say it was rubbish, but on first listen yesterday I loved it. 8/10 for me. His DJ sets are a lot of fun, a lot harder than anything on the album. But I kind of like that he has two totally different styles.
saying that 'his melancholic, yearning phrasing occasionally pushes things closer to Coldplay than to James Blake.' I'll listen to it later, I hope it's good, cause I really liked Ash/Black Veil and Black Water.
it's a big shift in gear and overall a pretty gentle wash over you album, with only 2 instrumentals and nothing that really kicks up the bpm, it could easily loose old fans for that but gain many new ones. i would say ash/black veil, dead water and candil de la calle stand a little stronger than the rest, but the rest is solid, escape and goodbye are both tidy little gentle echoing ballads and in the case of escape far closer to james blake, than coldplay, mind you i've barely listened to anything post parachutes. A bang in the void is a really nice little xylophone instrumental remaniscent of mice parade or the dylan group and i would say ash/black is like the best radiohead track (not made by radiohead) and i'd say there is even a bit of bon iver in there in places and thats not to say that it doesn't remain apparat, it's just an apparat pretty far removed from the harder beats of yore.
But after a whole 1 listen, I preferred the Moderat collaboration.
