so let's list them
Reuben - Agony/Agatha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62TNSd-fupw
but its good
but except it's good
That Bedingfield atrocity.
is a good 'un
There’s no way to tell and who cares, well I don’t
Thank the lord that my standards for success are so low'
Trying hard to tell us what she means with dead poets and drum machines....
I broke my promise/Not to write another song about you
except it doesn't suck; it's fucking immense!
fuck off with that, i mean really fuck right off. like you're the first person to ever do that, and that you even have the charm and modesty to really pull such a self centered gesture off.
how many times I've thought about writing about the paper I'm writing on?'
is pretty good. But generally I agree - Nick Cave has started doing this in recent years (We Call Upon the Author, There She Goes My Beautiful World etc) and it's fucking annoying.
your argument is invalid.
I'm so full of self-indulgence to think that you'd like this song.
I wrote a song for yooooou
YES OBVIOUSLY I'M LISTENING TO IT
I think CrispinAlexander hit the nail on the head - it's the false modesty and self-centredness that makes it unpalatable. Like it's all about the subject of the song on the face of it, but it's really about the writer and how great they are for writing a whole song by themselves.
One of the best tracks on Velocifero: 'I wrote a protest song about you'. But I think that's okay, because the protest song isn't actually Burning Up - she's singing about another song that nobody else was meant to hear.
Sort of like how Tribute by Tenacious D wasn't about itself, but the unheard Greatest Song instead.
Maybe it's only truly terrible when the song is about itself. That's the real vortex of self-reference.
hadn't heard that in years. "Thanks".
actually about Brian Wilson but the songwriting 'anguish' is there:
remember all the bad dreams
are not far from reality
would you write again for me?
and who bade you stop
this living art
have you forgot
just what you are?
if you don't want to then
you could at least pretend
that the paper's your soul and your blood's in the pen
and maybe then you'd see the light
and read the truth you had to write
However this is a phenomenal song, one of the best of 2011 (for me, at least).
It's probably not even about songwriting, but many suggest it's an 'opening' and introduction to the band, the things Blumberg will and won't do ("panoramic view / that's one thing i won't do"), and the reference to its 90's alt-rock influence ("strip it down, then build it up again").
Your life is a song...but not this one
does that count?
i was just quoting jeffrey lewis
People tell me
"Ben, just make up junk
And turn it in"
But I never was alright with turning in
A bunch of shit
I don't like wasting time
On music that won't make me proud
But now I've found a reason
To sit right down and shit some out
It's strange that cinema about cinema is generally, at least a cursory thought tells me, better than music about music. Although Lady Jane/John Coltrane by Gil Scott Heron is awesome, i think it works better when it's not rock.
...at least it seems to as far as I can tell, with lines like "Sounds in my head that might never come out".
