The Microphones

kilgore-trout [Edit] [Delete] 3 replies 15:47, 23 July '11

Somehow I've never heard of them up until now but I just listened to The Glow Pt. 2 and it's fucking amazing. Is his Mount Eerie stuff a similar kind of thing or should I get another Microphones album next? And can anyone recommend any similar sounding bands I might not know about? Cheers

  • The Microphones are one of the very best bands.

Dunno what it is about Mount Eerie but nothing he's released under that name has even come close for me. Well, except for maybe Lost Wisdom which is beautifully quiet and sad.

But next album? I'd probably go with It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water. And as for similar bands, check out their last.fm, probably the most accurate similar artists on the whole site.

  • Get It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water as said

and Mount Eerie (the last album he did under The Microphones name). I haven't heard much Mount Eeries stuff, Wind's Poem is good but somewhat different to The Microphones.

  • mount eerie are pretty different

less tuneful, more about atmosphere and textures, wooden block percssion and sparse guitars

My favourite of his is actually the transitional album live in japan, but the microphones' 'mount eerie' is probably the one to get after the glow part 2.

Similar related/bands, adrian orange/thanksgiving is really good (though probably more mount eerie sounding), little wings, his wife's band woelv/o paon
