Its high time I started listening to them but they have done lots! So um. Help and stuff.
might as well absorb their best work first. then i'd get hip to:
experimental jet set is wildly underrated, IMO
personally I think it would be most pleasurable to go through their work chronologically - that's more or less what I did and loved the journey (although it took me a little over three years to really soak it all in...). Their most accessible albums are probably rather ripped or murray street. I would avoid goo or dirty - contrary to what a lot of people think I find those albums sort of "difficult" and not anywhere near as great as their 80's stuff. There are a few gems on those LPs though. EVOL would be a good one to start with. Its more moody than DDN but has some unbeatable cuts. have fun. I just saw the youth two nights ago - it was glorious as always. their set leaned heavily on bad moon rising which was a nice suprise
I think I've only seen them do Death Valley 69 off Bad Moon Rising.
I think it was one of their only shows this year. They opened with brave men run and did dv69 second (which is usually in the encore). it was incredible. they also did ghost bitch, i love her all the time, flower and cotton crown, tom violence, inhuman, kill yr idols, and eric's trip (only song of ddn - nice to see after them playing it to death the last four years or so). They also did starfield road, sugar kane, drunken butterfly, psychic hearts (the moore solo cut) and a handful of eternals. sorry if that was too exhausting
that sounds amazing
SISTER is the easiest route in. followed by DAYDREAM NATION, RATHER RIPPED, GOO, MURRAY ST & EVOL.
and one of their most accessible. I guess Daydream is the standard one though.
Dirty was my route in, and is still my favourite.
I heard Goo first, and then Daydream Nation. That worked for me.
but I listened to Goo a few times and really really like it. Haven't returned to Daydream Nation yet, probably should.
is reissued soon. Maybe try that.
It is amazing.
Day dream nation has some great tracks but on the whole is quite dull
I only this'd this because it is SO OFF MARK. listen again my friend
Remember when they did the roundhouse dont look back shows, the consensus was they were really underwhelming (even more than most dont look backs) the reason being its a tedious album
Those shows got rave reviews, and rightly so.
probably got rave reviews in recognition of its seminal status, I definitely remember the consensus on dis was they were really boring shows, I even remember posting 'thats because its actually a boring album' in the thread, i'll try find it
I started with Daydream Nation but it took me ages before I realised I loved it, and I think Sister is a bit more immediate. You've also got keys into the arty earlier stuff and the catchier later stuff from there.
And say Daydream Nation. Whenever I even see the word "Sonic" that entire record comes to mind. As far as I'm concerned, they're never going to make a record that perfect. It's one where there's absolutely no feeling of filler, even when it gets all wanky and noisy. Even "Providence" feels completely deliberate and necessary, and that's just a voice mail over some droning sounds.
Also, I thought The Eternal was really accessible and smooth, even if it was very tame for a SY record. If you want a mellow-flavored entry point, that's a nice spot. Otherwise just start at Daydream Nation.
Evol has the best atmosphere, Bad Moon Rising has the best drones and Murray Street has the best jams
Washing Machine, mainly because it was the first album I got by them. It's quite an amazing piece of work go find out for yourself, seriously when that record clicks it really clicks!
Everyone i've spoken to has got into them through a different album, and everyone has a different favourite. Just look above, everyone is saying different things.
I don't really think they have a definitive album. I got into them through Washing Machine, not the most accessible, but it is still my favourite album ever. Sonic Youth is all about the journey, just get whatever and be immersed in it!
Diamond Sea was the first SY track i heard and it blew me away. That whole album is a killer.
Id say my favs are:
A Thousand Leaves
by a long stretch
can't go wrong with their take on get into the groove...
I need to know for a friend.
Anyway, my answer is to listen to the first half of 'Sonic Nurse' quite a lot and then take it from there.
I'd also recommend Sonic Nurse and The Eternal for a beginner, Daydream Nation less so although it is their best album.
But I must say I have a real soft spot for Rather Ripped. Possibly their most tuneful album, and there's an effortless brilliance to the songwriting.
only album of theirs I've currently got, and it feels like it sums up everything they're meant to be about quite well. Incinerate gets catchier every time I hear it too
for poppier stuff: Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped
for more interesting stuff: sister then evol
then Daydream nation
don't bother with the rest
that whole "don't bother with the rest" is not something I agree with at all. Thousand Leaves is one of my favorite albums and the SYR series is full of gems if you are into noise. confusion is sex and bad moon rising are no wave/art rock classics. every album has its owen merits.
Two of their best albums right there.
everyone needs to get over it.
Murray Street is good and though has a couple of crackers isn't essential.
or Sonic Nurse (I' was pretty sure it was just called Nurse though..).
I found it the best in terms of production/mood/songs... I never really clicked with much else, A Thousand Leaves has some great bits and the first half of Murray St is cracking, but yeah, Nurse is the one I got obsessed with for quite some time.
yet it seems to consistently left out of most of these discussions, so many brilliant tracks and 'Peace Attack' is possibly one of the best closing tracks they've ever written.
Is underrated. Bit short though. I'd go for Daydream Nation, Sister and Evol.
that's not short at all.
Then Evol or Sister.
