I like it.
A lot of emotion in it. I really like it.
Not really sure what he's doing with his voice at times. It sounds over-produced/polished as well. But new Tom Waits!!!!!!
but there's no escaping the fact that it's the same schtick he's been doing for over a decade now. For an artist frequently lauded as being innovative & challenging, Tom is getting somewhat predictable in his old age.
But still can't wait for the album!
but let's face it, after about 40 years and the albums he's done, he's probably entitled to sit on his laurels
but he seems to have reached the same critical status as Dylan where he gets rave reviews across the board regardless of the quality of his work. Which is fair enough when it's Alice or Mule Variations, but not when it's a dud like the Glitter & Doom live album. That gets a Metacritic score of 79 but I'm convinced few of the reviewers actually bothered to listen to it.
There wasn't a great deal of variety in the songs chosen (he performed some early stuff on the tour such as Invitation to the Blues & Tom Traubert but none of it made the final cut), the audio quality is poor, and he just seems to bellow every word - no subtlety to his vocal performances on this one. Having been at Hammersmith in 2004 I know what an awesome live performer he is, but G&D just doesn't capture that.
was a little disappointed with that live record. felt it didn't quite represent the tour - or at least the two blinding shows I saw in Dublin at the Rat Cellar. new track is typical Tom, which is a good thing.
