Which artists should release a best of compilation?
Gorillaz have announce they're going to release a decade spanning singles collection:
http://gorillaz.com/weare10/
R.E.M. are splitting up and finally releasing a best of compilation covers all of their active years (1982-2011).
Who else would you like to see release a best of who haven't done so already?
Some artists I think should:
AIR
Belle and Sebastian
Goldfrapp
PJ Harvey
LCD Soundsystem
The Streets
The Strokes
TV on the Radio
The White Stripes
Others which might not work:
Boards of Canada
Mogwai
Sigur Ros
Stars of the Lid
- Relevant artist taggings:
- Kunt and the Gang »[x]

And include Ocean Breaths Salty
Iron Maiden haven't released one for a few months, another one must be due soon
Not to mention New Order
Faith No More deserve one.
FNM has one:

AC/DC
I'm disregarding the Iron Man soundtrack compilation thing
If they did...
...it would potentially be the greatest rock album of all time.
Ween
It would be amazing.
The KLF
Metallica
Queens of the Stone Age
Muse
NIN
The Definitive NIN torrent which was slipped out by 'someone' is pretty great
Three themed discs of stuff with artwork - The Singles, Deep Cuts & Quiet Tracks
Goes up to The Slip I think?
Good tip, will investigate
Of course (bar the KLF) I only listed bands whose complete works I have already, mind.
Apparently there's also a 4th called Heavy Tracks
Yeah meant to put QOTSA on my list.
Would be good with a bonus DVD/CD of their headlining set from Glastonbury this year, which included their 10 most popular tracks as voted for by the fans.
I would only buy a 'Best of' if the band had split up already...
I know what you're saying, but sometimes you just know when an artists best years are behind them.
As I'm a stickler for listening to all albums (even compilations) all the way through, I'd much rather have 5 years worth of quality on a compilation than one with 20yrs woth of padded out dross.
Probably not quite as useful in these internet days
but always found Best Ofs an invaluable gateway to new (old) bands, especially those with huge, daunting back catalogues
And as has been discussed in another thread, some best of's arguably eclipse the albums
- when you take them as a single body of work of brilliant tunes.
Cf, for me, Supergrass and SFA
Flaming Lips
Sonic Youth
Interpol
Sonic Youth have 2
Maybe they should have 3?
now that WOULD be avant garde
not as avant garde as a kasabian best of
I was gonna say that Screaming Fields only covers their pre-Geffen stuff
and that their only career wide one was Hits Are For Squares, which despite all the $ELLOUT accusations it landed the band is apparently the rarest Sonic Youth CD.
but their website tells me Hits got a proper rerelease back in August. so, uh, yeah. tracklisting is pretty good, though.
None should really
Apart from specific artists or genres that released a lot of singles or EPs. Early Beatles, Reggae, New Order spring to mind.
Why?
Do tell, please.
I just find listening to artists' studio albums is better
Tis all. But if they released a load of stuff on single or on obscure EPs, fine to group them all together on a comp.
Many like best-ofs as a good starting point for a band, but the album considered their "best" I find does the job very well indeed.
Fair point, but there are some artists who've got great best ofs that are much better than any of their studio albums, e.g. Madonna, Madness, Abba.
...
probably because they couldn't write a good album track
which kind of goes against the idea in your other post that nobody should release a best of and we should just listen to all of their albums instead.
A Weezer singles collection would be pretty ace
Undone
Buddy Holly
Say It Ain't So
El Scorcho
The Good Life
Pink Triangle
Hash Pipe
Island In The Sun
Photograph
Dope Nose
Keep Fishing
Beverlyhillsandweareallondrugs...la la la la la...
Perfect Situation
Pork & Beans
Troublemaker
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived
If You're Wondering If I Want You To
Memories
Burndt Jamb would have to be on there
Bloc Party
Just get Silent Alarm
and weekend in the city, lyrically their best album by far
But not all of Silent Alarm is great.
And I only like about half of AWITC, and they've done some great B-Sides. They need a compilation.
I order the foie gras
and I eat it with complete disdain
Steve Earle
I know he had a couple from his earlier years but some of his later records especially could do with some cherry picking
I always think it seems like a bit of a death knell when a band releases one while still together.
Almost like admitting defeat. "Hey guys, this is probably gonna be the best stuff we ever do, you probably shouldn't bother with anything we make in future." If it's strictly a singles collection it's not so bad, particularly if there are enough non-album singles to justify its existence (obviously if it's entirely non-album singles then it is immune to this rule) but usually it seems a bit like a band semi-giving up (unless it's just contractual obligation). Just do a live album instead - it's almost the same thing but with enough of its own purpose to not look like you've given up.
Yep, it can definitely be a death knell for artists on the wane.
On the other hand, it can also be a complete cash-in on an artists who've finally made it big after years in the wilderness.
Or it can be a useful starting point for newcomers to bands with moderate to large discographies.
It can indeed
and I'm not the kind of dull person who just hates best ofs in principle. I just think when a band releases a best of and then a new album a year later - no one is going to listen to the new album.
It's usually a record company requirement though, isn't it?
They sign up to a deal of making five albums and a best of. The band don't generally have control over it in a lot of cases, hence rival best ofs you get when bands change labels etc.
For PJ Harvey and Mogwai
Have a listen to their Peel Sessions albums. Both work really well as a career summary up to the point they were released.
Great idea thanks,
*searches Peel Sessions in Spotify*
They've got the PJ Harvey one on there, nice.
And ones for ....Pulp, The Fall, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Mercury Rev, Magazine, Killing Joke, to name just a few!
I know what I'll be listening to over the next few days.
The Mogwai one's on there too
http://open.spotify.com/album/42YHIL8OuNkND1WfgFy8l4
The Mogwai one is on there too, I think.
It's called Government Commissions. Plus they released a new live album, Special Moves, last year.
Government Commissions
Is all of their Peel Sessions is it not? The version of Paths To Helicon (1 or 2 I forget which, the one with the beautiful bassline then POW it explodes before the end) is great on that.
Yeah.
The Delgados Peel Sessions is brilliant too
the Delgados' 'Complete Peel Sessions'...
...isn't complete.
"Tempered; not tamed" is not on there but it is on the 1st issue of the peel sessions (The Single CD issue!)
I only mention this because its my favourite track and a striking omission!
Kanye West
it would have to be a 2xCD
and even then it would still have to omit some killer tracks
No one should
Just listen to all their albums, preferably buy them as well!
the Gorillaz greatest hits tracklisting sux
they just organised the songs by album and stuck them in chronological order.
It's called Gorrilaz - The Singles Collection 2001-2011
and has got all of their singles in chronological order from what I can tell with a couple of remixes tagged on the end.
It's pretty much what you'd expect from the title.
Gorillaz*
sux
