August highlights - LP of the month, playlists, etc
Seeing as it's horrid outside and there's a bank holiday ahead which probably means no-one will be around to do the usual last Sunday of the month bantering about the month just past, I thought perhaps we should get in a bit earlier.
My LP of the month was probably the ZOMBY album - really surprised by it, and been fitting in nicely with my obsessive listening to the SBTRKT and Metronomy records (they really are the sound of summer) and is a nice escape to the future from listening to St Vincent (pretty much the album of the year, isn't out 'til next month but you're in for a treat - got great interview answers from her too!) and Antlers album (Burst Apart sounded incredible at Summer Sundae!), which have been in my ears about 3 times a day, every day, for much of August.
Here's this month as a playlist http://open.spotify.com/user/seaninsound/playlist/0dNPkKJBjdHxF8nlccPwc6

What were your favourite records, songs, gigs of August?
most of next week's releases
are already streaming/leaked, so i sorta presume some of you are already living in the third week of October anyways :)
fuck all decent has come out in ages
Zomby was great though
I haven't been blown away by anything this month
but I really like the SBTRKT album and the new Beirut. Mark Kozelek was the best gig I went to and Mount Kimbie were really good at Field Day.
oh yeah and I love the Satin Panthers EP by Hudson Mohawke
oh also
the Widowspeak album is very good
did many of you check out the Moonface album
be curious what you make of it.
yeah
I liked it, sort of underwater OMD. But my vote is War on Drugs, cant stop playing that album
haha!!
Can't wait to see their careers take off
now that you've stopped harming them by mentioning them
I Break Horses
gave that a spin this morning after hearing a track and really liking it. Bella Union coming up trumps once again!
The new Stephen Malkmus is rather good.
August Gig Highlights:
Heads / Big Naturals
Mark Kozelek
How to Dress Well
and Big Joan at Dean Lane skate park.
we have a Malkmus interview coming up on DiS in the next day or so.
hmmmm:
Songs (some of these weren't released this month but are what i've been rinsing through August):
Sbtrkt- Wildfire (Objekt remix)
Objekt- Objekt #2
Hackman- Close
Balam Acab- Welcome
St. Vincent- Surgeon
Breton- The Commission
Outfit- Two Islands
CANT- Believe/Answer
Magic Touch- I can Feel the Heat
Maria Minerva- ruff trade
Youth Lagoon- Cannons
Shlohmo- Just Us
Drake- Headlines
The Weeknd- Lonely Star
Machinedrum- Lay Me Down

Clams Casino- Motivation/All I Need
Girls- Vomit
Jay-Z & Kanye- No church in the wild
Wugazi- Sleep rules everything around me
Lamissy- Pacheko
Dominic Eulberg- Der Tanz der Gluhwurmchen
Not really any albums that have majorly done it for me this month, maybe Shlohmo, Clams Casino Instrumentals, The Weeknd, Cant...
The War on Drugs album is great
Saw Blonde Redhead on Friday
Would say it was in my top 3 gigs of all time. 4th time seeing them, and lightyears ahead of any other time. Performance was spot on, everything sounded great. The five track run of Not Getting There-Spring By Summer Fall-Spain-I Still Get Rocks Off-Falling Man is as good as any i've seen live.
I like the Tiger and Woods album
Forget the name. Can't tell you anything about it, came across a mix of there's by accident. Not even sure what genre of music it is (I'm sure a more dance proficient person could tell you) but I really love it. Perfect timing, especially as it's getting so hot during the day here it's a real chore walking anywhere. This makes it happen!
it's fun-tastic!
released last month; genre: nu-disco/house.
Hasn't been a vintage month
The Beirut album deserves a mention, as does Slave Ambient by The War on Drugs. And Active Child of course, but every post I write on here seems to mention this.
i find it difficult to remember what came out this year
never mind trying to work out what came out this month. I think that's the sort of thing only journos with a stack of press releases have any idea about
and for that reason, ahm oot
These prob came out this month or last or soon...
Zomby - Dedication [4AD]
DJ Diamond - Flight Muzik [Planet Mu]
Trouble Books & Mark McGuire - s/t [Bark & Hiss]
Main Attrakionz - MondreHott [Green Ova]
Main Attrakionz - 808s & Dark Grapes II [Mishka NYC]
Sully - Carrier [Keysound]
Ekoplekz - Intrusive Incidentalz Vol.1 [Punch Drunk]
Samiyam – Sam Backer’s Album [Brainfeeder]
Jhene Aiko – Sailing Souls [http://jheneaiko.com/]
Maybe some more, I can't think...
12"s: Damu, Vibezin, Teeth, Erra, Swing Ting, NKC, Jam City, Trim, Kevin McPhee, Champion, Anthoiny 'Shake' Shakir, Jason Fine, Nochexxx, Presk, DJ Blend Detroit, West Norwood Cassette Libary, Arkist, DOK, Dark Sky, Kidkut, Unknown, Objekt, Outboxx, Ryo Murakami, Kowton, Mark Ernestus Meets BBC, Levon Vincent, James Blake, Hype Williams.
Machinedrum - Room(s)
Thundercat - Golden Age of Apocalypse
and Zomby - Dedication
If they weren't out this month then they're still my highlight for the month.
As for songs, it's been relatively quiet on the releases. Next month's going to be killer though...
Dark Sky - Neon
unknown - Fuck Yonkers
Mark Ernestus - Meets BBC
Radiohead - give up the ghost(thriller Houseghost remix)
Radiohead - Separator (Four Tet remix)
Lone - all those weird things
Bjork - Crystalline (Omar Souleyman version)
Damu - Beat of Zen
and proper highlight
was Blawan down at Life. Properly rinsed the speakers with one of the best pounding sets I've ever heard.
^this
to the Dark Sky EP. top, top quality
Hackman's 'Close' EP/three-track single was tight also
yeah
it was nice to get an EP that was built for dancing over muso-points. Neon doesn't break ground or anything but that bassline is more fun than almost anything else that came out this year.
Think these are all this month
The Haxan Cloak - s/t (Aurora Borealis CD/LP)
Charlatan - Triangles (Digitalis LP)
Robedoor - To Down to Die (Not Not Fun LP)
Inga Copeland - s/t EP (Self Released 12')
Dub War - The Funky Deal/To The Depths (Tempa 12')
Joy O - Sicko Cell/Knock Knonk (Swamp81 12')
Klaus - Tusk EP (R&S 12')
Go Hiyama - Monad VII (Stroboscopic Artefacts 12')
James Blake - Order/Pan (Hemlock 12')
Dam Mantle - We EP (Get Me! 12')
Regis - In a Syrian Tongue (Blackest Ever Black 12')
The Two. Fifteens - The Commute Vol. 1 (Self Released download)
Dj Diamond - Flight Muzik (Planet Mu LP)
LP of the month has to either be
Zomby - Dedication (4AD LP)
Sun Araw - Ancient Romans (Sun Ark LP)
But my purchase of the month is undoubtedly the Ben UFO/Kassem Mosse TTT tapes, which I got for a surprisingly reasonable sum considering their limited run. Excellent mixes and hearing Harmonimix - Trim on my stereo is ace.
Song of the month is Lukid - Spitting Bile
I want to call it a tune, but thats a bit too nice, it's a murky, distorted beast of a track! Probably his best yet.
Gig of the month - Drugstore at St Giles church
Anna Calvi at Field Day was great too.
Albums and Singles
Drugstore - Anatomy
Wooden Shjips - West
Inga Copeland - s/t 12"
Aerial Jungle - Tales of Acoustic Levitation (maybe last month?)
Elm - Nemcatacoa (2011 remastered)
Maria Minerva - Cabaret Cixous
Cymbals Eat Guitars
really impressed at how they've managed to follow up Why There Are Mountains; wrote some garb about it over in the reviews: http://drownedinsound.com/releases/16448/reviews/4143387
Not sure what else I've listened to and been impressed by that came out this month ... The Blackout by Tunnels springs to mind but not a lot else
how does this August compare with last August?
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4265530
some of that, plus
my favorite: Joe Goddard - Gabriel EP
and
Pixelord - Iron and Cream EP
Pacific Blue - Industry Prt1+2
Myrryrs - Feel U EP
Fall On Your Sword - The First Time I Saw Jupiter
Beastie Respond - Syncopy EP
my favourite: Tasseomancy - Ulalume (sounds like joanna newsom but darker with creepy sounds)
also like balam acab's and mister heavenly's
http://soundcloud.com/exclaim/sets/tasseomancy-ulalume/s-4BylW
Slave Ambient - album of the year
It'll take something massive to change my mind on this
