Muse - Origin Of Symmetry
is album of the day on BBC 6 Music; just heard Hyper Music.
I have to say, this is a fantastic album. I'm surprised at how quickly I fell out of love with Muse though. I never listen to them these days, and have found them to be overblown to the point of unlistenable.
But the bass riffs on this album! Could be one of the best bass-driven albums there is?
Also, got great memories of bouncing along to their set in the pissing rain (wearing some stupid plastic sheet that Orange were handing out) at my first ever festival (Reading 2002) - still in my top 5 gigs. Apparently they're playing it in full @ Reading this weekend.

that Reading set was amazing
I was soaked to the skin but stuck it through and yeah one of the best shows ever (certainly at the time, and in my memories of it).
Watching all the steam coming off the moshpit :D :D :D
it was an unbelievable experience
the heavens just opened for the bounciest gig ever and everybody was just greasing past each other at full speed! then The Strokes came on and it was Julian's birthday and he was on crutches. ahh memories
nope it was the Foo Fighters wasn't it? It was Pulp after Muse
well it was nearly ten years ago...
nope, foo fighters
Pulp and The Strokes both played Friday night* at reading, saturday night went Ash -> Muse -> Foo Fighters, Sunday was the Prodigy (and G'n'R if you were at Leeds)

(*this is funny because they're co-headlining again this year)
christ. my 16 year old self was pretty hammered for the duration, no wonder i can't remember
this was my first festival as well (remarkable seeing as I was 23 at the time)
I remember Muse coming on the stage during the thunderstorm (perfect timing).
i snuck in with an old wrist band that year
it was pretty great
It's still a brilliant album
They're still brilliant, stupid, overblown fun live.
Fuck all of you.
As far as I'm aware most people are like me
can't stand their new records but still consider them one of the best live bands around
ah man, that Reading set
between Ash and Foo Fighters, right? i remember two things:
a) it was proper sunny for and up to Ash, so all I was wearing was a t-shirt, no long sleeves
b) i ate some dodgy chips just before Ash, and they were kicking in all through their sit
combination of stomach ick and ensuing downpour meant i spent Muse and Foo Fighters hiding in my tent feeling horrible. pretty sure i fell asleep at one point as well :'(
I like almost everything they did up until the last album which was horrible
they are still great live too
micro cuts is aweful
ffs!!
WRONG - micro cuts sums up everything that was great about Muse!
No.
Microcuts is brilliant. As is darkshines.
wait wait WAIT
Resistance in third??? It was utter gash. Origin of Symmetry would be even better if it had Dark Star and In Your World on it - Dark Star is one of the best songs that Muse ever wrote!
*Dead Star
Love that single, I remember hunting it down like a dog before I had the internet at home.
I'm with you on Absolution and BH&R
but The Resistance was as dull as dishwater.
What I'm really surprised about, though, is that no one as yet has ripped into you for rating BH&R. I thought all the Muse fans hated that album.
Black Holes And Revelations is sick
It's a very (well, for them) restrained album with a really diverse sonic pallete. In comparison to their other albums, it's not got a load of guitar heroics and wankery on it (Invincible aside) and introduces a lot of new sounds into their repertoire. Radio friendly it may be, but that shouldn't stop your enjoyment of it.
Listen to fucking Assassin. Go on. Do it.
I completely agree
I reckon Starlight->Supermassive Black Hole->Map of the Problematique is an incredible run of songs.
And while Soldier's Poem is my least favourite track from the album (I initially hated it), it didn't take long for me to decide that it works very well in the context of the album as a whole.
Soldiers Poem and Invincible is a great combo on that album
Minimalism next to a really well thought out piece that crescendos into complete wankery.
they can be pretty boneheaded, but at least they're clever boneheads.
Invincible is fucking horrible
The point at which I realised I wasn't really a fan any more. Fuckawful
I can't stand invincible
The solo is almost good enough to make me not skip it, but not quite.
tremendous album, a real masterclass in mainstream rock
almost all of us have seen tastes evolve in the decade since its release, or whenever we had a 'Muse phase' (cos let's face it, the majority of people on DiS probably did at one point or another), and most would say that they no longer really listen to Muse. I know I don't on a regular basis at all.
But they serve as a great stepping stone/launch pad to other music, and for that I'll always look upon them kindly and forgive their bloat and excess. Plus, you can't deny some of the stonking tunes they put out, even now the likes of New Born, Plug In Baby etc kick fucking ass.
I once again must request
an Un^This button on here.
It was pretty great back in the day, dunno if i could listen to it again though
Anyway I listened to a couple of their b-sides the other day. Pretty sure Forced In is the best song they've ever made.
Wish they'd done more stuff like that.
Just listened to forced in again
it's so good. Like Kid A era radiohead mixed a bit with TOTBL interpol style drumming but made before either of them came out.

I dunno maybe this is just nostalgia though and it's shit.
That Reading set is one of my favourite musical experiences ever.
Love this album - hate everything they did after this, apart from Stockholm Syndrome.
Still the best thing live though, seeing them on sunday. Fuck you all.
Still a pretty great album
like a lot of people I don't really seem to play them much at the moment, think there was a bit of overkill on the back of Absolution & Black Holes (both in the media and on my part, I probably overplayed them and saw them a few too many times in a short period) and had lost a bit of interest by the time Resistance came out.
Have had quite a long break from them now, hopefully will be quite enthusiastic by the time a new record rolls around.
I've not listened to it in years
and I didn't like the last 2 Muse albums but it's one of the first albums I really loved. I had the tab book and would spend most of my time learning how to play the album on guitar.
If I was to give the noughties a defining guitar hero it would Matt Bellamy no question. He's Jonny Greenwood meets Tom Morello plus a load of cheesy rock posing! He's fucking awesome to watch and to be honest even though I'm in a band that sounds nothing like Muse I have a lot of effects pedals he has and perhaps if I wasn't into them I wouldn't own a digitech whammy or a line 6 delay (he's probably upgraded now but at the time of OoS he was using these!)
And yeah I agree with Scrotum's comments above, they're a great gateway band and I think if I had got into bands like Linkin Park or the Foo Fighters around the same time then perhaps my music tastes (or at least the path I took discovering music) would be drastically different.
It's always baffled me how much bigger this band got with every album
I'd actually stopped liking them by this point. I quite liked Showbiz, but was beginning to grow tired of the overtheatrics on Plug in Baby, and then when I heard New Born, that was my "I'm ooot" moment.
That said, I listened to this slice of nonsense for the first time the other day. 'Yes Please': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT6BvEvhgsw
Y'know, I've never really liked Muse.
Plug In Baby is obviously pretty huge though. Quite like Time Is Running Out (is that what it's called?).
My mum loves them though, taken her to see them about four times. Pretty fun to watch live.
Greatest live band of our generation.
I used to really love Muse. Started to go off them after Absolution and havent activly listened to them in years, but like virtually everyone that goes to festivals, it's kind of hard to miss them live and every single time they have blown me away. I was in no way interested in them at Glasto last year but got dragged along by some mates and once again BLOWN AWAY.
Say what you like about Muse, they still kick arse live.
I'm so glad i snagged some cheap Reading tickets so i can see this on Sunday
i loved them upto and kind of including absolution, and they were such a great live band back then, so i assume they'll be OSSSUMSZ again.
Hullabaloo
is a great live album. I'd probably choose to listen to that rather than this album.
And it ends with Agitated.
I once woke someone up with the intro to Ashamed
OoS is the reason I own a guitar.
especially hyper music and bliss
fucking.
my mate made a fan site
i was his official tab writer. that's probably the most productive thing i've ever done for the internets
I always liked Showbiz better.
I don't really like either very much anymore.
Although Origin Of Symmetry was the one that got me into them.
