Bumsnogger
James Blunt
I'm pretty sure this is the only reply you'll get
Good.
Seriously, I don't get it.
What's to get? You don't like them. I wouldn't lose any sleep about it
A bunch of people saying that they do like these bands wont solve your problem, will it now?
I find it bemusing.
What do people see in them?
it'll get billions
never heard of them
it's obvious why people like these bands:
Belle & Sebastian
Fiery Furnaces
Mercury Rev
cos they're great.
love that whole list
They make sounds that people find pleasant.
That's about it, really. Why make it more complex than that? They write songs, people enjoy listening to them. If you don't, right on, go listen to something you do.
But said people
often also like other stuff which is much better and not very similar. Pourquoi?
Cause they like the music.
Seriously, it's this simple.
Is it an age thing?
Quite a lot of these are late 90s/early 00s so I spent my mid to late teens growing up on some of them.
The indie backlash is in full force, isnt it?
I'm not that excited about the genre anymore either, but instead of listing a bunch of bands you don't like, maybe try using that energy to list some music we should be listening to instead?
idk, do what you want, just tired of these "bands you h8" threads every week.
"Indie backlash"?
Nice bit of generalising champ. Really stretching those brain cells right there.
Nah, all of those bands have always been rubbish. Funny really, they're not names that spring to mind when I think of indie. They're mostly some sort of dreadful americana sub-genre.
Sorry pal, dont know who you are.
Like your work.
smith, mercury rev and neutral milk hotel are spot on. the rest I find a bit stodgy. and ash are so vanilla. otherwise i agree - lets get positive.
The Horrors
Just a more indie version of Coldplay.
I don't like most of these bands
but lay off Magnetic Fields yeah?
I like bands.
Who is MoscowNights?
*ho is MoscowNights?
I really like about half that list
Can you tell me these bands that are similar but much better so I can listen to them plz?
Oh wait
You said *not* similar. That doesn't even make sense. I'm out.
It makes perfect sense.
15 bands you've listed there
if you'd listed a smaller number, let's say 3, maybe this wouldn't be a useless thread.
you've not really made any kind of point, it's just a list of bands you don't like.
and therefore this thread seems to be quite literally saying
you don't like all the bands that other people do like. and you seemingly can't understand that.
you don't like songwritery bands
big deal. i don't like pompous 'experimental' bands with nothing to say, however unlike you i dont really expect anyone to care.
No, please, do go on
Waaaaah people don't like the same bands as me!
remember when you said i was arrogant and obnoxious
lols
Irrelevant in relation to what
Existence.
MEH
meh
yes, complete shite

you're mental

Surely these bands are just bland and irrelevant/disgustingly twee/really irritating/plain rubbish? Right?
Bit disappointing that only one person has responded properly.
Is anyone here interested in music and willing to engage with the original question?
There is a debate to be had here but everyone's initial response appears to be: 'Oh noes! Someone I don't know on da internetz doesn't like loadz of my fave bands!!! :(((('
I'd just be interested to know if you feel the same way about any other bands that you just don't 'get', who lots of people seem to adore.
Maybe this will help you understand:
I & lots of others really like Animal Collective. Some of you don't. How do you feel about it? Do you want to like them? Do you understand why others like them?
Don't really mind.
Not really.
Yes.
i don't think anyone else is really that baffled by others
liking different bands to them
LOL
No-one has responded properly - the poster above is taking the piss. Not that he needs to take it, seeing as how you're pretty much giving it away.
the reason nobody's responded properly is that you haven't set out any criteria for a decent debate
All you've done, effectively, is said "I don't like these bands. Doen anybody else not like them?"
You might as well have gone:
Aston Villa
Manchester City
Newcastle United
Everton
Chelsea
Accrington Stanley
Bolton Wanderers
Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur
Burnley
Surely these teams are just irrelevant/disgustingly managed by Scotsman/really rich/don't play sexy football? Right?
Despite the obvious (whiteness, guitars), there's very little to connect the vast list of bands you laid out and collectively damned. If you'd narrowed your focus to "twee" and cited Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Tilly & The Wall etc... you might have been onto something, even though the twee argument has been done a million times.
So, you haven't given anybody anything to latch onto, to get their teeth into.
Sorry, but it's just a crap thread. Try harder.
I preferred all of their early stuff
arsequake
to the OP - those are mostly brilliant bands.
They are all fairly similar (in a very broad sense) so maybe you just don't like that sort of music.
Your getting annoyed that people aren't entering a debate but you haven't started one. You just said that they are ''bland and irrelevant/disgustingly twee/really irritating/plain rubbish?'' which is obviously not the case, you just don't like them and I'm guessing any of that kind of indie/pop/folk/rock bands. There is a difference.
With regards to bands I don't like that are very popular here: things like animal collective, wild beasts, dirty projectors, tame implala all that psycadelic/chillwave stuff (that what it's called?) But that doesn't mean I think they're rubbish and I can't understand why people like them.
Your mistake was listing a bunch of excellent/acclaimed bands. If you'd listed some stuff entirly without merit and asked why people liked tham you'd have got a different response.
tl,dr
Or the shorter version
you've come across as a massive troll and people are responding accordingly.
I like every single band in the OP.
I have to say though
Death Cab are fucking balls.
no you
fiery furnaces are one of the most irritating live acts i've witnessed.
i think age/musical period in time comes in to it...
Mercury Rev - i was listening to chasing yerself is steam and lego my ego back in the early 90's - at that time those albums were breaking new ground bringing in an indie rambshakle slightly trippy aesthetic that even pre dates pavement, 'chasing a bee' will always remain one of my favourite tracks of my teenage days.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztKNzjgshfY
deserters songs also broke new ground and brought the band a much wider audience, cant say i've listened to anything of theirs since then, perhaps because they ventured from the ramshackle youthful vibe and it became to poppy and no longer broke new ground, or beacuse they matured i either still havent or have matured in a different way.
the same feelings can be applied to Deathcab and Weezer, i started listening to deathcab when we have the facts... came out, and they were taking the pavement vibe of there first album and adding electronic elements in a different way to much of the other guitar music of the period and they could hold a slow beat, again i loved photo album and transatlanticism but from then on i've felt that there music became a little more bland/twee and i havent listened to the last 3 as much but that doesnt mean they are not a solid band
weezer blue was massive back in 94, it came out of nowhere and took elements from everywhere and made them there own, pinkerton wasn't bad either.
tl:dnr - i bored myself
I liked the few of Magnetic Fields songs
plus he seems like a cool guy, so yeah....
the rest I don't get either. I don't think there is any rational explanation
