neonfiller.com/wordpress/?p=4158
Butlins Denies It Was Behind ATP Jeff Mangum Postponement
someone knocked this dramaz up a notch
BAM!
so it's nothing to do with Jeff Mangum,
nothing to do with butlins,
who can possibly be to blame here?????
DINGUS KHAN that's who. ATP heard they were coming but thought it'd get all a bit rock n roll so bottled it.
Good call on Chuck Prophet in their top 10 guitarists.
Dude!
i don't trust that one bit
you couldn't even be bothered to come up with a real name! Jae? seriously you can't just change one letter in your name and expect to get away with it!
IRON HELPS US PLAY.
its
a tough one.
If i spent hundreds on accomadation, i'd be pissed.
As an outsider, i'd need to know why this happended before risking going to another one. As a business, there is a level of trust between ATP and the Customers. If they cancel for vague reasons, then people may think the worse and not trust to go to the Butlins based events again.
hmmmm
"Butlins have let us know they have yet to update their site to take off the 70s event currently listed on there on 9th-11th March - it should come down very soon. It should also be noted the event they are now running in December has been put together by them in the last week and has nothing to do with our rescheduling Jeff's weekend."
so it looks like it was down to ATP. which is mega shit on their behalf, basically.
Did ATP announce that after that other site said it weren't Butlins?
wuh oh, DRAMA
looks like, that went up on their facebook page after the other thing came out
PETUBED MAN ON INTERNET IS PERTUBED
I'm quite happy to admit that I'm wrong when there are Actual Facts on the table
and I still stand by the fact that people go completely over the top in ATP threads
you are the absolute worst for going over the top in these threads though
as long as you can see that.
hardly
I just try and wait for the facts to be clear before making a hysterical judgement
i think you can separate this from the usual trolling though
and i think people have every right to be annoyed and express it, whether on here or elsewhere. a good friend of mine was coming over from canada for this. she can postpone her flights and make the new date, but she'd have to drastically cut her time over here as the new date is leading up to year end, so her holiday plans are moreorless fucked. i'm sure there are other people on here who have had similar issues.
."the usual trolling" - Idiot Tory aside, it isn't usually trolling though
it's just people being hysterical Internet People. it's like the way nothing is ever mediocre anymore. new albums are either great or absolute shit. surely you've noticed that? people go way way way over the top on here. it's the nature of the beast.
i can appreciate this was frustrating for a lot of people (although, you know, #middleclassproblems, particularly with people flying from half the planet away to go to a music festival - little perspective MAYBE?) but, and as I have said a million times in this thread, ATP have never cancelled or moved a festival before because of low ticket sales, even when it's clear to absolutely everyone going that the festival will lose them money. They've never chucked anyone off a bill to save cash, either. Given their past form in this, I still think the level of vitriol directed towards them in this thread pre-today was totally unreasonable.
they canceld the first post bowlie atp that was supposed to be in september 99
There were a few comments in this thread suggesting theyd shelved it because of poor sales but I think the main criticisms were around the shoddy way theyve communicated the rescheduling
They canelled the Throbbing Gristle weekend because of poor sales
Running multiple events at a loss?
Now there's a strategy for business success...
I love the spelling in this post
SOOOO Butlins are the good guys :O
I feel sorry for the people that have booked planes and trains to this 70s event, bloody ATP, no regard for anyone! (tongue in cheek)
When ATP let us know that they couldn’t do the early December break
basically, Jamie Summers has been invited to a wedding in December he can't get out of hasn't he?
Fear
...might have to overcome my fear of tents and defect to End Of The Road next year. Could always posh up and hire a teepee.
atp taken the fuckin pisses
why might this affect the Thurston Moore show at Union Chapel !?
Because he was probably in the UK for the festival
and may not want to do 2 trips to the UK so he may postpone the events
because touring abroad is mega expensive and you want to do as much of it in a single trip as possible
especially if you're only playing small venues like the Chapel
:(
On the other hand, maybe he's not bothered about being at home right now :-/
ATP looking like a shower of cunts at this point
not helping themselves to any sympathy either. Worst PR move possible is to fail to adequately communicate, and they are failing here.
Kind of...
I think there's plenty of defending and excusing on here - and the Facebook comments come across as the best PR orchestration ever. You can literally *feel* the love.
You cannot literally feel love.
Not sure what you refer to by defending and excusing, but I'm talking about an official explanation.
Make the most of it.
How about those stuck with non-refundable tickets sorting out a weekender festival in Taunton that weekend? A few moderatly decent bands, fill up the local B&Bs. Could be a chuckle.
Screw Minehead
Get Mangum, Superchunk et al on at the Brudenell. Fuck the south.
Pigfoot!
so with all that has happened
the only possible reasons i could see are ticket sales or personal reasons, but for the latter i'm sure they could at least give a brief detail of whats happened. or it could be tha' bloody 'elf n safety innit
Explain
Why you would do this, if it was to do with ticket sales. Thanks.
cash flow, both of atp and its customers
That would make sense if it was cancelled
Which it hasn't been. Where does this assumption come from that if they shift it to March they will make more money? I just don't get it. By moving it to March they piss everyone off, damage their reputation, fuck off a load of bands, and have to pay out a load of refunds.
Not a brilliant way to sell more tickets.
I continue to not believe this is some nefarious act designed to screw us over.
I dont think moving to march will sell many more tickets
But it could solve a short term cash flow problem, by march they could have more money from other events or loans that businesses often need to take out, maybe 2 large underselling festivals within a week just isnt financially viable but march gives them some breathing space
By paying out a load of refunds
to punters and bands?
well yeah if it is a short term cashflow problem, a company would rather take a hit by postponing something
Rather than runout of cash and go bankrupt, now theyve got 4 months to secure finance which if wasnt in place could send a company under
the lack of explanation is worrying
Because if it is a cashflow issue and they are in trouble I wouldnt want to get a ticket because if they go bankrupt thats it no refund
additionally if it's a circumstance
as suggested by ThingsThatFly above then cancellation would see them obligated to refund all the tickets sold, which would be potentially be more damaging. Postponing will presumably only see a (smaller) percentage of the tickets refunded.
if its' short term cash-flow problems it makes sense
anyone up for some wild speculation on what went wrong
1) cash flow problem, buying themselves time, but then why the jeff one
2) key personel unable to make it
There pretty much the only things I can think of
They've said it wasn't to do with Mangum
and nobody else on the bill is big enough to warrant rescheduling the whole thing around them.
The whole thing's just a bit weird, and the fact they haven't commented on it makes it even shittier and more frustrating for people who've lost out.
Whether or not
this is ATP's fault, it's going to give a lot of people the perception that it's dying on its arse. Slow ticket sales, no more May festivals, now this - does anyone seriously doubt that the moment has passed?
I'm not going to slate the ATP guys, we don't know what's happened and it may well be not their fault - but they're a company that's built around being down-to-earth and having a good relationship with their fans, and this is really damaging. Pissing off their customer base at this stage is about the worst thing that could possibly happen, they need to tell everyone what's up.
Personally I was probably not going when it was scheduled for December and now I'm much more likely to, but I feel for those that have been messed around. It's amazing how quickly ATP has gone from something that looked like an established, solid series of festivals to just seeming like a bit of a shambles.
im probably in the minority
but I dont think they have a particularly good relationship with fans, an unproblematic one maybe (they put on a festival people turn up everyones happy) but theres been a few things that have bugged me about wthe way they do things and this communication style seems typically evasive, no doubt theyll wheel out the we arent sponsered comment at somepoint
i prefer
shellac to in rainbows. in other news i love atp and they've made me very upset. i'm not going to break up with them but i'm definitely not getting them much for christmas.
Let's be honest
We're all loving this controversy?
I'm not
It could seriously damage the long term prospects of the best festival of the last ten years. It's all a bit sad.
Which is precisely why
they should be handling this better and, unless there are serious reasons, a bit of transparency wouldn't go amiss (even if it's just to say "for legal reasons we can't fully explain right now".)
I've had largely amazing times at 14 ATPs. They've put on a shed load of incredible gigs over the years. I'm excited about Gang Gang Dance next month. I don't want to see them collapse or go into administration but equally I don't want to think that they have a cavalier attitude to the hundreds of people who've been let down and financially screwed by this decision.
It is very hard to recover from bad PR.
Yep, I meant from both sides
Hmm.
I've always felt that ATP are quite an arrogant organisation, and this certainly isn't helping. I mean when there's a positive thread about an ATP or a gig, you always get that Summers fella filling his boots with it all; but when there's a few questions to be answered outside of Butlins related fuck ups he doesn't seem to chip in. And surprise surprise he's not about here today either is he?! I mean he's probably a nice chap and all that, but he doesn't half adequately represent the latent smugness of ATP when he's on here... (if you ask me anyway. Which no-one did.)
Anyway - I love the festivals but don't like the organisation. It'd be a shame if this is the beginning of the end for 'em...
When is someone going to take him down a peg?
Just have mate, just have.
The internet is hereby changed FOREVER.
It took 311 replies but we finally got there
I've Ctrl+F'd "peg" every hour for the past two days, srsly.
Think your computer's broken pal
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4307157#r6350647
Yeah, he's a total fucking prick
I hate him so much
:D
it's basically our fault
for taking him to his first ATP
There are plenty of people here willing to die for the ATP cause.
No need for any ATP staff to bother getting involved.
Heh. And vice versa too but Summers is more than happy to join in the party with the good stuff...
ATP is the Apple of the festival world isn't it? Weird how some people give so much of a shit...
To be fair I've always got the impression that it's part of Jamie's job to do lightweight positive PR
for the organisation. I don't think it's his remit to fight fires and he'd probably get in to trouble if he was to comment about any of this.
Jamie is one of the nicest blokes in the entire world
No need to get personal
Yeah fair enough...
Although it was more a response to the banter upthread about how ATP's fan communications aren't the best. I kind of agree and was thinking that the main ambassador of the organisation that I see talking about it represents some of the concerns...
But, yeah, I'm sure he is a lovely fella and I don't want to be slagging off someone I've never met so fair enough. It's the organisation I'm more critical of...
He's the main ambassador on here because he was already a regular on the boards.
It doesn't mean he owes us a personal appearance. I think he's probably got quite a lot to deal with right now.
And clearly ATP can't tell us why it was moved or they would have.
Why anyone would think Jamie wouldn't be bound by the same constraints I'm not really sure. It makes me fear for his inbox right now... :-/
Absolutely outstanding artist tags on this thread.
Jamie Says | Nothing
:D
probably my best work :D
Tags just getting better by the day
Take a sad song and make it better.
probably the least funny example of it that i've seen.
i can't believe there ever was a band called "Uh Oh! Explosion"
9th-11th is a joke in yo town
Yawn.
This entire thread is beyond stupid. I bet all of you complainers will go back to ATP. Also you have no idea how a festival like this is run. Fact.
I don't think people are so much complaining about what happened
more to how they've handled it, as in not giving an explanation and only apparently saying it wasn't Butlins fault after Butlins outright denied being involved in the postponement. So people clearly enjoy the product and most of them (including myself) will probably use again, in the mean time I think people deserve an explanation and shouldn't be left out in the cold just because they'll come back or they don't understand the business, especially those that have been left out of pocket.
i;m
err, what. first time that has happened to me
...i'm also really curious and nosey is what i meant to say
fact.
it's good that you're here to put us all straight.
so you are saying you wouldnt complain about something until it got to the point you would boycott it entirely
A load of people have lost a lot of money.
Fact.
That should have said
A load of people have lost a lot of money.
A fair amount of people have lost the chance to see one of their favourite artists.
No one has been given an explanation.
Fact,
FACT
SIMPLES
I know it's a topic that has been done to death but
watching the ATP film last night I have to conclude (reluctantly as I reside in the West Country) that ATP lost a large chunk of its soul when it left Camber.
I only went to one camber ATP
the atmosphere was a lot better, the facilities were shocking (remember ordering a vodka slush puppy but the slush puppy had melted in the machine, they said it was too warm to make them (in the venue) which I found amusing... it was bloody hot mind, no air con from what I remember... I almost died during Les Savy Fav
the heat during Pitchfork was unbelievable
i basically stayed out of the smaller room because i couldn't cope with it
Must have been a particularly hot weekend.
It wasn't always that bad. Camber wasn't particularly nice but then I doubt many people on here would go to Butlins outside of ATP weekends either. There was just something about it. Recent events like the Animal Collective one would have gone down a treat there. If they can't sell out weekends with bigger names like the Mangum and Groening weekends any more then they need a plan B. One Christmas event plus the Alexandra palace thing. If people think an event is going to sell out it often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Yeah it was incredibly hot that weekend
I think it was one of the warmest weekends in May for a long time! I think it hit the mid twenties! I missed Hot Chip because of the heat :(
oh yeah, it was specific to that weekend
the other Camber one I went to (United Sounds II) was fine, but then it rained a lot of the time and was kinda miserable...
id agree with that
been to 4 camber and 4 minehead and the minehead ones just dont compare for atmosphere (though to be fair 3 out of 4 minehead ones ive been to have been winter ones which could play a part). All the stages at minehead are especially horrible (except for when the used that horse one), and it just seems somehow less lively, also as bad as the accomadation was at camber i've had worse at butlins (never make the mistake of booking room only even if you have no intention of cooking) minehead is a nicer town than camber sands though
i actually think that the main stage at Camber was way worse than anything at Minehead
always found it had zero atmosphere if you weren't at or near the front, but obvs for anything as warm as that Pitchfork weekend being at the front = torrents of sweat and ming.
I didnt think upstairs camber was great but ok, more of a traditional venue shape, always found it easy to get near the front if I wanted to, could sit at the back for bands I wasnt that fussed about, kind of social area to the right for chatting. In minehead the very biggest bands at night (say pavement) there is enough of a crowd into it for a good atmosphere but the rest on that stage just falls flat, the other big stage upstairs is the worst weird shape sticky floors, strange seating and darkness
The main stage at Camber was excellent.
It's no different to the upstairs at Minehead except you can actually get everyone into it if needs be.
was that ever a problem
I cant remember ever not getting in for anything at camber, except the for carnation but that was downstairs
oh wait guess you could have been talking about minehead
I've only been to a couple of Minehead ones
But far preferred Camber. It was just more personal and forced you to bump into more folks. And the nature of the festival requiring you to book chalets still meant it never went all Glasto and sell out in 4 minutes.
I reckon that's why I enjoyed the Ally Pally event so much, it had a similar feel.
Camber Camber Camber
OI OI OI
repeat to fade.
As I see it
based on the limited information I (and most other people have) - when you buy a ticket to event like ATP, you're taking a (small) risk. It's almost surprising (and, I suppose, to the credit of ATP) that something like this hasn't already happened. Part of the whole independent/'alternative' music thing is uncertainty/disorganisation/blah blah blah. It survives because people tend to be more understanding about these things. I mean, plenty of people moan about Upset the Rhythm's stage times, Olde English Spelling Bee not paying their bands, etc. And the same group of people dislike 'corporate' music events, big labels, iTunes, whatever.
There's a trade-off there, so it surprises me that people are getting so uppity about this.
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
it's not whats happened blah blah blah blah but rather the explanation blah blah blah or lack thereof blah blah blah blah blah blah they knew for at least 7 days before blah blah blah they made it official blah blah blah blah because butlins put together a replacement event, which they begun selling 7 days before this announcement
See, uppity
Uppity is the wrong word, fucktard
Aggressive would be more appropriate, and I would be happy to demonstrate this by coming round there and shoving the word uppity up(pity) your arse. Sideways.
I reckon its looking like the union chapel ones arent going ahead
thurston and panda bear reconfirmed fairly quickly but no word yet about jeff, guess it makes sense from a promoting march point of view if he doesnt have shows here first, i'll add that to my list of miffles
or maybe im talking rubbish and gigs in december would be massively good publicity for festival in march
to be honest I hope they are cancelled
'Cos I actually don't want to go any more. All reports of the shows are that the crowd just bawls along with him like some kind of indie karaoke. Would be great to see him make those songs alive but not sure it will be anything other than Anne Frank inflected Oasis.
im hoping the church venue will help foster a sense of revere and the crowd will keep quiet
We could all make a pact
To shush everyone around us. I'm up for that.
I've seen videos where he encourages singing,
shushing won't stop that.
Sounds a bit like a Dashboard Confessional gig
and that's not good.
Actually I maintain they do:
two silent-crowd gigs, and one mega-singalong.
Lighten up, you miserable indie bellends.
Looking after the ATP community - latest update
So as I bought my tickets less than a week before they announced it would be cancelled, I emailed ATP to find out when they knew the weekend wouldn't go ahead, notifying them that I was getting advice on trades description grounds.
All I got was: "I'm afraid we're not at liberty to discuss any further details about this. Thanks again for your email."
Not. Fucking. Good enough.
Truly
not fucking good enough.
Answers will never be forthcoming at this rate.
ARGH
FUCK.
cant believe it has been postponed!
i keep feeling this too, haha.
as much as it sucks to see yet another thread groaning under the weight of anti-ATP vibes, i can't help but echo the sentiment that they've brought it on themselves with the way this has been communicated (or not communicated, more to the point).
that said ATP is easily (like, far and away) the best festival in the UK and I'd sooner see the this one postponed til March than watch them go bust... a bit more respect would be nice is all.
for me end of the road overtook atp in the uk festival stakes
Me too
Albeit, part of the appeal of going to both ATP and EotR is that they are at polar opposites in terms of experience. One of each in a year is pretty perfect.
ThingsThatFly
why do you still go to ATP?you've done nothing but bitch about it for years.it's getting very tedious.
because I like watching bands I like
and will go to events where lots of them are playing, Ive loved it in the past and on the whole I think its a good festival but there are a few aspects of it which I think could be improved. I probably do come across as really negative on here but thats because it seems like on here atp are unquestionably above criticism and I think there should be some balance espcially in situations like this
Just realised that Group Inerane are doing a European tour.
= no Bristol cancellation (hopefully) = tickets just bought.
I'm starting to wonder...
...if this is going to be a completely new line up now.
It won't look much like the original I'm guessing.
It's sad to see that incredible lineup reduced to just 1 act on their website. I doubt that Group Inerane will be there since they're not the sort of band that can just pop over for a gig.
Still no news
on the Mangum Union Chapel shows? Or did I miss something?
Is there a cut off date for a refund?
Want to see what happens with the line up.
Think it says
Line up Nov 10th, refunds by Dec 31st. Is def in there somewhere.
The answer is get a refund
and come and join us at the other weekend. You know it makes sense.
Mike Watt & George Hurley
cancelled before it was even postponed. This could mean that they'll come back though?
Boredoms
are the main act I want to stay. I'd like Joanna Newsom and Colin Stetson to still be playing but I wouldn't be THAT bothered.
It was ath the same time Panda Bear and JSBX were announced
How does that suggest artists were removed from the bill? The lineup wasn't complete, they were still going to add more stuff to it before the rescheduling.
I think there were about 30 bands
When there's usually about 40?
was the line up finished when it was cancelled?
there may have been room for new additions without cancellations, guess we'll soon see
They are :)
Fleet Foxes for sure
Seeing as they are playing London the weekend before.
^this
and Leeds, Blackpool, Glasgow and Birmingham.
I wish they'd hurry up
and just announce it already.
Exciting isn't it?
Is it going to be the same, completely different, just the bands i lked off the first one plus some others, or just the ones I don't like?
Could do with being Slayer, Mogwai and GBV really.
As long as Boredoms are still there
It'll be fine. If it was an almost entirely new lineup it'd be really exciting and there's bound to be some good stuff.
Yeah
I'm kinda gutted that they've announced I'll be Your Mirror with a whole heap of bands that I want to see. Would have loved GBV at the Jeff Magnum weekend.
It's up! Magnetic Fields!
Oh hell yes the Magnetic Fields.
From the original lineup
They say: Sadly Panda Bear, Tinariwen, Superchunk, Group Inerane, The Mountain Goats & Colin Stetson will not be able to make the new dates.
We are speaking to Fleet Foxes, Sun Ra Arkestra and Micachu And The Shapes and hope to confirm them soon.
Mike Watt and George Hurley are back!
and The Music Tapes as well!
that is so much better than I expected
mike watt was awful at supersonic
stetson and superchunk are big losses imo too.
Minutemen are back on the bill!
This, in my mind, completely justifies the postponement.
gud
pun
Lineup is currently...
Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) / The Magnetic Fields / Joanna Newsom / Boredoms / Sebadoh / Low / Versus / Scratch Acid / Yann Tiersen / The Fall / Thurston Moore / Mike Watt & George Hurley perform the songs of the Minutemen / Young Marble Giants / Robyn Hitchcock performing I Often Dream Of Trains / The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion / The Magic Band / The Raincoats performing The Raincoats / The Olivia Tremor Control / The Apples In Stereo / Half Japanese / Tall Firs / The Music Tapes / Group Doueh / A Hawk And A Hacksaw / Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise / Lost In The Trees
Rather oddly
I was not remotely interested in this ATP beforehand, but having seen this list you've just posted it actually looks pretty damn sweet...
some good additions
Mike Watt & George Hurley are back!!!!!
Shame about Colin Stetson and Superchunk though.
Superchunk aside, i am struggling to see the differences
(which is good).
Magnetic Fields is new, right? Happy wth that.
Gone:
Panda Bear
Mountain Goats
Superchunk
Tinariwen
Group Inerane
Colin Stetson
TBC:
Micachu & the Shapes
Sun Ra Arkestra
Fleet Foxes
New:
Magnetic Fields
Versus
Music Tapes
Group Doueh
Look forward to Magnetic Fields' other dates
Not seen them since 2008.
I would say I'm gutted that there's no Colin Stetson or Mountain Goats...
...but I wasn't going to the one in December, anyway, so there's nothing lost. But mainly SCRATCH ACID ARE STILL THERE
Heh
Spelled Joanna Newsom's name wrong in the email.
all told, I think they've done pretty well to retain the bulk of key acts here
^this
might actually go now (was already signed up for the other december ATP)
fleet foxes and the magnetic fields
combining forces to be the single most dull way to spend a couple of thousand quid. oh well, i'll go anyway just for the novelty of it being in march.
Don't know if there is much point in adding to the speculation
But seeing that ATP haven't shed much light on it I'll post this from an AV Club interview with David Yow - http://www.avclub.com/toronto/articles/david-yow,64626/
AVC: You’ve got so many other irons in the fire, with your photo work and acting—and rumour is you’re quite a good cook as well—that it must be nice to plan one of these tours whenever you want, and know that there’s an audience for it.
DY: I was right with you until you said, “and know that there’s an audience for it.” Because I don’t really know that. For instance, the show in Atlanta was supposed to be at one particular venue, and the advanced ticket sales were so low that they moved it to a much smaller place. And the fact that the All Tomorrow’s Parties thing has been, not canceled, but sort of postponed is interesting. I certainly don’t blame Scratch Acid for that. But we were part of that bill. Do you know about that, ATP being pushed back until March?
AVC: Yes, but not really the exact details as to why.
DY: Well, I don’t really know exact details either. But apparently Barry [Hogan], one of the guys who runs ATP, as far as I understand, lost a whole bunch of money in the New Jersey ATP. And I guess someone, like his accountant, told him that if they did one in December they’d lose even more money. So I guess they decided to reschedule it.
hmm, very interesting
:S
hmm if thats true im not sure what I think
on the one hand it is completely understandable to want to keep that kind of thing underwraps but realisticly that could never last, and their alluding to (if not actually saying)legal reasons for silence seems a bit unwise, so many bands and people in the know the truth was bound to come out eventually, so yeah rubbish situation but honesty is the best policy
Unbelievable.
"Please note that the refund deadline included in our original announcement of the rescheduling of ATP Curated by Jeff Mangum was incorrectly stated as being the end of December - it should have been the 2nd December - before the original dates of the festival. This is now the deadline, so if you cannot make the new dates please contact your ticket agency before then."
They've also announced that they wont be confirming any new acts until January after the cut off for refunds. On top of that Fleet Foxes and Micachu and the Shapes have pulled out.
Going to get a refund I think. Partly because quite a few of the bands I really wanted to see are now not playing but also because ATP have behaved, and are continuing to behave, like twats.
I dont think there is anything wrong with announcing more bands in january
The nuber of bands is more or less equivelend to the pre reschedule, people have to commit at some point, 2 months before the festival people asking for refunds would mean theyd have trouble selling those chalets
but yeah the way theyve handled the whole thing has been terrible
incredible
there are some things where if you get the date wrong, you really are gonna have to just stick to it you'd think!!
Absolutely this
Especially with 3 days notice of a change of 28 days, that they only noticed more than a month after the original announcement.
AND that they haven't emailed ticketholders yet.
Really, really unimpressed. Close to cancelling my tickets on principle.
According to Jamie on FB
Email going out today from ticket agencies, apparently.
Wow
These people have no idea how to treat their customers.
yeah i never even had anything against them but really this is absurd
Looks like an accountant or a bank manager is calling the shots now
That must be fun.
:')
