ALRIGHT BIG MAN ETC.
Man who signed Oasis 'is a cunt' shocker.
but you're still right. His version of Rag Doll is gworgeous.
LETS USE IT
^ A real McGee quote
and primal scream.it wasn't all bad.
I don't really think you can give him credit for them.
remember the adam and joe ep when they went to a Hurricane #1 gig
ignoring the fact that cashflow and other issues make it not quite so simple as 'indie labels cash in on sob story while waiting for a fat insurance check for their previously unsalable dead stock" but...
it wasn't THAAAAAT much less simple.
Alan McGee was at a music conference?!?!?! Why? Was everyone in the 'Music Business' busy?
World keeps turning.
Everett True to te thread pls!
I don't need more proof that he's a cunt.
I would seriously despise the man. As it stands, I just find him... odd.
I kind of agree that bringing Oasis to us almost undid that good work but the fact (that I find hard to remember these days) is that they were actually good when he signed them.
and that they weren't the worst band that he signed
Momus and the King of Luxembourg as well as the obvious stuff mentioned and Teenage Fanclub.
I get the impression reading between the lines that they struggled for years desperate for a hit to keep the label going and once a band capable of producing hits came along he really (and understandably) leapt on them but maybe got so focussed on getting hits that he lost some of the interesting aspects of the label as a result. It's a shame really 'cos if he'd carried on balancing out the Oasis side and the Momus side a bit more it would have been an incredible label.
Today he responded to the inevitable criticism his comment provoked: “I do not retract any part of the statement… there is no retraction. There is no apology. And if people don’t like it, they can go fuck themselves.”
but he'll still never be Malcolm McLaren
"please can we not talk about the thing that Alan McGee has just said please" but there wasn't a thread about it so I stupidly, naively assumed that we'd all risen above it. Sigh.
was like 'UNMADE BED LOL! MODURN ART IS RUBBISH A CHILDE OF 3 COULD DO IT!" over the Saatchi fire.
it'll be like, satire or something
so his quote "got rid of all the shit music" is highly contradictory.
than anything Alan McGee has ever said/done.
was in Adorable, who of course were on Creation, & he said that the label changed completely after McGee signed Oasis, as if suddenly all the other acts on the label ceased to exist. He said he didn't mind back in 1994 because like everyone else he was blown away by their live shows & the brilliance of Definitely Maybe, but in hindsight (this conversation took place in 1998) he was a bit pissed off not just for himself but for some of the other acts, notably the Boo Radleys, whose wonderful Kingsize album had virtually zero promotion budget.
Just asking, as I genuinely don't know.
If not - then I have to agree with McGee - there is a cheerful irony in a warehouse full of crap product getting torched by kids.
If someone was hurt, then I retract this statement.
As the 'net says:
Sony DADC is a leading disc and digital solution provider for the entertainment, education and information industries, offering world-class optical media replication services, digital and physical supply chain solutions and software services. The company’s network consists of service offices, optical media production, distribution and digital facilities in 19 countries worldwide.
Sony Music Entertainment is a global recorded music company with a roster that includes a broad array of both local artists and international superstars. The company boasts a vast catalog that comprises some of the most important recordings in history. It is home to premier record labels representing music from every genre. Sony Music Entertainment is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America.
They're sort of possibly related in that somewhere there's a spreadsheet with turnover collated from both 'companies'.... I think (I may be wrong) that McGee thinks the Sony Music Entertainment warehouse burned down - not the Sony DADC warehouse. Labels/bands who fall under the Sony Music Entertainment umbrella on labels like Columbia use a distributor called Arvato - these bands/artists include folks like Britney Spears, Foo Fighters, Vaccines etc. The Sony DADC warehouse is independent of Sony Music and does distribution for among others Domino, 4AD, Chemikal Underground etc etc. The PIAS company look after their sales / marketing etc.
I'm not excusing Mcgee's comments - they're pretty dumb and offensive - and he should check his facts - but it seems to me in his bubble he's got a little mixed up.. and made himself look silly.
