My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky
Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters. Very dark and very dramatic.
Slint - Spiderland
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Would go for Scenes From the Second Storey though for God Machine. I think that's darker and more epic (personally)
...for God Machine.
...the lead singer went on to form Sophia who are also worth checking out.
Saw em live years and years ago, good band.
...People Are Like Seasons; very melancholic album with one bizarro upbeat holiday-themed number on it :)
very good indeed
It's a nightmare trying to find any God Machine stuff..
For under a tenner on amazon. Today. I've just checked.
Spent ages in the 90s looking for it on CD to no avail..
Ordered both of them, cheers.
Whatever people might say about the internet and real music shops, you can't beat amazon for finding stuff at a reasonable price.
Duels - The Barbarians Move In (massively overlooked)
But otherwise I found their stuff quite warm and fuzzy.
Fantastic and epic twisty dischordant music, great band
I think I prefer "Now You Are One Of Us" though.
although for me Hide the Kitchen Knives feels particularly dramatic. Congletons production is absolutely crushing, combining the low piano and horn stabs with the bass throughout makes it sound so theatrical.
Tilt / The Drift
If you haven't already.
is The Haxan Cloak - s/t.
also his Fact Mix: http://www.factmag.com/2011/08/12/fact-mix-273-the-haxan-cloak/
oh and maybe also the Deaf Center album from earlier this year
Third - Portishead
Like the soundtrack to a film noir set in hell
'Heaven Up Here' by Echo and The Bunnymen
'Saturnalia' by The Gutter Twins
The second Tindersticks album.
but mainly Floodland by The Sisters Of Mercy.
a silver mt zion - He Has Left Us Alone but Shafts of Light Sometimes Grace the Corners of Our Rooms
Hoover - The Lurid Traversal of Route 7
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Sunn 0)))/Boris collab Altar - finds Sunn at their most accessable and for two drone bands has quite a lot of variety going on.
Second the Swans, Slint, GYBE! suggestions, the
but it is damn good an underappreciated.
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
The Haxan Cloak record is great
Obviously Scott Walker Tilt/The Drift
Bohren and der Club of gore Black Earth
Is surely the correct answer to this thread.
don't touch it - it's got hippy on it... :-)
but Goth/Hippy/New Age...Im sure DCD could sit in a little of each Venn diagram-wise. Either way it's all pseudo-spiritual twaddle to me...but it is possible I am wrong as even tiny dosages of DCD has sent me running so I haven't exactly ventured through the whole back catalogue...so file under 'throwaway comment on internet forum'.
...The Psychic Paramount might press your buttons. Dunno.
solo debut from half of Have a Nice Life
Ambient, yet claustrophobic electronica with short stabs of horror movie strings. Unbelievably atmospheric.
the latest This Will Destroy You record.
Courtesy & Goodwill Towards Men ORRR
A Small Turn Of Human Kindness
but for future reference: Jacaszek - Treny
i guess slightly different from the rest of the music in this thread.....but i genuinely think it's great
6/7 different flavours of dark and dramatic — take your pick.
But where to start? Even with downward spiral and broken I'd probably go with the slip.
Not that much separating them, bar The Fragile, which I don't rate very highly at all.
...I played some to my missus recently to make up for making her listen to Odd Future. Seemed to get me out of that hole.
Scheming on a blow job from a crack head.
He was like "yo, wanna piece little man?"
I was "No, I'm better off with my hand!"
/may not even be Gravediggaz now I think about it.
DANGER! DANGER! ENTER THE GRAVEYARD CHAMBER!
The third album is the one to get for absolute grimmnity. Not fun to listen to though.
Can't believe nobody has mentioned this. It's oppressive as well!
Sisters Of Mercy - First & Last & Always or Floodland
Tool - Lateralus
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
The Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Tenebrous Liar - Last Stand
VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theatre
White Hills - White Hills
Absence = badass.
