The common DiS band
I think, like some thought in the other thread, that most people on here of a certain age would have liked, and probably loved, Muse uding the Origin phase.
Are there others? I think something like Bloc Party or something similar in the noughties, and maybe Blur or Pulp in the 1990s.
What's the true common, everyone's listened to them fairly regularly at somepoint, band of DiS?

White Boys For Gay Jesus
Nirvana seem an obvious one to list too...
... I could just be showing my age though. Almost certainly am in fact.
or The Pixies
can't imagine many music fans have never listened to either of them at any point. The Pixies especially seem to branch out to fans of other genres. Last time they toured pretty much all my favourite dubstep/bass music producers were getting excited to see them on twitter...
Also mentioning the pixies gives me chance to link this brilliant Chris Morris parody of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQqzF7NdoXI
I think your "of a certain age" comment is the important point.
My school year = too young for everyone to have had a Blur/Pulp phase, and too old to have listened to Bloc Party. Most people probably listened to Muse though, yeah.
Everyone who's ever been a teenager probably had a RATM phase.
No one has ever had
a RATM phase
it's never just a phase
Radiohead
nah
yeah
the criteria? that everyone's listened to them fairly regularly at somepoint.
You know how you NEVER get 'Where to start with Radiohead' threads, but you get them for all these other bands? And that every thread on them gets 700+ fucking boring replies?
Also, despite King of Limbs being fairly average, it's easily been the most covered record on the board this year. I really can't imagine an Idlewild reunion album competing for thread space.
I've never listened to them fairly regularly at some point.
Therefore, nah.
well obviously there isn't going to be one band that absolutely everyone has listened to
your suggestion was RATM, so you can fuck right off brah.
Dude, your bad taste is not my problem
my bad taste in who i have observed to be the biggest catch all-DiSer band?
a truly crushing insult.
^^ -dan- gets owned...
... and yeah, Radiohead would be the obvious choice - whether you were into Pablo Honey, or The Bends, or OK Computer, or Kid A, or In Rainbows, Radiohead have been a consistently relevant force. They've been balancing being both a recognised heavyweight contender as well as a 'gateway' band for alternative music since the early 1990s. Therefore forget my first answer, as we clearly have a winner.
...Except I was actually referring to his dismissal of Rage...
Rage are alright
I just thought they were one of the more baffling suggestions. I guess there was decent DiS buzz for the Finsbury Park gig, but any Radiohead tour causes 426 fanboys to collectively shit their pants. "I HOPE THEY PLAY POLYTHENE (PARTS 1 & 2)!!!11!!1!."
Ah, fair play then...
... I too had a Rage phase, but I think they were very much of their time (first album was enough for me, and to be fair only the first half of that was dead good. & Know Your Enemy of course).
Super Furry Animals
Flaming Lips?
Terry Shitlegs and the Muscular Dystrophy Disco All-Stars
^
But only teir earlier stuff. Too mainstream now.
Howling Willie Cunt
the archetypal DiS band is surely idlewild?
Yeah, if you're 30 maybe
and therein lies the problem
im 25
i don't think you understand what archetypal means
I don't think that's what this thread is about
Or, going by the OP, it's not what this thread is about. Going by the fact that it's descended into the tri-monthly name-a-band-that-everyone-must-love thread, maybe it is...
the OP clearly states that he means bands DiS members have in common
that are quintessentially DiS bands. in other words - not just popular bands all over, but bands that will have more fans here than on any other forum. most people have just been naming big bands, which isn't the point because everyone loves radiohead.
i said idlewild because a) the average age of people on this forum leans in that direction and b) early idlewild is exactly the kind of thing DiS loves
i didn't say everybody on here loved idlewild, but they seem representative for a majority.
I'm over 30 and I've never knowingly heard an Idlewild song
the dreary name and the fact that one of them is called Roddy Woomble puts me off
Fuck off
um...ok?
every time i open this thread i get more and more irritated by this
mainly because of the 3 this's you got, what's the deal? do you just not like me or did you find something wrong with what i said that i can't for the life of me figure out
or do you just not like idlewild? if that's the case, then you've misunderstood the point of the thread.
Idlewild: not in my name.
Apart from the E.
Idlwild: not in your name.
Where should I start with...
...The Fall/Sonic Youth seem to pop up quite regularly.
Also, over the past year there seems to have been quite a camp for 'Funeral is the best album of the noughties/Arcade Fire suck now that they've gone all serious'.
Arcade Fire: Not in my name.
rcd Fir: Not in your name.
Eels
The National
I thought the DiS community hated The National??
Or is that the Guardian commenters?
I think it's just people with ears
So its
DiS then.
A load of Dissers very vocally hate on the National
it makes you sound ever so suave and indie if you dismiss them completely, try it out.
In fact it's such a pity they keep turning out such exceptionally good records as it makes it all the harder to hate them and therfore claim one's indie points.
Ew
Fuckshovel
pixies/sonic youth/pavement
bands from a magical heyday just before the collective memory of most of the DiS community but with a long enough back catalogue to have endured their splits and with moderately successful comebacks
out of those..
i would say pavement is the most agreed apon
I hate Sonic Youth
I think a lot of people do, they're just not very vocal about it.
B*Witched.
R.E.M.

If DiS was just Sean
*Paramore
National/Neutral Milk Hotel/Weezer/Radiohead/Scott Walker/Tom Waits/DJ Shadow/GSYBE!/Joy Division....
seem to be quite widely agreed on from what I can tell.
If such a thing exists,
it's probably Joy Division, yeah. I've seen dissent for every other band here but them. Short-lived, absurdly influential, all serious and portentous, old enough to be considered classic, recent enough to see direct influence on current acts.
Sweet Jane Andrews Lane Theatre Saturday October 17th @ 10.30pm
viva brother
Neutral Milk Hotel is probably the only common artist I can think of
Bloc Party are weird one to suggest, what with them being utter shit.
There's no way Neutral Milk Hotel are a common artist
they're pretty much the basis of all 2000s US indie
which everyone on here seems to bum
Haha, good one
Those 'where to start with albums by' threads
that pop up monthly are always either about Sonic Youth or The Cure.
I have noticed a lot of universal love for Interpol & The National on here too. And, as liked by a few above, Radiohead.
I really don't ever remember seeing one for The Cure
Are you sure you're not thinking of Tom Waits?
There was a Cure one a couple of weeks ago
Weezer - Blue Album
or My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
surely!
Backstreet Boys
At-The-Drive-In
Or Ash
AT THE DRIVE-IN!
Surely??
Guided by Voices
...
it's so weird but some people on here don't like gbv
Hiya
...
hi
nirvana radiohead the pixies the beatles the strokes
^are the correct answers.
Joy Division
Radiohead
and Arcade Fire
why are people saying nirvana
none of you people like nirvana.
I nominate pixies
nirvana are all right
?
NIrvana was actually
the correct answer. Sorry
I'm saying Nirvana because when I was 11 and Teen Spirit came out...
... all previous love of hair metal was banished and a new, far cooler me was born. By the time I was 13 I was buying Sonic Youth albums from the Warp records store in town, as well ordering Black Flag (which took like two months to import from the US back in the day). All because of Nirvana.
The PTA
DiS bands
limp bizkit
Portishead?
Do they count?
Pointless thread degenerates
into naming every well known band of the last 20 years shocker.
Sweet Gor....
Mclusky?
Pretty sure everyone here likes Mclusky.
I can't imagine a thread like this happening for any other band:
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4275403
One of my favorite threads <3
Erm
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4283534
Oh yeah!
Not quite as long or as fun though. I suppose you could do a good Pixies version. Still though, I CAN'T IMAGINE A THREAD LIKE THAT FOR MOST OF THE BANDS MENTIONED HERE.
if it were 25 years ago then I think that echo and the bunnymen
would tick most disers boxes
The Fall?
Pavement?
I've never heard a bad word said about The Wrens.
Not sure of their overall popularity, but that album seems to be reverenced above all else around here.
Sunn O)))
Everyone bums them but really they're just the indie types token metal band.
early weezer
obviously not everyone likes them but they seem to have a broad appeal, people who remember them first time round, people who discovered them in their wilderness post pinkerton years, people who are of the green album era, even once people have moved on to more credible realms of music there is a soft spot for early weezer, beyond dis too on a pub juke box or a house party buddy holly coming on will get an almost unanimous positive reaction from people into all sorts, obviously there are some people who don't like early weezer and these people should be ostracised
Ostracise me good and proper.
Didn't really dig Weezer when they came out. I only started listening to 'em from Make Believe, through MsWza. Quite liked it. Red was so-so. But I've really taken to Raditude and Hurley. Going back and listening the earlier stuff, Blue's ok I guess, but I still don't really get the mythologising of their early stuff.
joy division no
massively overrated band with awful politics too.
...
yeah can't believe ian curtis was a tory omg what
nah, just kind of daft politics
and he wasn't a tory, he was an incredibly nasty cunt
so yeah, fuck you ;)
Muse are awful.
Wu Tang Clan
Backstreet Boys circa 1997
Bumsnogger
This thread is well snobby like
archetypal DiS thread
;D
Surly everyone here like Burial?
If you don't, get out.
*leaves thread*
Everyone on DiS loves Is This It?
Therefore, The Strokes are automatically the quintessential DiS band.
you all fucking ruined it.
idiots.
what the fuck has this got to do with anything
Nope.
Not to my taste, soz
:'''D
Oh
Apparently that means I don't like music. Any of it. What a stupid thing to say.
This may controversial and just my musical synapses
But does anyone really LOVE pavement on here? They are amazing,, but i find them hard to really love- it's all so cool. Ala The Strokes and so much music of the past ten years. This isn't a criticism, just an observation. I'd say the one band most people on here would be Radiohead. I used to think The National and i still kinda do but it became cool to hate them. Perfect example of DiS eating itself.
As you've probably worked out by now
the answer is that there isn't one.
Maybe White Boys For Gay Jesus, at a stretch. But otherwise no.
At first glance
I thought this said Swervedriver. Was trying to work out how they could be perceived as racist. Doh.
urgh i have always hated muse
and never been into bloc party.
i agree with Anschul up there^ with pixies / sonic youth / pavement.
